Many experts believe that changing the nurse bullying environment is the responsibility of management. Hutchinson, Vickers, Jackson, & Wilkes (2006) are strong advocates for making the workplace more democratic and less hierarchical. Lewis (2004) points to “zero tolerance” policies that prevent violence and bullying altogether. They also recommend that student nurses receive training in preparing and coping with bullying. It is a sad commentary that experts in the field believe that training in how to respond to bullies should be part of the nursing curriculum.

This is a summary of a journal article titled “Workplace Bullies: Why they are successful and what can be done about it?” published in the Organizational Development Journal. The theory background is based on a research conducted by Djurkovic, McCormack, & Casimir (2005), which related workplace bullying and victims' reactions, divided in three possible categories: assertiveness, avoidance, and seeking formal help. According to the results of this research, the avoidance reaction was the most common revealed (p. 451). Also Ayoko, Callan & Härtel (2003) related bullying and conflict events in the workplace as well as interpersonal relationship problems, their intensity, frequency and duration in the organizational environment. The outcomes of this research were also analyzed by showing that bullying can promote counterproductive behaviors as consequence of “frustration, aggression and humiliation” (p. 285). Another study that supports that idea was written by Vega & Comer (2005) which suggests that “most frequently victims of bullying are unassertive, conflict avoidant, and make little effort to be part of the group” (p. 106).
Within Chapter 19 of the DOE it states that “ ‘Bullying’ means any written, verbal, graphic, or physical act that a student or group of students exhibits towards other particular student(s) and the behavior causes mental or physical harm to the other student(s); and is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating, threatening, or abusive educational environment for the other student(s).”(Education) This is what the school's definition of bullying is so that it children are able to identify what bullying is when seen. Currently, there is no federal law that directly addresses bullying alone. Although, if the bullying overlaps with some form of harassment then it can open up a case. Some examples would be making violent or death threats, physically harassment, proof of text messages or comments on social media, and committing hate crimes. Federally funded schools are obliged to address the issue of bullying, although 1 in 4 teachers see nothing wrong with bullying and will only intervene 4% of the time (stompoutbullying.org). Bullying in general should become a crime because of the affect it has on society and the victims. It is not taken as seriously as it should be taken in our society today.

Physical bullying is a serious problem, affecting the victim in many different ways. For it to be considered bullying the victim has to be targeted repeatedly and the bullies must intend to hurt the victim. Physical bullying usually includes hitting, pushing, slapping, tripping, stealing and even spitting. Bullies are often intimidating to their victims and usually stronger, as they pick on the smaller weaker peers around them. Students who bully others often have lack of self-control and doesn’t care or consider others. There are many ways in which this can affect the victim, like having damaged clothes and affects. This can get the victim feeling down and how it can also cost the parents because they will have to buy new clothes and resources
Bullying does not have a standard definition. Bullying can be anything from calling someone else names, beating them up just for the fun of it, to texting or messaging them on the internet or any mobile device. Any person can be the victim of bullying, not just children. Bullying causes many issues, physically, emotionally, and mentally, not only for the victim, but for their entire families as well. Bullies have many different reasons as to why they start bullying someone else. The actions done to the victim leaves them with only a few options on how to stop being bullied. How they handle it is always different.
