Internal communications and external communications are two different forms of communications that play a role in the workplace and everyday life. Internal communications focuses on communicating with the employees, whereas external communications refers to communicating with the public audience. Although these two forms of communications have their differences, they can contribute to one another in real life and the business world.

Specifically, external communications refers to the interchange of communication, information, and data among a group or business and additional groups, businesses, and people beyond its conventional configuration. The objectives of this form of communications are to enable collaboration among groups made up of dealers, contractors, investors, and stockholders, as well as displaying a flattering and positive appearance of a business or organization as well as its facilities and products to the public and current and possible consumers. First and foremost, everything must start out with a plan. If there is not a plan set in stone, then things could backfire. Even if the organization does not have a plan yet, they can start by brainstorming ideas for a strategic communication plan. According to Holland (2012), if an organization has two distinct and individual plans written out, then they should figure out a way to connect them and add in significant details in regards to how both plans interrelate with each other. As a pharmacist you must be able to effectively communicate with your patients in order to care for them. Communication is considered to be a two way process, which involves at least two people sharing information (Higgs, Sefton, Street, McAlister & Hay, 2005). It can occur through speech or vocalisation (e.g. crying), non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, gestures, eye contact and through written or other material forms such as pictures (O’Toole, 2012). Communication is considered effective when the intended meaning of the conveyed message is received and understood by the both parties and a point of common understanding is reached (O’Toole, 2012). The goal of effective communication between an Occupational Therapist (OT) and a client is to ultimately deliver an intervention that creates positive participation in occupations that in turn leads to an improvement of health and well-being in the client. This goal is best achieved through the application of client-centered practice, which is accomplished by the development of both mutual understanding and a therapeutic relationship (O’Toole, 2012).
