Should schools make community service mandatory?
Should student service learning hours be mandatory for high school graduation by Claire Koenig is article that it's saying that people to graduate from that school have to do community service to be a highschool graduate. Schools shouldn't make community service mandatory for the students at school. Students should have the right to do it or not. It's not fair for the students by having mandatory community service many students will able to spend free time on their free time many students will be having lack of focus many students aren't necessary on doing community service it won't really help them students should not graduate just because they are doing community
service they should be focusing on their classes to graduate Some high school students already have some other things to do from there other classes. Mostly of the students focus on school more than the community learning service hours. All of the students some don't even care about community service and some won't be interested to be in it they should mostly they focus on is school and it should not be fair for the students just to pick up trash they won't be doing good in school because they might not have time for their classes. Community service takes away time for people that have to do things like homework classwork or studying for their classes. people should not be forced to do community service it might waste their time because some students might be busy on school. Peolple will have less time on doing something they want to do
Imagine a typical teen, they have a job, homework, sports, and other extracurriculars. They don’t get home till late at night and they are exhausted. This teen can take much more and thankfully they are about to graduate, but wait the school wants them to fit in one hundred of community service into that schedule in order to graduate. How on earth is this busey teen suppose to do that with all that they have going on? Students should not have to do one hundred hours of community service to graduate high school.
This school should not require 100 hours of community service as a graduation requirement because of the busy lives of teenagers, the pressure of graduation, and loss of enthusiasm for community service. Schools should encourage community service but this is not the way to do it.
If students want to learn more about their field, they should feel inclined to actually do the work on their own. Also, if a school makes each student complete at least 24 hours of community service to graduate, every student in the school will graduate with the exact same amount, which means hundreds of students are going to the workforce with no advantage over the other.
There has been a recent "surge" of education mandates being passed. These new mandates have had a major effect on the productivity of public schools and have forced some schools to change their methods in terms of how and what they teach.
Compulsory education laws define America’s adolescent people today. Without these laws many people wouldn’t get the education they need in life or for their future. Compulsory education helps people develop or expand many skills that they will need in life, such as social and thinking skills. By abolishing compulsory education laws in the United States people wouldn’t develop such skills or be prepared for life ahead of them. By removing this you would have a generation full of young people who wouldn’t know how to think.
Within recent decades, college has become a more easily available path than it has been for the past generations. In a current news release, The Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that, “Of the 2.9 million youth age 16 to 24 who graduated from high school between January and October 2014, about 68.4 percent were enrolled in college in October” (BLS Economic News Release from April 2015). When a student graduates high school, most of them intend to continue on to college. They have the idea that, while there, they can break away from all the general classes and just focus on what they want to learn. However, for almost all students, they find that this is not the reality. Just like high school, they find that they have to take approximately two years in general studies in order to attend and graduate with the major of their choice. General education classes should not be required because a majority of the information learned has already been covered in past years. Most of the courses do not benefit a student 's major, and the total amount of required hours for these classes can become a big waste of time and money.
General education requirements should be mandatory for all college students. The general education classes offered at colleges help create well-rounded students with knowledge in areas other than just their intended major. General education courses can also help undecided students pick an area of interest to study. They could also give students who have already chosen a major a reason to change to something else that might seem more interesting to them after taking the required course. Another benefit of taking these required courses is even though some students might have taken a version of the course in high school, they might have another opportunity to learn the material again if it wasn’t clear to them the first time. Sometimes a change in the classroom setting and a new professor could help a student who struggled with the subject material.

In an article written by Linda Saslow titled High School Mandating Community Service for Graduation, she mentions the many pros to mandatory community service. Saslow mentions school districts like Roslyn and Hewlett-Woodmere (1994, para 3) that have started requiring high school students to complete a certain number of community service hours in order to graduate high school. Their goal is to give “kids the opportunity for new experiences” (Saslow, 1994, para 4). Through research conducted by the school districts, they have come to the conclusion that students who would’ve been “too shy to volunteer have admitted that they were glad they had been forced”. Over the past decades our culture has changes dramatically. To which our nation was once a physically active nation. Yet now it seems that society discourages physical activity. The human race has been dependent on automobiles, discouraging people to walk or bike, increasing the chance of a poor life-style. Yet there are many factors that affect the achievement and maintenance of a healthy life. Young people are growing into a diverse society, which is characterized by rapid change, inactive work and leisure practices that influence unhealthy behaviors. By incorporating physical activity into peoples daily routine will increase their chances of being healthier, reducing certain diseases and learning how to avoid injuries. Physical education helps students improve their knowledge about health issues and practices that will lead to a more enjoyable life. Students playing and working in a team together develop social skills, teamwork, achieving goals, and development of self-esteem. Overall physical education provides the potential for a better life style.
Imagine a world where the majority of the population values morals and treats others with respect. Wouldn’t that be great? A multitude of our daily conflicts would be solved, the world would be a more enjoyable place. Character and morals are a vital part of a student’s life and need to be further valued in schools around the world. Students are faced with many challenges and conflicts on a daily basis and could benefit from the reinforcement of the knowledge of right and wrong and good character.
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” -Pablo Picasso. This quote is pretty straightforward. It says how all children are artists and how they grow older are not an artist anymore. A child’s drawing can tell so much about what they are thinking and feeling about their surroundings. They see things differently from adults and teens because when they are drawing or doing some sort of art they are not told that it is a “bad picture” or what ever they are doing is “not right.” They don’t have a limit upon their thoughts and ideas, but when they grow up, they do. Starting from the first day of school they are taught about the wrong things and the right thing. As we grow older there are more classes that have right and wrong answers to a question like for example math. We learn to follow the steps, use the formula, and get the right answer but because of these classes we forget about the arts. If the arts are forgotten then student’s way of expressing what they feel is taken away. Which brings more pressure to students in classes like math, physics, geography, and etc. That is why schools should make arts classes mandatory because arts classes help students build their artistic and creative skills, makes them better learners, and encourages them to find other ways of expressing their thoughts.
Many students that go to college miss class for many different reasons. Some reasons for missing class are acceptable and should be handled accordingly. Colleges should get on board and create a mandatory attendance policy. Creating this will help avoid many problems in the future for the student. This change will be beneficial for the students and professors.
One of the focal opinions in favor of requiring attendance is that good attendance is needed to develop a strong sense of public in a classroom, and to foster a healthy sense of class involvement. For instructors who choose to stick with the old lecture model, this isn’t an issue. However, many instructors opt to have a participatory classroom filled with discussions and activities. This kind of teaching requires quite a bit more effort, and if it works well, the experience can be very beneficial and rewarding for students. However, students have to show up for this to work and take mutual responsibility to participating in class discussion– and failure to show up and participate
Volunteering: The great experience no one can afford to lose. Opposers say, mandatory community service can have several negative effects on students. “Community service hours are impressive additions to college applications and can provide a student with a great sense of accomplishment; however, the mandatory hours will have many negative consequences” (Cydney Hayes, 2012). Many students are barely even passing the regular school curriculum, and opposers believe that adding the additional load of mandatory service hours will discourage teens from even wanting to graduate. Also mandatory service is usually assigned by a court as punishment to delinquents. “In a small number of cases, community service is required by the court system as restitution for delinquent offenses” (Planty and Bozick, 2006).
