Technology in the Classroom Technology has become an integral part of the 21st century. Now, more than ever, technology is used to accomplish things never imagined before. However, as more and more people are using it in many different aspects of their lives, technology is too often looked at for its negative effects on society. There has been a long debate over whether or not technology should be used in the classroom. A part of this debate includes the digital divide which is the divide of upper-class and lower-class schools regarding the amount of integration of technology in their school systems. Many say that technology serves as a greater distraction than as a useful device, but if used correctly, they can actually be used as tools to aid students. Portable technology, like tablets and iPads, make books, notes, and learning tools easily accessible. Tablets should be used in the classroom because they increase efficiency, create a more active learning environment, and allow students to be better prepared for future careers.

While admitting the power of technology, he also points out the adverse effects of excessive use of technology in the education system. He states, “Computers make our worst educational nightmare come true” (279). According to him, improper or overuse of computers hinders learning ability. Whether we like it or not, the world is beginning to become overrun with technology. Even the simplest things, like sinks and hand dryers in bathrooms are adapting to this growth in technology, the impact of technology even reaches all the way into our learning environment. Sure, technology might have some very good upsides to it but that doesn't change the fact that it creates distraction, takes away learning time, and can provide opportunities for students to cheat. It's crazy to think how huge of an impact technology really has on us, not only outside of school but inside as well.
Do you ever think about how much technology has changed the way we work, learn, play, and even think? Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).
Technology is a recent development that has been widely used in many fields to enhance productivity and output. For instance, it has been incorporated in the education sector to allow easier access to information. Mostly, technology in education has taken the form of using computers and related accessories like software to enhance the learning capacity, information access, and development of students’ learning capabilities. In essence, extensive use of technology in classrooms has reduced the workload of tutors while enhancing the overall performance of students through employment of various programs aimed at developing the learning of students. As the years move on, the negative effects have begun to outnumber the positive. As more people began to access the Internet through smart phones and tablets rather than laptops and computers, it is not a surprise that they would also want to transform the American education system by bringing tablets into classrooms. In fact, a few schools around the country have already replaced textbooks with tablets and have seen improvements in students’ standardized test scores. Using tablets instead of textbooks is not only convenient and helpful, but it can also reduce the amount of paper wastes in school. However, it is not a good idea to completely transform textbooks with tablets with the current technology, for it can not only be damaging to the environment and costly to set up, but also might not be effective in improving K-12 education in the long run.
Teachers who support technology believe it offers much more to their students’ education by implementing a much clearer picture of what they are learning--rather than textbooks which only provide information and elemental review questions. Technology allows students to apply themselves more in school, but teachers throughout the country fear computers/tablets are distracting their students more than anything. While technology offers a fast and efficient way to learning techniques and study tools, students are decreasing their effort in class because the answers to a worksheet are only a couple ‘clicks’ away. Everything they need to know is at the very tip of their fingers. Lawler, an English teacher that teaches at New Trier High School, stresses that his students are processing more than they are actually learning when they use computers.

In order to improve the educational system in India, measures need to be taken that track each student and provide a customized learning experience. In developing countries, factors such as low student and teacher attendance, instructors teaching to the top of the class, and different family backgrounds cause the education systems to fail to positively impact all students. Two potential solutions to these problems are to track students’ individual progress and to provide customized learning plans that cater to the needs of each student. By using computers in the classroom, teachers will be better equipped to track and teach to the level of each student and therefore benefit all students in the class.
