In the Wall Street Journal article, “Does Technology Belong in Classroom Instruction,” Lisa Neilson and José Antonio Bowen take opposing sides to the topic of technology being integrated into instructional material. Neilson argues that instructing students on using technology appropriately and effectively can benefit and prepare students for the fast paced future. She claims that the use of electronics in the classroom encourages students to expand their knowledge of assignments and improves their literacy. Neilson states that students use their digital devices to upload English papers and receive feedback from people all around the world, conducting virtual dissections, and utilizing resources to further their understanding (Neilson, 2015).
Over the past few decades, technology has advanced significantly. The use of calculators, computers, and other techniques in many fields has increased. On a large scale, technology is replacing traditional methods of instruction in the field of education. Many people believe that adopting technology in the learning process can increase productivity. However, David Gelernter, a professor at Yale University and a leading figure in the field of technology, suggests limiting the use of technology in the classroom in his article “Unplugged: The Myth of Computers in the Classroom,” published in the New Republic magazine in 1994.
Just spending some time in the modern-day classroom; I have observed several students on their phones. During my high school years we did not have to worry about cell phones or laptops being a constant problem. In Annie Murphy Paul’s “You’ll Never Learn!” she explains the studies of multitasking while students do their homework with the modern-day distraction of the digital age; resulting in a lower quality of learning. I agree with Paul that the digital age is becoming a problem in education, even though educators are leaning towards teaching on a digital spectrum. In this essay, I will explain how a digital age versus a non-digital age is effecting everyone involved in a higher education.

Almost everyone attends a school at one time in their life whether the classroom includes technology or not. Research shows that technology isn’t used as often as one might think. The article, “High Access and Low use of technology in High School Classrooms” illustrates the use of technology by stating that only one in ten of elementary and middle school teachers are daily users of computers (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, Peck). Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. Although some people might agree with the use of technology in class, it is more harmful to the students than useful. It can cause many distractions, it can be difficult to use and can take away from learning time.

Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).
To begin with, before anyone can develop an opinion as to whether technology is a useful tool in the classroom, one needs to understand that technology plays an important role in today’s world. However, the use or over-use of technology in educating young children in teaching literacy to young children is a much debated theory. There are many opinions regarding the positive influence technology can have as a useful tool in the classroom, yet there are those, like myself, who also see the negative aspect of too much technology.
Technology has become an integral part of the 21st century. Now, more than ever, technology is used to accomplish things never imagined before. However, as more and more people are using it in many different aspects of their lives, technology is too often looked at for its negative effects on society. There has been a long debate over whether or not technology should be used in the classroom. A part of this debate includes the digital divide which is the divide of upper-class and lower-class schools regarding the amount of integration of technology in their school systems. Many say that technology serves as a greater distraction than as a useful device, but if used correctly, they can actually be used as tools to aid students. Portable technology, like tablets and iPads, make books, notes, and learning tools easily accessible. Tablets should be used in the classroom because they increase efficiency, create a more active learning environment, and allow students to be better prepared for future careers.
Additionally, teachers are creating "writing assignments online" that students post to, "passing out PDAs to use in scientific experiments", and allowing students to "practice foreign languages in electronic forums" (Source B). While all these new gadgets may be appealing to faulty, parents, and students, it is necessary to look at what affects this new technology will have on human interaction. By creating online assignments for students to post and comment on only hinders on the classroom discussion and may eventually cause these discussions to completely disappear. Therefore, it is important to consider the affects these devices will have on students in the future when considering whether or not implement it in
Technology properly used in the classroom has many advantages to a student’s learning. Technology can help students become more involved in their own learning process, which is not seen in the traditional classroom. It allows them to master basic skills at their own rate rather than being left behind. Teachers and students alike can connect to real life situations by using technology in the classroom; this can also help to prepare students for real world situations. Technology can be used to motivate students as well as to offer more challenging opportunities. It can also be used as a visualization tool to keep students interested in the subject that is being taught. When technology is used effectively, students have the opportunity to develop skills that they may not get without the use of technology (Cleaver, 2011). Assessing and monitoring students is easier on the teacher because of the ability to use technology in the classroom. When technology is used correctly it offers limitless resources to a classroom atmosphere.

Redd makes a good point stating that “Many of these mobile devices are characterized as miniature classroom computers that allow students to partake in the ‘anytime, anywhere’ learning movement” (30). Students today use all types of electronic devices to do the unimaginable. The internet is a portal for students to connect to everything around the world giving them instantaneous access to resources. Imagine going throughout a day without the aid of technology, it detracts the learning process and limits accessibility. Students find it easier to access coursework, “Some said they were reluctant to use mobile phone functions such as SMS texting and information downloads for course-related activities” (Moule 61). Technology is a crucial part of modern life. From advancements in medicine, infrastructure, transport, and communication; we as a collective society can attribute the comfort of our lives to technology. Technology ( and its various implementations in both develop and developing nations) allow us to connect like never before, creating a ripple effect wherein it is an assumed part of everyday life. The twenty-first century has arrived, and it has brought some of the most advanced computing technologies into the classroom; this leaves us with a very important question, do we really need technology, such as iPads or computers, implemented in our learning plans? As a student that has taken entire courses on iPads or computers, I can tell you that the former is not the case. There are plenty of reasons to teach about technological advances in each individual field of learning, but, more often than not, technology is unreliable and distracting for students. Not to mention that methods of maintenance rehearsal, like taking notes by hand, are more effective for recollection of information than staring into a screen. The bottom line is, using technology as a tool for education in the classroom is not necessary because it can inhibit the way students learn material.
Modern technology has made it so much easier to obtain educational information for classroom or homework assignments. It offers educational games that stimulate the brain and help children who have difficulties focusing on traditional teaching and learning procedures. College students are even taking advantage of online courses that many colleges are offering as an alternative to physically attending classes. Advances in technology and computers will continue to play an important role in education for many generations to come.
