Even though conventionally grown foods are cheaper it is worthwhile to invest into buying organic foods because they are healthier. It has been proven that many organic foods dramatically reduce pesticide levels, lower cholesterol, and create a healthy environment. In addition, feeding the livestock with natural foods is more humane and allows the animals to avoid constant antibiotic injections. Organic foods are not only safer for our immune system but also better for the environment. Most of the big, fast food corporations make the most money on the customers that want cheap, fast meals on the go. Usually customers with long work schedules primarily look for convenience and do not always think about the negative impact that eating conventionally grown foods will have on their health. Due to our economic situation today …show more content…
many customers focus on saving money, but most of them do not realize that in the long run their choice will not benefit them. "Democrats Education Workforce" estimated that about 40% of Americans now make less than minimum wage. Few people understand the risks of eating too much junk food or unhealthy foods. Even though organic food is expensive, eating it helps to improve your health in the long run; conventionally grown foods may seem like a smart choice right now but consuming them might have a harmful effect on your heath in the future. One of the negative results of eating foods that have hormones and have been treated with pesticides is obesity. Obesity has become an epidemic in America to the point where it has tripled in size over the last 30 years. Some dire effects of obesity include diabetes, strokes, cancer, and cardio vascular problems. All of these illnesses’ require expensive medical treatments and in the long run will cost more than buying organic food. Conventionally grown food contains pesticides that are intended to prevent any damage from insects, weeds, or diseases. However, there are numerous health risks associated with eating them, the effects of eating these type of foods range from simple fatigue to even death, in extreme cases. Another health problem in the food cooperation is Escherichia coli. It is due to food contamination. One example of how severe this issue can be was Kevin from "Food Inc" who died from food poisoning because of hazardous food. Unfortunately, this happened to Kevin because food industries have a different idea of running a business. Jamey Lionette claims our food changed as well, especially with faster transport and technologies trickery to extend the shelf (Mass Production of Food is Ruining Our Lives pg 100). Because of the high price of organic produce and the fact that growing food naturally takes time, many farmers are losing their jobs. Farmers want to avoid using substances, but this option brings out a growing number of unemployment. Not only do customers save money, but it also helps the community of the farmer. More money goes towards the farmer instead of marketing and distribution which strengthens the local economy. Organic food not only helps with health issues, but it also helps customers emotionally.
Many times when people eat too much junk food or conventionally grown foods they become depressed, frustrated, or self-conscious. Being overweight many times affects the person’s self-esteem causing that individual to eat more. These foods are known as "comfort food", so this viscous cycle just continues. Also, the hormones and bacteria inside the conventionally grown food make a person feel lazy because of all the bloating and digestive problems. Organic food helps a person stay physically fit; feeling good and healthy helps to increase self-confidence. Studies show that people with an organic lifestyle show less aggression and are more open to socializing while subjects with unhealthy food show patterns of isolation and paranoia (Healthy Eating). Food also supplies power for your brain's stability. Without a proper diet of organic food, the process of learning and memorizing will become more difficult after a certain amount of time. According to "American Psychologist" calorie reduction will protect against obesity related problems and cognitive
impairment. Organic farms also keep the environment healthy. Organic agriculture involves the use of natural soils, rivers and air; non-toxic chemicals are used for livestock and plants. Pesticides can make reproduction harder for animals and might even kill them because of the rapid growth. Since hormones are injected, many animals’ bodies cannot keep up with the organ growth spurts which may cause pain for the animal. One example is the beef industry. Antibiotics in conventionally grown meat production are intended to create resistance against strains of bacteria. If a customer were to get sick from these strains, they would be less responsive to any type of antibiotic treatment. Not feeding the cows any chemicals or hormones prevents a risk of mad cow disease. Furthermore, the animals have more space to move around more freely rather than being constricted in a confound space. In addition, with no dependence on fossil fuels, the environment stays cleaner. Researchers claim that if all America's croplands were converted to organic it would be the equivalent to taking 217 million cars off the road and the carbon reduction would be high (Stonyfield Organic). An average transport distance for conventionally grown food is about 1,500 miles. Overall, the fossil fuels emit carbon dioxide which intoxicates the air. Organic farms also do not contain any genetically modified organisms (GMO's). GMO's are animals or plants that have their DNA altered in order to see if they can speed the process of growth. Organic food contains great amounts of vitamin C, natural minerals, and antioxidants. In addition, many customers who suffer from allergies to chemicals or certain foods see a decrease in symptoms when switching to organic farms. Customers should commit themselves to a healthier organic lifestyle. Organic crops overall are grown in safe, all natural soil with no modifications or genetic alternations. Many conventionally grown foods contain bacteria and diseases that may threaten a customer's life. Although the economy affects our choices heavily and organic foods are expensive, eating them has many long term benefits. Natural farming methods allow the humane treatment of the livestock and make the consumers healthier and the environment cleaner.
