I applied to UNC Asheville specifically because of its’ distinction as the designated state sponsored liberal arts university. In high school, the areas of study were limited and the course curriculums narrow. I expect a very different experience from my college education. The world is changing rapidly and I am not interested in a specializing in a focused course curriculum to fit into a slot that may not be available by the time I enter the job market. Knowing that I am not ready to concentrate my education in a specific direction is one of the main reasons I applied to UNC Asheville. During Governor’s School, I experienced a taste of the diversity offered by an Arts education and loved it. I am hoping to attend UNC Asheville and continue that experience. UNC Asheville’s vision of a diverse and inclusive community excites me. One of my main expectations of college is the opportunity to reach beyond my comfort zone, make new connections and broaden my view of the world. I can’t wait to join a college community emphasizing tolerance, respect for others and diversity in addition to providing a quality education. We live in a technologically advanced era, an era that has impacted communication immensely. Not only is communication important for social lives and individual development, but it also strikes the educational and academic spheres, as well. As a daughter of immigrant parents, I was given the immeasurable opportunity of getting an education here, in the United States. Next year, as I embark my first year at university, I hope to fully integrate myself into the community by getting involved in the Students' Union, joining the cheer team, volunteering where I can and making many new friends along the way. At university, I hope to maintain a high grade point average, granted that my education is extremely important to me and that I am extremely ambitious about achieving my goals.Therefore, I will commit lots of my time to my studies in hopes of being a successful student. Nevertheless, I am still looking forward to being a part of the community by devoting my extra time to helping those around me. In classes, I intend on being an active learner, a respectful student, and a helpful classmate; someone who is always willing to lend a hand to others. Through engaging in my community, I hope to bring joy to others around me by spending my time supporting local events, volunteering for fundraisers, and helping plan and organize campus activities.
I hope to leave NC State as a young adult who is ready and prepared to enter society with a determined mindset and hard work ethic. I believe that I will be perfectly capable of achieving my goals and and aspirations as an NC graduate, and will graduate with the experience to take on challenges that may await me in a future career. Although I am still unsure of my desired field of study, I am confident that I will be able to discover a career path I will enjoy through the Exploratory Studies college. I am applying to Hofstra University because this is a campus where I believe I will continue to flourish both academically and socially. Hofstra has an environment of diversity and inclusion that would cater to my socially inclined personality and ambition to become a healthcare professional. Walking the campus of Hofstra, there is an environment of inclusion at every corner of the campus and within every activity sponsored. Among the different activities and opportunities, such as the Multicultural Organization, the Sororities, the Courtyard Carnival, and especially the “Bring Your Own Bear to Movie Night”, shows that Hofstra is fully immersed and supportive of all types of interests and people. My extracurricular activities and groups that I belong to fall into the two main areas of my life that I am passionate about: community service and technology/science. I have always wanted to give back to my community because it is the community that has enabled me to be fortunate enough to have opportunities such as these where I can contribute, learn, and grow as a young adult. I have pursued a number of organizations devoted towards giving back and servicing my local community. Those organizations include: Boy Scouts of America, SMYLE youth group (Saint Margaret's Church), and Peer Advocates (Madison Youth and Family Services). The DHHS Tech Club, and the DHHS Hacking Club are the two main technology organizations that I take part in and also have active leadership roles in.
From a young age, I have realized that choices make us who we are. Our choices show our true characters far beyond our own attempts. But these decisions are not always so simple. One very appealing aspect of Cooper Union is that I can choose to have it all. I love that I can choose to major in Engineering but also take liberal arts classes as part of the core curriculum in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. This resonates with my interests because I love math and science but I also have interests in visual art and dance- now I can have both.
