College Admissions Essay If someone asked me where I am going to be in ten years, this would be my answer. I will have a great, high-paying job, and beautiful wife and family, and a nice sports car parked in front of my lovely house. When I look into the future, I see myself being successful and happy. Even though I always pictured myself this way, I never worried too much about how I would get there. I feel the Suffolk University can lay the groundwork for making these dreams into reality. Regretfully, when I entered high school I did not realize how hard I had to work to get what I wanted. I went to my classes, did my work, but never really pushed myself to my full abilities. I thought that as long as I graduated with decent grades I would be able to get into college and really focus then. But as high school quickly came to an end I realized that I was not as well prepared for college, as I would have liked. By the time I was a senior I began concentrating more on my studies, and less on other things. Once I started applying myself, my grades improved, and so did my attitude about my education. Senior year flew by before I knew it, and I still had to take my SAT's. I was sick with bronchitis, but had to take them because it was the last available date. I struggled through them, knowing that if I had only not waited until the last minute, I could have redone them when I was healthy. It was too late though, so I was stuck with a score that I was not pleased with. Aft...
Although there are good reasons for emphasizing human sacrifice, there are even better reasons for emphasizing agriculture. An example is the Aztecs' exceptional use of their surroundings, such as the willow trees for anchors, and reeds for frames. Human sacrifice can be also emphasized for the Aztecs' belief that the Gods needed blood, but the spotlight is on agriculture.
Human sacrifice is one of the oldest practices of the Mesoamerican culture. The Aztecs, the last empire of the Mesoamericans, performed human sacrifices in their festivals as a means to show political power and to maintain the order of the universe. The Mexica Empire also considered war and sacrifice to be essential in the gaining of their vast territories. It is believed that hundreds, or even thousands, of victims were sacrificed each year at the Aztec religious sites. However, in addition to the religious ritual, sacrifices had the effect of intimidation for outside visitors/ enemies and the population in general.
When the Spanish began to arrive in Mexico and in Central America in the early 15th century, one of the many civilizations they found was the Maya. The Maya, building upon the Olmec culture, were located in present-day Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, southern Mexico, and the Yucatan Peninsula. Even though they had many similarities, the Maya were separated by language differences. Because of that they were organized into city-states. Since there wasn’t a single city-state powerful enough to impose a political structure, the period from 200 A.D. to the arrival of the Spanish was characterized by the struggle of rival kingdoms for dominance.
From the perspective of the Aztecs, sacrificing their people’s lives and worshipping gods served a greater purpose. To elaborate, the Aztecs believed that the gods had sacrificed their own lives so that the humans could live, and naturally, the Aztecs felt in debt of the gods. This was the reason for the many sacrifices and offerings given towards gods. Another contributing factor was that the Aztec lived in constant fear that the world would come to an end. As a result, their religion’s key focus, was on keeping nature in balance, and to do so, they need to keep the gods happy. Therefore, the reason behind worshipping and sacrifices was so that the Aztec’s could live in harmony with nature and their gods.
Being an agriculturally dependant empire, the Aztec’s religion was based highly on the forces of nature and worshipped them as gods. The god of war, Huitzilopochtli, was the most important deity. They had many other important gods, such as Tlaloc, the god of rain, Quetzalcoatl, the god of wind and of learning, and Tenochtitlan, the sun god. The Aztecs believed in order to appease these and many other gods that they needed to perform human sacrifices. The main purpose of the great Aztec pyramids was, in fact, human sacrifices. They also believed that there were “lucky'; and “unlucky'; days for baptism and to declare war on, which were decided by a priest.
Adolescence. The instinctive phenomenon that delivers many suspicions and guilty pleasures that haunt the young mind of adolescent until the coming of age. However, the absence of adolescence delivers the vacancy of knowledgeable wings that fly up to moral intelligence. It epitomizes the meager amount of light that provides sight to the step directly in front of one’s self, rather than light radiating upon the rest of the staircase; the unknown world of adulthood. Carlo Collodi, author of The Adventures of Pinocchio, delivers the perfect collaboration of this ethical message on adolescence and an accurate propinquity to the lives of children. Pinocchio, the wooden puppet and nose-growing misfit, becomes easily astray from his morals and encounters many disastrous events. Geppetto, hopeless father of Pinocchio, makes many sacrifices for Pinocchio, but Pinocchio displays the natural attribute of an adolescent which is self-centeredness. This particular behavior of the adolescent Pinocchio, stimulates him into pleasurable temptation and carefree fun. Colloid’s characterization, epic symbolism, metaphysical aspects, and an immense deal of archetypes all introduce the portrayal of proto-adulthood, structured education versus individualism, and humanity growing out of foolishness. Collodi succeeds in pointing out that disobedience and pleasure-seeking behavior lead to evil and unhappiness. Thereon the natural attribute of adolescence, narcissism, must be outgrown to avoid the declivity to corruptive integrity. Overall, Collodi rehashes the emblematic lesson of child obedience by approaching it in a metaphysical manner: children need proper guidance to avoid egocentricity and live in proto- adulthood.