Americans, as a whole, are fat, over-indulged, lazy, entitled humans. As a whole, yes, yes Americans are all of these things. In 2004, Alison Motluk, a freelance journalist who writes for numerous magazines including the New Scientist, The Walrus, and The Economist, pens an article called “Supersize Me: It’s Time to Stop Blaming Fat People for Their Size.” Motluk blames the food industry for increased portions. She blames the food industry for unhealthy, addictive additives dumped into our food. She blames the food industry for easy access to fast food. She blames city growth for making it near impossible to walk to get food therefore, people have to drive to get sustenance. Motluk blames schools for fat children because physical education
Take a second to understand why fast food firms choose to sell products that are unhealthy. Their unhealthy products are in a high demand in the food market; in fact, they are simply giving us what we demand for. Most firms have started putting food labels on their menus so there is no room for excuse when making the right food choices. Nobody is forcing us to eat a whole box of Krispy crème donuts or a super-size meal at McDonalds. I believe that we are always looking for shortcuts in life and now we can anticipate there is a shortcut in what we put into our bodies. So we are consistently after things that are cheap, fast and affordable. Who better to attend to our needs than the fast food industry?
“What are we going to eat?” is a big question that we ask ourselves three time a day. We are eating the same kinds of foods over and over again. Most of our foods come from the supermarket, but many of us do not know where the foods origins. Most people don't realize the nutrition facts behind the fact. They are just simply filling up the stomach. As Michael Pollan, the author of Omnivore’s Dilemma, states: “Industry food system is most important reasons that make people unhealthy and obesity. Yet, eating organic food are considering healthier than industry food.” I believed although industry foods have less nutrition, and bad effects on human, individual responsibilities serve as the most important factor of the obesity in United States.
Audience Relevance: Everyone should know why we need to choose organic food over conventional food. Buying organic food has improved my life and it can improve yours as well instead of risking your life eating food that have been exposed to numerous chemicals.
Today people are concerned with what they eat in order to lose or maintain their weight. What people do not know is how their food is obtained, how veganism is beneficial to their health and what the food industry thinks of vegans. Veganism is the avoidance of any animal products particularly food. Veganism confronts the issues of animal welfare as well as dietary concerns for humans. It is an effective method to live a healthy and humane lifestyle.
Processed foods are in everybody’s lives, but are they safe? Processed foods are foods that are in boxes, cans, or bags usually containing artificial colors, flavors, and other chemical ingredients that most people can’t pronounce or recognize (SFGate). Processed Foods may taste good but can have terrible side effects. Most people don’t see the harmful effects of processed foods. Processed foods should not be eaten.
As time has progressed, there has always been an overarching need for high amounts of crop production throughout the world. With the rapid rate of population growth, the need for crops and other sources of nutrients is only increasing. In order to meet these high demands and increase yields, farmers and other agriculturalists have started implementing the use of pesticides. These chemical mixtures are being used in order to prevent, destroy, repel or mitigate any pests from destroying growing crops. However, using pesticides on crops can create massive amounts of pollution, negatively affect an individual’s health, and can spark biodiversity loss within an ecosystem. According to Michael C.R. Alavanja, “Over 1 billion pounds of pesticides are used within the United States (US) each year and approximately 5.6 billion pounds are used worldwide”. With all this in mind, it is clear that pesticides should not be made available to farmers and agriculturalists, and should
Ever thought to yourself before you dug into that perfectly cooked steak or that juicy chicken what that animal went through to get on your plate? What that cow had to go through or that chicken? A lot of people do not think about it. Among mammals 41,700,000 cows and calves were killed for food in 2000, as well as 115,200,000 pigs and 4,300,000 sheep, for a total of 161,200,000. (Animal liberation front ).
