In this case study, Steve did several things wrong as a manager. First, Steve reported to work over thirty minutes late. Although Steve stayed late the night before to finish up some work, he is still responsible for showing up to work on time. He should have called into work to inform his supervisor that he would arrive to work late and to ask if he had any important meetings to attend that morning. Second, Steve also was not aware of an important meeting he had scheduled for that day that required him to review material prior to the meeting. A good manager not only knows how to manage people, but also understands how to manage and delegate tasks effectively to reach common goals. As I read in the text “Leadership in Organizations,” there are certain characteristics a manager should possess in order to be successful. After reading the case about Steve, there are several areas he can work on in order to be a more effective manager. One thing Steve can do is become more organized. As a manager, it’s important to have all tasks organized with a level of priority and set personal deadlines to ensure nothing gets left behind. It’s also important to have all meetings written down so they can be seen at all times as well as have calendar sound alerts to be notified a day before the meeting. This will allow time for Steve to prepare for meetings and read over any material beforehand. Steve can also make sure before a meeting or activity takes place if he is needed. If he is needed, he needs to plan ahead of time to ensure he is prepared and at work on time. If he is not needed, he can send one of his production supervisors or assistant in his place so he can focus on other work tasks that he needs to complete or to catch up on work he needs to finish.