There were sacrifices where the Aztecs would have sacrificed animals instead of humans and sacrifices where humans would purposely cut themselves to offer their blood to their gods usually to clear a blood-debt or for worshipping.
We all have aspirations in life that we want to achieve and although everyone’s goals in life may be different we all want to end up with the same thing, a life we are proud of. For me, a life I would be proud of consists of many factors such as having a family, a job I love, and being able to achieve all my dreams and not have any regrets. Henry David Thoreau once said,“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours”. Finding a major that I will end up loving for the rest of my life is one of my many dreams and because of all my research I am one step closer to achieving it.
The final reason for emphasizing human sacrifice is motive for war and expansion. According to the map on document A, Aztec warriors had the reputation of being fierce fighters. Independent territories on the map were sometimes the result of a deliberate policy that unoccupied lands remain available for future “flower wars” in order to provide an ongoing supply of “flowers.” (captured sacrificed victims) This evidence supports emphasizing human sacrifice because in document A it talks about how the Aztec warriors had a reputation of being fierce fighters. Lands remain available for future “flower
In conclusion, I was fortunate enough to understand many important things in life. One of those things is that we do not always begin at the desired start line, but through effort and strong will we can arrive at the desired finish line, where the outcome of our plans and goals reside. In my pursuit of education, I faced many challenges and hardships, but I always viewed them as temporary setbacks not as a finish line. I am certain that an opportunity to study at the UW would help me reach my finish line.

They were the only pre-Hispanic civilization with an advanced written language and a very developed culture and body of knowledge that included the most advanced mathematics, art, architecture and a very accurate astronomy. The Mayans developed sophisticated hydraulic systems, built extraordinary palaces, and designed and built pyramids and buildings believed to be observatories which were aligned with some celestial bodies and marked some of the most important astronomical eve...
Throughout my education I have watched my peers force themselves to school, never having the desire to learn or wanting to be apart of the joys of education. I am proud to say that I have received the desire of learning. Learning isn’t something that is forced or pushed upon me. I have been able to learn because that's what I’ve wanted. As a student, I am proud of my achievements. I spread myself thin with work, school, and sports but I enjoy having much on my plate I like the challenge of learning in that I can learn about anything I wish. Throughout my education I have succeeded, I have been in numerous AP and honors classes through my academic career and I have also obtained academic awards with my time in school. I believe Mount Saint Joseph is going to suit me best for what I’d like to do with my future. I plan to persevere and dedicate myself to my work, MSJ has the best staff I can find that will help with this rigorous task.
(1) Although the decision of where to attend Graduate school may have been hard for others this was one of the easiest decision I have had about my future. The staff, the program structure, and the opportunities that the MSA program at ECU offers are some of the reasons that I have decided to continue my studies at ECU starting in the summer of 2017 for the MSA program. I am ecstatic to be able to continue to study and learn in a program full of faculty that I am already familiar with as well as comfortable with to ask for assistance and guidance when I need it in the future. The accounting department staff has been a big help in my undergraduate career and I look forward to working under their direction again in the Master’s program. Furthermore,
The transformation between the simple hunter-gathers society and the complex Mayan state occurred from the Pre-Olmec Period between 1200 and 400 BC to the Late Classic Maya society between AD 700 and 800.The Pre-Olmec Period signified pre-complex society due to the structure of egalitarianism and diversity in cultures, this is significantly different to the Maya society that witness not only the upheave of literature, counting system, religious ideology and political hierarchy. What is significant about this era is these innovations not only created social classes and allowed high upkeep for large population densities, they were able to unify the geopolitical sphere of cities under the same language and belief system through accepted iconography in art repre...