Organic food is generally not much healthier than regular fruits and such nutrition wise with a few exceptions. “Higher vitamin C concentrations were found in organic leafy vegetables, such as spinach, lettuce, and chard versus the same conventionally produced vegetables in 21 of 36 (58%) studies”( Foreman). Also mentioned is that organic and nonorganic milk is not much different as “In general, milk has the same protein, vitamin, trace mineral content, and lipids from both organically and conventionally reared cows.”( Foreman).Despite the exception, it has been stated that the exception does not have strong enough evidence that can let a statement such as “eating organic food is more beneficial than eating conventionally grown food” stand on its own and be taken seriously. Another unfortunate circumstance on organic food is the price. On average, anything organic is priced higher than non-organic food, and according to Digestive Specialists Inc., it “…costs anywhere from 20 to 100 percent more than regular produce” (Digestive Specialists). The higher price leaves any financially struggling person or family less likely to invest in organic food when there is always a cheaper option available, even if the cheaper product isn’t beneficial to their health. The reason for this, mentioned by Health Research Funding,“…Organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, they tend to produce smaller quantities. Their method of farming is also more labor-intensive with weed pulling and crop rotation. And then there is the issue of supply and demand – as the demand for organic produce increases, so does the price” (Health Research Funding). The quality of organic fruits, while being mostly free of pesticides and chemicals, can also have a lot less time to deteriorate compared to non-organic foods. To summarize the issue, Mayo Clinic states that, “Because organic fruits and vegetables aren 't
Food is a major part of everyone’s everyday life. It’s hard to imagine life without the chocolate cake on your fingers or a carne asada taco in your mouth. Enjoying delicious desserts and fast food seem extremely magnificent to eat and spend money buying them. Although, there have been many controversies in the United States on how it’s the largest country with the most obesity regarding children, which affects their health, many people are still going throughout their day snacking. Many people in America are having full course meals with thousands of calories in one sitting not knowing the short term or long term side effects that are going to take a huge toll on their lives. Food is delicious, but it comes with a secret behind the savoriness/sweetness.
they can increase choice of organic foods. Nevertheless, for the majority of people, they need cheaper food, and they should regard conventional foods as their first choice. No matter what people choose organic or conventional foods, their main purpose is to get a healthier body. If people focus on changing their eating habits, not comparing organic foods with conventional foods, they will be healthier. As long as people can change their eating habits like eating more vegetables and less meat, they will get a healthier body whether they eat organic or conventional foods.
“Healthy eating” means eating a variety of foods that gives you the nutrients you need to maintain your health, feeling good with your health conditions, and having enough energy throughout the day (Nordqvist). A poor diet can cause harm a person’s daily life activities. Research from Eating Healthy Might Prove Too Expensive for Poor ABC News shows, that the price of eating healthy foods may be expensive to a family who earns a low-income. So, eating fast foods may be more convenient for them knowing that the prices are way less. However, everyone should make the effort to stop eating foods that will later on harm your health. As mentioned in the article “Healthy Eating”, “Healthy eating is not about strict dietary limitations, staying unrealistically
As we stroll the aisles of our local supermarkets we see all kinds of food products, but does it ever occur to you how fresh or natural these products maybe. Organic farming prohibits any use of artificial chemicals, growth hormones, or antibiotics in the production of its crops and livestock. Organic farming has existed for centuries, but after the industrial revolution factory farming was arising. Organic farming does not allow the use of any pesticides in its crops or livestock production, but also helps sustain a good economic flow in rural communities. Although there are many benefits of organic farming, there is a lack of credibility some farmers provide within the distribution of their products and some argue that there’s no difference
Junk food has been proven to be unhealthy long time ago. Junk food started to grow more and more recently and spread fast all over the world. Junk food reveals any food with high calories and low nutritional value. A big problem with junk foods is that satiation value of them is low, that means people need to eat a large amount of that unhealthy foods to feel full. So it is like eating a lot of poisons for a long time, what do you think the result will be on the health condition of the humans? Another problem of junk foods tend to replace other healthy foods; people who drink a lot of soda there is no room for healthy natural fruit juice in their stomach, people who are snacking on cookies, they’re not eating fruits and healthy vegetables (WebMD
Nutrition is the process of obtaining and consuming the right nutrients you need in order to grow and survive. These nutrients consist of water, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, and fats. What you choose to eat has a significant impact on your well being, growth and overall health. Bad nutrition can lead to lifelong consequences such as Diabetes, High blood pressure, Obesity, Cardiovascular disease and even some Cancers.
