I believe in following your passion. I believe that your passion should be able to express who you are, and guide you. I have many passions which I found throughout my life, and the first one I found was my passion of technology.
This all started when I was in first grade. We were in our first computer class ever at the Smith College Campus School, after Ms. Dassatti (our computer teacher) taught us about all the rules and guidelines on the program we were going to us, which called Paintbrush, components of the program, and the basics on how to operate it. Focusing on pursuing a career you like is important because statistics show fifty-two percent of Americans are unhappy going to work every day because they chose a career they didn’t have an interest in. My ideal job is in the medical field because I’ve always had a passion in helping people. I want to specialize in nurse anesthesia because of the important role they have in society. Nurse anesthesia interests me because of the tasks they do, the advanced education path they must take, and the history behind the profession.
The life I have had so far has taught me a lot about academic and life skills; from when I was about six to the age I am now. I am always learning and happy to learn new things. I might not know what I want right now, but I do know that I want something for my life; I want to go to college, so I could make the future I see happen. As you 're reading this you 're probably asking yourself why? Why does going and graduating college mean so much to her? What makes her different from all the others? Well, to answer all those questions you would have to continue reading as I explain some of the moments in my life, in which they brought me to the conclusion that I have to go to college.
In “Do What You Love? #@&** That!” by Jeff Haden, he explains how telling people to do what they love in their career is advice that is disastrous. Haden tells his readers that “That advice has probably resulted in more failed businesses than all the recessions combined…because that’s not how the vast majority of people end up owning successful businesses” (qtd. in Haden 463). Haden also mentions that to feel a real sense of passion you have to produce something important, gain respect for it, and feel control over your life (Haden 463). Not everyone agrees to mix passion and their business life together since some people think it’s two completely different things, but somehow someone’s work life becomes a passion without them realizing it has or without them even trying to make their work life a passion. Haden points out that “Passion is not something you follow. Passion is something that will follow you as you put in the hard work to become valuable to the world” (qtd. Haden 463). Even though not everyone chooses to follow their passion, in some way someone ends up doing something they enjoy and later on possibly love. But it was not until I read the lines of perplexity and distress on an Alzheimer’s patient’s brow as he grasped for the name of his year-old grandchild, that I was shook with the realization that I had been taking even the smallest of my memories and experiences for granted. I was born and raised in a family of educators. I am the youngest in my nuclear family. My father is an Industrial Engineer and my mother is a 4th grade Reading and Language Arts teacher. I have one older brother and one older sister. However, I am the only one of my parent’s children who has a child of their own.

Carl McCoy who wrote Dear Grads: Don’t Do What you Love similarly stated that doing what you love will not completely fulfill one’s desire to succeed in a career (466). He builds upon this statement in his essay by explaining that “purpose or vocation,” is needed in order to create a successful career. Miya Tokumitsu builds upon the overall statement of following one’s passion and includes that following the mantra of “Do What You Love” will “devalue one’s work and dehumanize the laborers” (468). Following one’s passion, love, and self-fulfillment can lead to failure in a career, under the wrong circumstances. As a student, go into class with an open mind and be aware of potential career opportunities for oneself, possible lucrative careers are everywhere; one’s passion will tell him where to go.
Passion for Family, Community, Business, Technology and Intellectual growth are what motivate me on the daily basis. These are vital parts that have contributed to framing me into the person I’ve become. They have also shaped my short-term and long-term goals in life. It’s critical for one to have a vision for their life and what they anticipate to accomplish. Without a vision or desire there is no hope for one to continue and to purse anything. My experiences with in my passions have helped me aligned my vision for my life. They have given me the valuable knowledge that have set me up for success to get to this point in life.
