Over three hundred are languages spoken in the United States today. This makes learning a second language helpful. I have enjoyed taking Spanish, a required class for my diploma at Eastern High School, and it has had a positive impact on my life. Eastern is not the only school that offers these types of programs. A lot of other schools do to but not all. For this reason, schools should offer bilingual education opportunities for high school students. In many nations, bilingual education is much less controversial than in the United States (Bilingual Education). Most of the arguments for bilingual education come from the educators who teach the bilingual classes. Supporters of bilingual education argue that children are best served by a system that uses their native language for their whole school day, and as they advance to higher education levels, they offer a second language (Bilingual Education). People will use a language all their lives and high school is the best place to start. The ability to learn more than one language while in school can give a student an advantage in the modern world (Lombardo). It is also important in college because you are more likely to communicate with people that speak other languages. In the most transitional programs, students move into full-time instruction in their major language after three or four years (Lombardo). It gives students more employment opportunities (Lombardo). Now people wonder why this has to do with learning a second language and their future. If their careers get them involved in anything that involves speaking in other countries, like a translator, they will need to know another language depending on where you go. If they would want to travel you might also want to know a second language. A second language is useful during and after college. Bilingualism is all over the world. This means that someone in China could be learning English and we would never know. It is amazing how we have all these different languages and all of them are spoken.

As students begin to plan out their high school classes, parents should strongly encourage their children to participate in bilingual education classes. Most schools that offer Academic and Technical Honors programs require these classes. Students at Eastern High School are required to have three
