Carnegie Mellon University, ranked in the top five universities for Computer Science, is a global research university and has been a birthplace of innovation since its founding in 1900. The Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science is known for world class faculties, mentoring, and hands on experience. Having such a rich history and very strong alumni network compels me to apply to Carnegie as I want to be a part of that alumni and want to achieve as much as they have. As the undergraduate major in Computer Science combines a solid core of Computer Science courses with the ability to gain substantial depth in other areas via a required minor in a second subject such as Human Computer or Robotics and offers unparalleled flexibility, I am certain that there will be no hindrance between me and my goal. Through the Mathematics and Probability Component of the university, I will have the tools to remain current as technologies and systems change, but at the same time gain insight into the practical issues of building and maintaining systems by participating in intensive project-oriented courses. I applied to UNC Asheville specifically because of its’ distinction as the designated state sponsored liberal arts university. In high school, the areas of study were limited and the course curriculums narrow. I expect a very different experience from my college education. The world is changing rapidly and I am not interested in a specializing in a focused course curriculum to fit into a slot that may not be available by the time I enter the job market. Knowing that I am not ready to concentrate my education in a specific direction is one of the main reasons I applied to UNC Asheville. The election night of 2000 was a pivotal moment in my life. I stayed up all night on November 7th, 2000, not because I was enthralled with watching Florida flip-flop between Gore and Bush, but because I had an IV in my arm which made it impossible to be comfortable. Earlier that evening, I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes, a disease affecting 1 of 800 people in America. This was an especially crucial time in my life, considering I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis—an autoimmune disease that attacks the GI track in 1 of 1400 Americans—the June before, and I had my Bar-Mitzvah in September. According to the Jewish religion, I had become an adult, and as such, I had decided to greet my new medical challenges with gusto, attempting to see the silver lining from the very beginning. I cannot say that I am glad I was nature’s statistical anomaly, but I am thankful for the opportunity to see from a young age how to turn a tough situation into a positive. After almost nine years, I come back to this pivotal night in my life because it marked a change that still plays a part in my life now, and will continue to shape me in the future.
College Admissions Essay If someone asked me where I am going to be in ten years, this would be my answer. I have a great, high-paying job, and beautiful wife and family, and a nice sports car parked in front of my lovely house. When I look into the future, I see myself being successful and happy. Even though I always pictured myself this way, I never worried too much about how I would get there.
I chose Carnegie Mellon because of the opportunities I will have after I graduate and while I am at Carnegie Mellon. In particular, I desire to major in computer science. I have chosen computer science because I enjoy the problem solving aspect. I like being handed a problem and then trying to code a solution to it. Beyond that, I enjoy trying to make my solution as efficient as possible.

The personal challenge that I faced mainly dealt with my health. Ever since I was child, I was very sick physically. The doctor recommended that I not play or participate in any type of sports because of my poor health. This led to a lack of confidence in myself to perform my best. I have always thought that there was a barrier somewhere in my life, and I could not pass that barrier because if I did then my life would certainly be in ruins. I was raised with the philosophies of the Chinese. I was told that no one could perform many tasks at once and be successful. Ever since, I always have an image that if I participated in activities at school then I would do poorly in my school work. I never pushed my limits to the maximum to challenge myself. It was as if there was a wall standing in front of me blocking me from being successful. I was always afraid that the consequences might be permanent and my grades would drop.
(1) Although the decision of where to attend Graduate school may have been hard for others this was one of the easiest decision I have had about my future. The staff, the program structure, and the opportunities that the MSA program at ECU offers are some of the reasons that I have decided to continue my studies at ECU starting in the summer of 2017 for the MSA program. I am ecstatic to be able to continue to study and learn in a program full of faculty that I am already familiar with as well as comfortable with to ask for assistance and guidance when I need it in the future. I remember being ecstatic about graduating highs school. Since my freshmen year my parents and I believed in one dream for my future, industrial engineering. Many of my family members had received an industrial engineering degree and it only made sense that I follow the same path. However, the end of senior year was closing in fast and many of my peers had already sent in college applications. I filled out applications to my schools of choice at least three times but I could never find myself content with submitting it.

I am a person who firmly believes in this and following this principle has made me diligent and persistent to know fundamentals. My interest in travelling and understanding different cultures has broadened my outlook with varying degrees of knowledge in a range of topics.

My program of choice, engineering, will undoubtedly be difficult and demanding, but I have spent my time in high school working hard to succeed.
