“What are we going to eat?” is a big question that we ask ourselves three time a day. We are eating the same kinds of foods over and over again. Most of our foods come from the supermarket, but many of us do not know where the foods origins. Most people don't realize the nutrition facts behind the fact. They are just simply filling up the stomach. As Michael Pollan, the author of Omnivore’s Dilemma, states: “Industry food system is most important reasons that make people unhealthy and obesity. Yet, eating organic food are considering healthier than industry food.” I believed although industry foods have less nutrition, and bad effects on human, individual responsibilities serve as the most important factor of the obesity in United States. Eating industry food is your own responsibilities even though industrial food is convenience. People eat industry food especially fast-food because it is simple and fast. Many people are so busy at their life such as working, studying, and playing. We also no longer live in the old fashion days which women stay at home and do the housework. Fast-food restaurant is everywhere as you can see it today. It provided a fast and quick serve for you. Murray claim: “While you’re pumping your gas you punch in the Fritos, the Twinkies and the coke, and somebody brings it you your car. So the physical activity required to go in and get it is eliminated.”(qtd in murry 33). It is accessible in your daily activities. You can get it in a short period of time such as during lunch break at work and school. Brownlee states: “These guys ate at fast-food joints because they had absolutely no interest in cooking for themselves and didn’t give a rip about the nutritional quality of food. People can choose to refuse fast food yet fast food is very convenient to them. Although fast food is everywhere, there are also health foods everywhere. For example, the cafeterias in the universities have many different kinds of food. They have fast food but they also have salads and fruits. You can choose fried chicken with French fries or you can choose a subway sandwich with a salad for your meal. In conclusion, stop blaming the food industry that makes you fat while the choice is on your hand. If you really care about your health and your family member health, please spare some time and cook for your own food, read the label before buying food, limit the intake of your meal and finally take reasonability of what you put into your month.
Michael Pollan and David Freedman are two reputable authors who have written about different types of food and why they are healthy or why they are damaging to our health. Michael Pollan wrote “Escape from the Western Diet” and David Freedman wrote “How Junk Food Can End Obesity”. Imagine Pollan’s idea of a perfect world. Everything is organic. McDonald’s is serving spinach smoothies and Walmart is supplying consumers with raw milk. The vast majority of food in this world consists of plants grown locally, because almost everyone is a farmer in order to keep up with supply and demand. How much does all this cost? What happened to all the food that is loved just because it tastes good?
When we think of our national health we wonder why Americans end up obese, heart disease filled, and diabetic. Michael Pollan’s “ Escape from the Western Diet” suggest that everything we eat has been processed some food to the point where most of could not tell what went into what we ate. Pollan thinks that if America thought more about our “Western diets” of constantly modified foods and begin to shift away from it to a more home grown of mostly plant based diet it could create a more pleasing eating culture. He calls for us to “Eat food, Not too much, Mostly plants.” However, Mary Maxfield’s “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating”, argues differently she has the point of view that people simply eat in the wrong amounts. She recommends for others to “Trust yourself. Trust your body. Meet your needs.” The skewed perception of eating will cause you all kinds of health issues, while not eating at all and going skinny will mean that you will remain healthy rather than be anorexic. Then, as Maxfield points out, “We hear go out and Cram your face with Twinkies!”(Maxfield 446) when all that was said was eating as much as you need.
Fast food has infiltrated every nook and cranny of American society. Everywhere you turn you can see a fast food restaurant. An industry that modestly began with very few hot dog and hamburger vendors now has become a multi-international industry selling its products to paying customers. Fast food can be found anywhere imaginable. Fast food is now served at restaurants and drive-through, at stadiums, airports, schools all over the nation. In his essay “The American Paradox”, Michael Pollan illustrates his conclusion that Americans who focus on nutrition have a higher probability of decreasing their well-being. Pollan defines the American paradox as “a notably unhealthy population preoccupied with nutrition and the idea of eating healthily.” For most of our human history, our parents and culture have influenced our diet. However, today the idea of what to eat has been based on the opinions of scientists, food markets, and nutritionists. I agree with Pollan’s argument that being preoccupied with what we eat makes us unhealthy, however, we need a balance and a sense of responsibility in what we eat.
