Attended PLC Guiding Coalition meeting.
The purpose of the meeting was to revisit what we believed a PLC was and come up with a plan on how to reenergize the rest of the staff. It was interesting to listen to everyone's opinions. From this meeting, I learned the importance of taking time to reflect/evaluate how new projects/changes are going and determine if adjustments need to be made.

Sharing leadership and collaboration has transformed the role. This was obvious when collaborating with the math interventionist. I was not able to visualize a schedule that could support a few kindergarten students needs in both reading and math, but by working with the math interventionist she was able to come up with a schedule that works. Effective collaboration will help me be more successful as a administrator.

Met with a student to discuss consequences another teacher set for his actions in the bathroom.
The students was upset because he did not think he should be punished for the noise in the bathroom. When coming to me, the teacher had already given him a consequence. I reviewed the bathroom expectation with the students and explained that in the future a better choice would be removing yourself for the situation. I believe that decisions have to be made to best help all students learn and can vary depending on the situation. In my first meeting and interview with her, she displays many if not all the leadership benchmarks of a Change Master and Facilitator. Defined by McEwan (2003), a Change Master is a highly effective principal who is flexible and futuristic. A realistic leader who is able to both motivate and manage change in an organized, positive, and enduring fashion. As a Change Master, she uses a situational approach since every school community requires somewhat different skills. Dr. Heaston respects change resisters, procures resources for her school, and trusts her teams which aligns with ISLLC Standard Six.
For this assignment, I completed a survey to assess my school’s literacy program by using a survey that was adapted from by Patty, Maschoff, & Ransom (1996) to analyze the instructional program and the school’s infrastructure. To be able to answer my survey, I needed to go colleagues of mine in the English Department and to my administration to help with these questions. Being a math teacher, we hardly ever discuss the literacy and the students’ acquisition of it in our department meeting during staff development days. Since I am not truly current with literacy acquisition in education, I am hoping to understand more from this process so I can help all my students. I want them to be able to read texts related to math and find information that will be useful to them during the year.
The critical incident that I will be explaining about is regarding an eight-year-old girl currently a student at Victory Independent School District (VISD). This student wrote on her class journal that her uncle was touching her in her private parts when no one was watching. The teacher was so confused to what to do when he read Bianca’s journal, especially because he was wondering if it was appropriate for him to ask her questions about it. The teacher was concern that due to being a male that the student was going to feel uncomfortable if he were to ask her about what she had wrote in her journal. The teacher did know what to do and he was so confused because he was reading and grading the journals at home during the weekend. He continued reading Bianca’s journal and feeling more worried about his student's well being at home.
Williams it’s very busy with learning stuff everywhere. The classroom has different section called ‘centers’ like the library. In the middle is where the desk are placed they are grouped into 5-6 student at each table. I immediately noticed some negative behavior management on the part of the teacher by yelling at the students that wasn’t listening to her instructions. Another behavior management tool that doesn’t seems to work completely well was the point system that give or take a point from any student based on their behavior or action throughout the day. Most students seem to not be so thrilled or fazed by losing a point or when they gained one. But the teacher used this system quite frequent to make her point and take action. An action taking by the teacher that I felt was problematic is when she questioned a student that was better behaved, if another student was misbehaving. Shawn is a fourteen year old student that has recently been sent to our school after recently being released from the treatment center. Shawn has psychological issues that affect his studies and his reading is currently at the third grade level. Shawn needs to be placed up front so his efforts can be monitored and help can be easily given. However, he has issues with other people being behind him. Shawn will set up front in my class, but when asked he requested that he be allowed to turn his chair sideways so he could watch the people behind him. This concession was given so Shawn could feel a sense of control over the situation. In other classes Shawn is required to set up front and is not allowed to turn sideways. While a seemingly small thing to teachers, this lack of control can change a situation from a pleasant one to one that ends in confrontation. The two of them neglected to even go back and get the water and decided just to take the long walk back to the classroom. Neither of them said a word to each other, because they were too embarrassed and upset at what had just happened. The two of them finally arrived back at the classroom all dirty and with no water. The teacher just shook her head and told them they still had 5 minutes of nap time. The two quietly went and slept for the rest of the day, because they were so exhausted from their adventure. Also, the teacher knowing it would be much easier to deal with the class when those two weren’t constantly yelling at each other allowed them to stay asleep.
