Definition
Classroom management means the process of ensuring that classroom lessons run smoothly despite disruptive behaviour showed by learners. The term also implies the prevention of disruptive behaviour and closely linked to issues of motivation, discipline and respect. The terms ‘classroom management’ and ‘discipline’ are often used interchangeably. Classroom management means teachers’ strategies to create and maintain an orderly learning environment and discipline means teachers’ responses to learners’ misbehaviour.

The best is the authoritative teacher. Assuming this type of classroom management style will help the teacher find a balance between placing limits and control on the learners while simultaneously encouraging independence. Which also entails explaining the reasons behind the rules and decisions. If a learner is disruptive, the authoritative teacher will be able to offer a polite, but firm, reprimand. It also allows the teacher to mete out discipline, through careful consideration of the circumstances. The authoritative teacher is open to considerable verbal interaction, including critical debates. This will encourage learners to be thinkers,doers while still maintaining effective monitoring.

Strategies

As Fred Jones, a noted classroom management expert, explains: “A good classroom seating arrangement is the cheapest form of classroom management. It’s discipline for free.”
Many experienced teachers recommend assigned seating for learners to facilitate discipline and instruction. They argue that learners left to their own devices will always choose a seat that places the teacher at the greatest disadvantage. Thus, it is important to decide who will sit where and during which activity, based on the teacher’s knowledge of his/her learners.