Eating five to six servings of fruit, choosing whole grains or even just avoiding foods high in density can be a step closer to reducing chances of becoming obese or overweight. Mark Bittman in his article, “Is junk food really cheaper,” argues that Americans are wasting their money on junk food or fast food restaurants when that money could be used towards a healthy home cooked meal. He persuades the readers to have alternatives. Instead of buying McDonalds’ French fries people should get apple slices, instead of drinking sodas drink water, instead of buying junk food get vegetables. Bittman states, “The fact that junk food is cheaper than real food has become a reflexive part of how we explain why so many Americans are overweight, particularly those with lower incomes.” I agree food (fast food) plays a huge role unto why Americans are so overweight. It is because fast food is so convenient and inexpensive to some. Even if a person wanted to eat healthy from a fast food restaurant, salads are more expensive than a burger or chicken nugget meal. How can a person with low income choose the “healthy” way when the healthy way is more expensive? Although fast food can be beneficial more so convenient in the short term, it can be very detrimental in the long term. The food industry continues to be a major contributor to health problems in the United States and around the world. Currently, 13% of the world’s 671 million obese individuals live in the United States. (Kaplan) Some believe that it is the government’s responsibility to go to educate the people and then to further encourage them to make wise decisions on what they choose to eat. Others argue that it is the consumer’s personal responsibility to educate themselves and make a conscious decision about their food. After all, we have the freedom to do so. Repeatedly the news will highlight a story about the obesity epidemic sweeping the nation. Although the news and health experts bombard the common citizen with quick and easy ways to eat healthier and exercise more, the source of the issue is kept hidden behind closed doors. Before placing blame on the eating habits, it’s essential to take a closer look at what is being consumed. With rapid change in the food industry, progress must be met with caution because “The way we eat has changed more in the past fifty years than in the past 10,000” (Pollan and Schlosser). It is easy for the common man to provide the blanket statement of eating “better”, yet few actually proceed to do this. The average American has one of the worst diets in the world although opportunity and variety of options are overwhelming. Food industries are deceiving by masking the true process of how their food is produced. Not only does the eye not see how the food was made, but there is also a false sense of variety in the grocery market. The grossly unbalanced American diets and genetically modified organisms both coexist to create a greater problem than previously thought of.
Organic has long since been a highly accredited term for food. To be organic is to be pure, natural, and above the dirty industrial system that food production has become. This definition however has become tainted. The truth is that organic foods are anything but healthier. In Michael Pollan’s research book The Omnivore’s Dilemma the validity of organic foods are discredited. Pollan argues about organic food, as it is misleading consumers.
While in “Where Does Polysorbate 60 Come From Daddy?” in Twinkie Deconstructed”, by Steve Efflinger is a discussion of the ingredients of food and how we are so unaware of where more than half of these ingredients come from. This story really had no influence on me as I found it but it relates to my own story as well as “We Are What We Eat” by Pollan. In Pollan’s essay he explains how corn is in everything that we eat and he uses facts and quotes to get his point across just like in “Where Does Polysorbate 60 Come from Daddy?” Efflinger says, “Some Ingredients like most of those at the bottom of the list, are either minerals or are so highly processed that they really do qualify as chemical rather than foods”.(Efflinger 19) However, this relates to me because I am also unaware of what is exactly in the food I eat. Therefore relating back to the “Food Inc.” movie, consumers are highly in the dark of the foods they eat making it almost impossible to influence the average consumer to change their eating habits without being educated. Truly organic foods are hard to come by and, the price of organic foods has become unparalleled to the costs of ailing fast foods. The average American has easy access to fast foods but struggles to find truly organic foods causing the obesity rates to skyrocket. Obesity seems to be a constantly rising epidemic in America, but we as Americans seem to be oblivious to the obvious. Many of us express our freedom by talking, writing, and drawing. So the same should be said for eating. If we choose to eating a Big Mac over a home-grilled hamburger then so be it. If we choose to watch the super-bowl rather than playing football then so is it. Which all provide either ready to eat food, or it will be ready really quick, hence the name “fast food”. The process they use to make the food is very efficient, so efficient it makes you question if the food is really food. All the food is processed, all made in a factory somewhere, using god knows what kind of ingredients, then frozen and shipped to all the restaurants over America. People say that Americans are becoming addicted to it, or are addicted with the efficiency of it. Being able to stop quick, get fast food and go on about their day with minimal time loss. Why not right? Why wouldn't you save your time, by simply grabbing some fast food? Being that it’s so efficient, there’s no way that it’s going to have the same health value as a home cooked meal. Due to the food industry’s carelessness over people’s health and their lust to become more rich, they are causing people all over the US and the world become obese. The food industry claims this problem in society is not their fault, but because they label their products and so it is the people’s fault for not eating responsibly. Our communities are full of fast-food restaurants making people who busy working buy this junk they so call food not only for themselves but for their families too. The food industry states that they have nothing to do with the fast-food industry but in the contrary they supply the fast-food industry with their products and in the end they both win and the people lose. These are some of the justifications the food industry claims that are the reason as to why we have obesity in the US and the world.
