Technology is a crucial part of modern life. From advancements in medicine, infrastructure, transport, and communication; we as a collective society can attribute the comfort of our lives to technology. Technology ( and its various implementations in both develop and developing nations) allow us to connect like never before, creating a ripple effect wherein it is an assumed part of everyday life. As a result of technology and its various uses being an essential element in our daily life, the modern day classroom has had to evolve with the times. The curriculum demands that schools should be integrating technology, especially digital technologies, into their lessons in as seamless a fashion as possible. However, does the prevalence of digital …show more content…
To begin with, the advantages of access to digital technologies in the classroom should be fully explored. Digital technologies are “ electronic tools, systems, devices and resources that generate, store, or process data. These include social media, online games and applications, multimedia, productivity applications, cloud computing, interoperable systems and mobile devices” Victoria Education Department 2015) The first advantage of introducing digital technologies to learners is that students become experienced in those technologies. By the end of year 12, students who have been in a class which integrated digital technologies should be extremely proficient in their skills. “ At this stage, it would be hoped that the students are digitally proficient, that they also have an aptitude that will help them when they encounter new and emerging technologies in the future.” ( Howell 2013 , pp 191) What this means is that students with access to a classroom which allowed them to develop their skills in …show more content…
Imagine a year nine geography class; a research question has been posed to them. Traditional classroom methods dictate that the students would be given either a textbook in which they will be able to find the answer, or the teacher adopts a more lecture style of learning. But, if the digital technologies have been implemented in the classroom then the students will be able to access a wide variety of different mediums to find the answer, using global content to ascertain an answer. The range of information and the interactiveness of sleuthing for the answer is a fun and interactive experience, in comparison to passively listening to the teacher. Traditional teaching methods should not be dismissed, but the inclusion of digital technologies into the classrooms adds additional layers to the learning experience. Technology usage in the classroom helps to overcome the idea of the “lecture style” of teaching. ( Boundless 2016)In regards to student engagement, ICT usage allows for teachers to teach creatively, due to the vast amount of resources available the duality of creative teaching and technology usage will be able to engage nearly all of the students in the classroom. By not having access to ICT in their lessons, students in the modern
In this text, the author explores the role that technology currently plays in schools and in education in general, as well as future consequences that will occur depending on whether society continues to insist on a type of education that is relatively lacking in technology or decides to embrace the options available whole-heartedly. There are both gains...
It is no more pertinent than today to acknowledge that students live in a technology driven world where information and communication technologies are integrated into everyday situations (QSA, 2007). Prensky, 2001 suggests that it is now clear that as a result of the abundant technological environment and students’ substantial level of interaction with it, that today’s students think and process information fundamentally differently from their predecessors. With this in mind, it is crucial that as a future educator, I bring to the classroom new and innovative ways of teaching and learning in order to motivate and interest these ‘digital natives’ (Halat, 2008).
Where ever you live and whatever grade you teach, technology has made it into the lives of teachers and students. Whether it is an ebook, laptop, iPad, computer, or Smartboard, they all have brought teaching literacy to a new level. These tools are not going to leave our classrooms, if anything they will impact the learning at new and higher levels. There will come a day, and I think it will be soon, that every student will have access to their own technology devices at school and at home. As teachers, we need to embrace technology and try and stay ahead of our students if possible.
Education is important, so it would only make sense that technology would have a huge part in it. When children are born, they are placed into a world that is driven by technology. Parents are now using iPads and cellphones to allow their children to get a head start on learning. Now, by the time children are of age to attend school, they are exceedingly prepared to incorporate technology in their education. With this being said, educational institutions must help students get ready to work in a society that encompasses an extensive amount of technology. According to Sean McCollum, “a handful of school districts…are adapting their use to serve the curriculum.” Many schools are now using whiteboards, laptops, tablets, Smartphones and other
Almost everyone attends a school at one time in their life whether the classroom includes technology or not. Research shows that technology isn’t used as often as one might think. The article, “High Access and Low use of technology in High School Classrooms” illustrates the use of technology by stating that only one in ten of elementary and middle school teachers are daily users of computers (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, Peck). Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. Although some people might agree with the use of technology in class, it is more harmful to the students than useful. It can cause many distractions, it can be difficult to use and can take away from learning time.
Do you ever think about how much technology has changed the way we work, learn, play, and even think? Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).
