Community Service in High School Two students have the same GPA, ACT score, SAT scores, and both of them have a good history. The difference is that one student did 20 hours of community service whereas the other student did not. Universities and colleges will be more interested in the student that did community service. High schools should require their students to do hours of community service to not only look better on college applications but to help students explore career opportunities and build good habits. High schools should require community service because it looks good on college and university applications. Carlos Cano, an Admissions Counselor at William Paterson University, says that community service shows that you can “maintain a healthy balance between all of the different activities you participate in” (Cano). That is an important skill in college because you have to juggle with class hours, homework/assignments, and perhaps fraternity or sorority events. Carlos Cano also states in his article that “volunteering shows you’re engaged in your community” (Cano). Diane Loupe states that community service can also help students “gain work skills” (Loupe). This means that students aren’t just updating their resume or college application when they volunteer, they are learning about what they might want to be after college and getting experience on the subject. Therefore, high schools need to require their students to do community service so that by the time they are enrolling for college, they know what types of classes they need to take in order to do their desired career.
