School Context: The Smithfield School is part of The School District of Philadelphia that serves 563 students in the grades from K-8. Smithfield student body is 80.2% African American, 5% White, 6.1% Asian, 1.4% Latino and 7.3% others. At the Smithfield School, 100% of the students are CEP Economically Disadvantaged (eligible for free lunch), during this school year (2014-2015). When it comes to school attendance the students had a academic school average of 93.2% and the teachers school attendance average was 88.4% compare to 93.4% among the School District of Philadelphia schools in 2013-2014. Williams it’s very busy with learning stuff everywhere. The classroom has different section called ‘centers’ like the library. In the middle is where the desk are placed they are grouped into 5-6 student at each table. I immediately noticed some negative behavior management on the part of the teacher by yelling at the students that wasn’t listening to her instructions. Another behavior management tool that doesn’t seems to work completely well was the point system that give or take a point from any student based on their behavior or action throughout the day. Most students seem to not be so thrilled or fazed by losing a point or when they gained one. But the teacher used this system quite frequent to make her point and take action. An action taking by the teacher that I felt was problematic is when she questioned a student that was better behaved, if another student was misbehaving. One thing I did notice about Christopher was since he tends to be very detail with his work, causing him to fall behind at times completing task not because he doesn’t know the material but because he’s slow at completing the work. This dysfunction can give the wrong impression that he doesn’t get or know the work given to him. Another dysfunction I noticed was that he isn’t very social with his classmates, but very friendly and willing to communicate with me while I’m there. In fact he is the only student initially to become excited when I come to the classroom. The impression I get is that he is a loner and mostly by default, but doesn’t quite know how to open up completely and communicate with others on him own. When he is doing his work or on the carpet for group learning he spaces out from the group, but if you weren’t directly paying attention to him you wouldn’t notice because he is very quiet, this can be a risk factor in his communication development. I observed during my last visit in creative drawing time Christopher continuously was drawing a man laying on the ground with x’s in their eyes and with red crayon markings underneath them. High school is a time for students to develop new interests, talents, and hobbies. As well as, prepare them with material they need for college or the workforce. Most schools, Sequoyah High School being amongst one of these schools, are lacking the resources that students need in order to pursue these academic interests. Although Sequoyah High School is a great high school for students in Monroe County, there are several issues that still need to change in order to help better the school system as a whole.
Students at East Brooklyn Community High School literacy level are very low. Students have trouble comprehending material, analyzing, writing, reading and using vocabulary words. Each lesson plan throughout a unit targets a learning strategy. My goal is to attack the use of vocabulary and building inquiry so students can become better reader and writers. The main aspect that drew me to attend Maryville University is that it offered online courses and the enrollment advisor. Online classes allow the flexibility for me to complete course work and assignments around my family, work life and community events. Some of the roles I have are: being a mother of 6 children, attending all their activities, director of nursing for an assistive living facility, girl scout troop leader and church women board. The enrollment advisor played a huge part in choosing the program. After a brief discussion about the Family Nurse Practitioner program I wasn’t just another student they were trying to get signed up for classes but the enrollment advisor invested time in me. Classroom management is one of the most essential skills to becoming an effective classroom teacher. Teachers who possess the ability to manage their classroom are able to create an environment where learning is the focus (Burden & Cooper, 2004). Although teachers may be well prepared and skilled with classroom management, at some point in time they will encounter a student or students whose behavior hovers authority and the functioning of the class. There is no simple way to deal with these difficult situations, but there are strategies to help. The first step is to identify the purpose of the behavior. A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), is a systematic set of strategies that are used to determine the underlying function or purpose of a behavior so that an effective intervention plan can be developed (NPDC, 2014).

In late June of 2017, the announcement was made that Indianapolis Public Schools was planning to close three of its high schools, Broad Ripple, Arlington, and Northwest, and a converted middle school, John Marshall, as well. By mid-September, the vote had been made and five out of the seven school board members had voted to close these schools and follow Superintendent Lewis Ferebee’s idea to reinvent the district’s high schools. Behavioral Management can be accomplished in several ways. Which of the many different theories and methods is right for you, will depend on your own philosophy regarding student behavior in your classroom. Different teachers will chose different methods, but all will agree with the importance of some type of a behavioral management plan. The best way for a teacher to develop their own management plan is to look at several of them and either chooses the one that is best for them, or use bits and pieces from several and merge them into one cohesive plan. In this paper I will introduce Lee Canter’s Behavior Management Cycle method of behavioral management, show you how it is applied, and relate my own personal thoughts as to the good and bad points of it.

Children have different strategies for learning and achieving their goals. A few students in a classroom will grasp and learn quickly, but at the same time there will be those who have to be repeatedly taught using different techniques for the student to be able to understand the lesson. On the other hand, there are those students who fool around and use school as entertainment. Teaching then becomes difficult, especially if there is no proper communication. Yet, teachers, creating a positive relationship with their students, will not necessarily control of all the disruptive students. The book, Responsible Classroom Discipline written by Vernon F. Jones and Louise Jones discuss how to create a learning environment approachable for children in the elementary schools. According to the Jones, “ Student disruptions will occur frequently in classes that are poorly organized and managed where students are not provided with appropriate and interesting instructional tasks” (101).
As stated earlier, I believe Classroom Management is the key to how learning can take place and students can feel safe participating. I hope to create an environment that is conducive to learning and involves all my students. I believe the most important part of classroom management is not the behavior problems but creating a good rapport with the students, encouraging them to succeed and setting high expectations for them. As well as using an engaging a curriculum, I believe you can create this environment and it will limit the behavior problems in your classroom from the
