Introduction
Coaching classroom teachers to create self-regulated learners using evidence-based practice in a classroom setting is a gratifying experience. As a K-12 Literacy Specialist, I aim to develop teachers’ understanding of the literacy process system, a cognitive approach to literacy, implementation of a balanced literacy curriculum, and their ability to create and teach lessons that engage students and promote the transfer of learning. The same tactics I use as a K-12 Literacy Specialist with classroom teachers, I will, in turn, used it with pre-service teachers.

The activity will enable students to begin to create their philosophy of teaching. In conjunction, I will develop scenarios and meaningful experiences related to the various theorist. I may have them to participate in activities just as they might do with their students. These activities provide them with the opportunity to experience the different aspects teaching as learners themselves before engaging their students in the process. I also have them to critically examine and share their ideas about different representations of practice, including examples of literacy lesson plans according to State Standards with the integration of technology, examples of assessments and accompanying student work, video recordings of lesson enactments. These representations of practice make particularly visible aspects of teaching, such as learning goals, depth of knowledge, essential questions, assessment, and equity. For this assignment, I completed a survey to assess my school’s literacy program by using a survey that was adapted from by Patty, Maschoff, & Ransom (1996) to analyze the instructional program and the school’s infrastructure. To be able to answer my survey, I needed to go colleagues of mine in the English Department and to my administration to help with these questions. Being a math teacher, we hardly ever discuss the literacy and the students’ acquisition of it in our department meeting during staff development days. Since I am not truly current with literacy acquisition in education, I am hoping to understand more from this process so I can help all my students. I want them to be able to read texts related to math and find information that will be useful to them during the year.
In social work evidence based practice is considered to be a decision making process and practitioners rely on the evidence when working with clients. According to Aveyard and Sharp (2013), evidence based practice is not easy to put into practice and there are many barriers to evidence based practice such as lack of time, lack of awareness of research, lack of support and cooperation, and lack of authority and inadequate facilities (p. 145). Throughout my education I’ve come to realize that best practice indicates the need to incorporate stories, plays, poetry, dictionaries, newspapers, textbooks, informational books, and the rest to allow each learner the opportunity to engage in the exploration of in range of texts. I also must provide time for the student to respond to, reflect upon, and discuss what they are reading and writing. One of my strongly held beliefs is that the best learning experiences occur when the student takes ownership of the learning. I truly believe that students need to be included in setting individual goals, making decisions about independent reading choices, and selection of activities to demonstrate learning.
In the article “Using Evidence-Based Practice to Reduce Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections”, by AJN, the author states how catheters are causing urinary tract infections among adult patients in healthcare facilities. The purpose of healthcare workers reading the article, “Using Evidence-Based Practice to Reduce Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections”, is to provide better care to their patients with a Foley catheter and to try and prevent a urinary tract infection associated with a Foley catheter. This article affects the nursing process by presenting it with further education, and affects the patients by giving them a better catheter experience.
Evidence based practice is instilled in many nursing students these days on how patient care should be practiced. For some reason, once school is over, many nurses do not go on to further their learning. They lose the passion to research and take nursing as a job with a paycheck. Maintaining competencies can become a challenge for those who are not passionate about learning and learning new ways of practicing can be a struggle beause they do not care.
There have been two different views on whether or not evidence-based practices are sufficient for educating students with autism. Those who say yes, that evidence based practices are sufficient agree with this because the parents see progress and success in certain task (Kirk, Gallagher, & Coleman, 2015). “Basic life lessons have to become part of the special education curriculum for children with autism-some of whom can learn them only through direct teaching,” and one sufficient evidence-based practice is structured teaching (Kirk, Gallagher, & Coleman, 2015, p. 155). This is where the teacher creates a schedule for the student with autism to follow throughout the day. After the student completes one task on the list they can check it off.
Nursing is constantly changing. Florence Nightingale was the beginning of what nursing is today. Way back then she used research and evidenced-based practice as the guide for nursing. She believed that the conditions of the hospitals or areas that the injured were kept had grave impacts on the infection rates that were infecting the injured soldiers. Florence Nightingale used her skills of mathematics to keep statistical data on the infection rates before and after having sanitized wards (Shetty, 2016). To achieve better patient care and patient outcomes nurses need to obtain new knowledge and use this new knowledge to help their patients. Research and evidenced-based practice are ways for nurses to improve their knowledge of the nursing practice.
The interview artifact attacehd to this standard shows I understand literacy knowledge can be explained and changed over time, icluding practices and strategies. The interview I completed exhibits my ability to communicate with other professionals about the historical underpinnings of literacy instruction and that research is always being conducted to update instructional strategies to better the way literacy is instructed. My membership to ILA shows I understand the importance of the role professional judgemnt and learning theories play in education. Literacy is an on-going skill that teachers and students alike should commonly study and practice in all grades. Problems faced by teachers, especially teachers in higher grades, are not having the skills to be effective teachers of literacy. To effectively teach literacy across content areas, a teacher would need skills such as knowledge of the reading process and the ability to cultivate the knowledge gained in order to make informed decisions within their classrooms (Clary, Oglan, Styslinger,

A teacher also uses ones professional study to formulate beliefs. This practice helps a teacher expand on his or her knowledge when teaching literacy. Even though teachers all share the same common goal when it comes to teaching literacy, it is the teacher’s beliefs in literacy learning that influence instructional decisions and practices. Teachers may use different methods of teaching literacy to different students within ones classroom based on the needs of his or her students. When teaching literacy through ones beliefs, a teacher finds ways to explore reading and writing in the classroom. This allows students to feel comfortable to grow as independent readers and writers. Teachers who engage in professional study may rely on a literacy coach. “Using their expertise in reading and learning to read, literacy coaches provide professional development opportunities and resources” (Vacca et al., 2012). Together with the teacher and classmates, students are given the opportunity to speculate and question the world around them and the world awaiting them. Within small peer groups, for instance, students are encouraged to discuss, share, and compromise. The teacher is there to encourage this process, rather than to provide prescribed solutions. Similarly, the learning environment is collaborative and democratic, giving opportunities for all to speak their minds and receive feedback from peers as well as the teacher. This continuous loop of feedback, potentially positive or negative, serves as the means of assessment for problem-solving based instruction.
Despite the provided material, student collaboration is limited to discussion boards. Obviously, this collaboration does not deepen before the surface. However, they provided for a variety of sources to aid in the understanding of the course material. Similarly, discussion boards allow students to weigh in on a topic throughout a provided period. While in class, only a few have the opportunity to provide commentary due to scheduled class
In this course I experienced an important change in my beliefs about teaching; I came to understand that there are many different theories and methods that can be tailored to suit the teacher and the needs of the student. The readings, especially those from Lyons, G., Ford, M., & Arthur-Kelly, M. (2011), Groundwater-Smith, S., Ewing, R., & Le Cornu, R. (2007), and Whitton, D., Barker, K., Nosworthy, M., Sinclair, C., Nanlohy, P. (2010), have helped me to understand this in particular. In composing my essay about teaching methods and other themes, my learning was solidified, my knowledge deepened by my research and my writing skills honed.