Technology forms the most vital element of life in the world today. Every aspect of our lives is dominated by technology and its importance in our lives is indispensable. One of the outstanding facts about technology use in schools is its controversial nature. There is no common agreement by stakeholders in technology and educations sectors about the use of technology in schools. There are two different factions, one supporting use of technology as a positive aspect, while the other faction disagrees, citing the detrimental effects of technology in students. However, the use of technology in classrooms catering for children continues to increase, as education develops more interesting ways of enhan...
Image a school with laptops available to each student to complete their class notes, teachers who are able to help their students through the screens of their computer, children who are excited to learn about numbers with the help of cute, animated characters. With the endless advancement of today’s technology, schools across the world have begun integrating various technology into their curriculum. These devices have the potential to greatly impact students in their learning. When a school opts to use technology in a school setting, the most important factors they should take into consideration are the benefits of using technological devices, the effectiveness of technology used
It is very hard not to realize that technology has overpowered education in many ways. “Technology integration is similar to a tidal wave, growing silently in strength, then falling with an unstoppable roar upon those who paid no attention or showed little interest” (Guhlin, 40). Nowadays, computers are almost considered a necessity in the classroom, and are the main component of technology integration. Computers are being used in more numerous ways, besides only being used for basic word processing. With a simple computer, copious availabilities of technologies can be used in the classroom. “The one thing that is so great about the computer is that it does give a lot of instruction--and you don't need to have hearing to take advantage of it” (Anderson, 12). It’s amazing how one simple screen can provide everlasting opportunity for learning.
Technology properly used in the classroom has many advantages to a student’s learning. Technology can help students become more involved in their own learning process, which is not seen in the traditional classroom. It allows them to master basic skills at their own rate rather than being left behind. Teachers and students alike can connect to real life situations by using technology in the classroom; this can also help to prepare students for real world situations. Technology can be used to motivate students as well as to offer more challenging opportunities. It can also be used as a visualization tool to keep students interested in the subject that is being taught. When technology is used effectively, students have the opportunity to develop skills that they may not get without the use of technology (Cleaver, 2011). Assessing and monitoring students is easier on the teacher because of the ability to use technology in the classroom. When technology is used correctly it offers limitless resources to a classroom atmosphere.
In conclusion, technology has changed education for the better allowing access to unlimited resources, distance learning and broadening the means of communication. Technology creates a more encouraging environment and stimulates students to engage in something they may be familiar with. Technology has allowed people to know more and to collaborate with each other. Students have a great range of technologies which strengthens the relationship between knowledge and students. The technology used today throughout the world will only strengthen and advance the 21st century education system. With unlimited resources, students can take advantage of their learning and gain the most from it. Integrating technology into education promotes a better learning community.
Active involvement in class discussions and incorporating technology are techniques that could be used when trying to engage student’s interests. Interactive based learning provides an opportunity to become actively involved in the discussion instead of just listening to an instructor throw huge amounts of information their way. Using technology is a way for students to become active in their learning. Tools such as interactive white boards enable children to engage in classroom games, view websites, and review problems step by step. As technology is advancing students rely on teachers integrating technology into their lessons more frequently. In traditional lectures the teacher gives a large quantity of material, but if the student is not paying attention, does learning occur? By incorporating learner response devices where students can electronic...
Students do things like write papers, access test and quizzes, and even visit their teacher’s web page where they find information needed for the course. This may seem easy to students who have always had internet in their home with a computer they can work on, but what about the students who have no idea what the internet is, or don’t own a computer or device they can to practice on. This is one of the key reason digital literacy is important. Students no matter the age or background should feel comfortable using the internet at school. They should always feel caught up in classes because if they don’t know how to it will be taught to them. Schools should make sure students are up to speed and no child is left
Whether technological integration has positive or negative impacts on teaching and learning has been paid increasing attention and a numerous research has done to explore the issue. Regarding the issue, the question of if training teachers in the use of technology in classrooms contributes to students’ outcomes is still an endless argument. This essay will explain two reasons why such training brings about positive academic achievements for learners and a number of training guidelines that can be followed.
students prefer technology because they believe that it makes learning more interesting and fun. They especially like laptops and tablets. Subjects that students deem challenging or boring can become more interesting with virtual lessons, through a video, or when using a tablet. Technology occupies an important place within students’ lives. When they are not in school, just about everything that they do is connected in some way to technology. By integrating technology into the classroom, teachers are changing the way they used to teach (lectures six hours a day) and providing students with the tools that will take them into the 21st century. One of the characteristics of the modern classroom is collaboration and technology helps to empower it. With classroom technology students can collaborate with other students and their teachers in and outside of the classroom quickly and easily.
