Animation is “the art of bringing to life” in other words it is a simulation of movement by displaying a series of pictures or frames. The earliest animation started even before the Stone Age. Stone Age artists used a lot of cartoon like techniques to show motion in the form of cave paintings, where the head or tail was drawn to show movement. These paintings are mostly found in Lascaux cave. Bone disc is another form of Thaumatrope that showed motion. The most convincing case is that of a Magdalenian bone disc where on one side the horse is drawn standing and on the other side the horse is drawn sitting, when the disc is turned a peculiar motion is seen. One of the greatest examples to show motion and to show that animation started during the Stone Age is that of an earthen bowl that was excavated in Iran’s burnt city. The bowl depicts a deer hopping and going towards a tree and eating the leaves.
After this stage was the invention of illusion toys based on the toys that was found during the Stone Age. Some of these toys included the Thaumatrope and the flipbook. All these toys worked on the persistence of vision. They were all traditional toys that could only be hand held. These Thaumatropes are used even now in some movies to show the persistence of vision, for example in the film “PRESTIGE” and “HUGO”. After this was the flipbooks, where images were drawn on each paper and when the book is flipped a beautiful motion is seen. This was the first step into the world of animation. The next stage was the introduction of traditional animation. Traditional animation otherwise known as cel animation is where the artistic mind has to be converted into a sequence of still frames and all these frames are drawn by hand.

Animation has turned into a worldwide medium of use and it is no longer a slave to Hollywood. The vastness of CGI will change the character and the content of film animation. In addition to filling entertainment in theatres, television and even advertising departments, animation is an essential teaching element for education and industry. Animation is no longer looked down upon as a poor relative to live action film making. Soon animation will be used in medicine for performing live surgeries virtually. The world of animation will never die, just like how technology increases step by step, animation is also rising gradually. Technology has changed animation drastically from when it was first introduced, and for the best. People usually think of cartoons when they hear the word “animation”, and it’s understandable as to why. Animation did start out with cartoon-like drawings, and for a while most of the animation seen on TV was directed towards children.
The obvious similarity between motion graphics and non-moving graphics is they both seek attention through demanding imagery. Throughout this essay I will discuss which type of graphic does this most successfully. Where motion graphics excels in narrative and story telling, non moving graphics are able to engage audiences through a powerful single image. The first 2D animation was created in by Emile Cohl in 1908 called “Fantasmagorie”. The animated film was 70 seconds made with 700 images and 24 frames per second for making the ending according to Kieran Kane’s presentation “The History of Animation”. In 1928, Walt Disney used 2D animation to create the first Mickey Mouse cartoon “ Steamboat Willie”. The cartoon was also the first animated film to have a sound track in the background according to “ The History of Animation”. After this event, many companies like Walt Disney, Warner Bros, and Hanna-Barbera started creating cartoons and commercials with paper 2D animation in 1930s to 1970s; these were known as the “year of animation”. In the beginning of animation, animators created images using pen and paper. They were then arranged to give the illusion of movement and depth. This type of animation is called traditional or 2D animation. This style is a great option if the animator is working with characters and want the benefits of a hand drawn quality. However, with 2D animation the animator would need to start completely from a scratch piece of paper to change the camera angle for a scene. Also, truth is fewer and fewer animators can create drawings needed to make a beautiful 2D animation. Today, animators have turned more to 3D animation. 3D animations are created on a computer, with modeling programs to produce a much more realistic and complex animation experience. What helps in making a lifelike animation, is the simple fact that it can be viewed and lit from all angles. 3D animation also adds textures that can be placed into live scenes and elements. This style can work for any concept and offers flexible, customizable, and an overall fluid motion. A friend (a non-animator) of J.K. Riki was asked why he thought 3D compared to 2D was “more real”. He replied and said, “blurs the line between fantasy and reality” and “a child’s daydream – and all other ages – is theoretically 3D, so it’s like their fantasies come to life”. However, what an animator must know is to achieve beautiful movement within the animation, animators must apply the same principles that apply to 2D.