The election night of 2000 was a pivotal moment in my life. I stayed up all night on November 7th, 2000, not because I was enthralled with watching Florida flip-flop between Gore and Bush, but because I had an IV in my arm which made it impossible to be comfortable. Earlier that evening, I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes, a disease affecting 1 of 800 people in America. This was an especially crucial time in my life, considering I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis—an autoimmune disease that attacks the GI track in 1 of 1400 Americans—the June before, and I had my Bar-Mitzvah in September. According to the Jewish religion, I had become an adult, and as such, I had decided to greet my new medical challenges with gusto, attempting to see the silver lining from the very beginning. I cannot say that I am glad I was nature’s statistical anomaly, but I am thankful for the opportunity to see from a young age how to turn a tough situation into a positive. After almost nine years, I come back to this pivotal night in my life because it marked a change that still plays a part in my life now, and will continue to shape me in the future.
When diversity is being discussed, there are a plethora of ideas that are associated with it. Whether people are talking being put on a waitlist for college, about people of color, or about representation in the media, the subject of diversity is not rare. Recently, the conversation of diversity has become more common because colleges want to demonstrate that they have diversified campus. How would diversity on campus be defined? Most importantly, diversity is more than having an extraordinary personality. Race, gender, sexuality, and social status are a few of the superfluous traits that make an individual unique in a college’s eyes. In Sophia Kerby’s article, “10 Reasons Why We Need Diversity on College Campuses”, she notes that, while there has already been an effort to diversify high schools and middle schools, accepting students of different backgrounds is not as apparent in higher education (1) . According to the university’s mission statement, the institution values, ‘Accessible and affordable quality education that equips students with intellectual and professional skills, ethical principles, and an international perspective.’ They accomplish this message by using vivid pictures of the students interacting within the Charlotte area and with each other. This college also makes itself a top candidate for college by offering ninety competitive undergraduate majors which test the abilities and mental stamina of current and prospective students.
When I first came to McIntosh High School and stepped on the gym floor for my very first official workout with Coach Dowse, I was a young and overweight fourteen year old girl who loved to play basketball. If someone were to tell me that in just three short years I would become one of the very few African American captains in the history of our girls varsity basketball program, chances are I would have laughed at the assertion. Yet, here I am.
My main goal while attending Baylor would be to achieve the best education possible and improve myself as a person, as well as grow stronger in my faith. I am looking to become a Pre-Nursing student and I have heard that Baylor contains one of the best medical programs in this area, prompting it to be on the top of my list of potential colleges. One of the main reasons i was drawn to Baylor is it’s strong Baptist roots. I am a strong Christian and I strive to be the salt and light of the world, as Jesus called us to be. I see great potential for Baylor to help me grow in my faith while also preparing me for my future career.
In August of 2014, I began my college career at Columbia College; as a Midland Valley High School alum, I quickly thrust myself into a new environment. Columbia College is a private, and small, women’s college planted in the Richland County school district, a short eight minute drive from the University of South Carolina. Upon entering, I became active in many on-campus organizations, such as NAACP, Alpha Beta Tau, and much more; I attempted to leave my reserved self in the past. My last year there, sophomore year, I worked as a desk assistant for the freshman dormitory, leaving me with adequate time to work on my, seemingly, mounds of homework. Last year, I began researching universities that offer my chosen major. About the same time, I was selected to attend the Alabama Governor’s School at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. The Alabama Governor’s School is a 13-day residential program that gives gifted rising high school seniors an opportunity to explore their interest in academic, creative and leadership fields. Without being given this opportunity, Samford University would not have made my college list, let alone be my top choice. Samford University is one of the few colleges that offers a stand alone degree in Graphic Design, which would allow me to focus exclusively on classes that would be beneficial to my career. In my life as a student I believe that success, as an engineer in this day and age, requires technical competence and a combination of leadership, communication, and management. I am fortunate that I have gained much of these skills when I was elected and duly appointed as one of the Student's Representative Council (SRC) members in my high school. Being a leader, I have learned and trained myself the importance to have a good discipline, communication and managing skills. With that good foundation at high school I hope to reach academic excellence, leadership and a deeper understanding of the world in which I live when I experience university life through dedication, maximum effort, and hard work and eventually participating and contributing towards university’s strategic plan of global excellence education.
