First, there is a group called Leadership 2020. The goal of this team is to vision what the possibilities are in the health care industry and through brainstorming, data analysis, and trending determine what AHC should look like and be like regarding culture, product, service, etc. in 2020. This is activity is very much a conventional way of strategic planning as the leaders look internally and externally, determine strategy for the next 3 -5 years that will help the organization accomplish its vision and mission (McNamara, n.d.). The other strategic planning model is Alignment. The alignment model of strategic planning seeks to align all business segments with the achievement of the organizational goals (McNamara, n.d.). When reviewing AHC’s strategic plan it was obvious that all business segment line leaders aligned on the overarching goal of “Strategies enclosed support that AHC is a Not-For-Profit, Full Service, Health System Owned, Non Acute Provider Dedicated to Integrated Population Health that produces a Total Return on Investment for its Member Health Systems. WellStar Health Systems is currently the preeminent and largest health care provider in Metro Atlanta. WellStar Health Systems is a not-for-profit institution that is composed of 5 hospitals and an abundance of physician groups. Physician specialty groups included within WellStar are: ENT, Psychiatry, Endocrinology, Pulmonary Medicine, Infectious Disease, General Surgery, Rehabilitation, Pathology, and Rheumatology. WellStar’s organizational design is composed of internal and external factors that define the organization’s size, organizational structure, and processes. This internal analysis of Sunshine Generations Nursing Home will depict Nursing Home’s uniqueness in the market and its ability to remain competitive while still providing exceptional care to its residents.
According to Bolman and Deal, structure “is a blueprint for formally sanctioned expectations and exchanges among internal players and external constituencies.” (Bolman, 2013, p.46) When a structure is inadequate, difficulties result both between the internal players and the external constituencies. However, it is not as important to find the perfect structure, as it is to “putting people in the right roles and relationships” within the structure chosen. (Bolman, 2013, p. 45) When this happens, the structure will allow people to do their job well. The goal in my issue is to give safe and quality care to any mental health (MH) patient in our Emergency Department (ED). I have identified the following structural elements in my organization that are either driving forces or restraining forces toward this goal.
When it comes to operating nursing home facilities, there are many stakeholders involved depending on whether the institution is for-profit, non-profit or government owned. Majority of nursing homes are for-profit organization and they account for almost 70 percent of nursing homes, while non-profit nursing homes account for less than 30 percent and less 6 percent are government owned (Nursing home data Compendium, 2015). Nearly 95.5 percent of nursing homes across the state are dually certified, meaning they have both Medicare and Medicaid certifications (Center for Medicare and Medicaid, 2015). Nursing home funding comes from four different sectors. Nearly fifty percent of their revenue come from Medicaid, followed by Medicare which counts for twenty percent, and the rest of payments come from a mixture of private-long-term care insurance and out of pocket (Yoder, 2012).
As a nursing home model, Green Houses are obviously providers of long-term care services, including basic nursing and medical services. As individuals, we tend to hope for the better but that is just hope. Reality could bring unpredictable situations at any given time. When I wake up in the morning, I have no idea of what could surface in my healthcare. I can be doing great today and be on the verge of a healthcare crisis the next. A strategic plan is a tool that delivers guidance in achieving a mission or goal with maximum proficiency and control for an organization. Strategic planning is used to transform and revitalize organizations. The plan helps provide an inclusive understanding of opportunities and challenges both internally and externally for the organization. The plan delivers an assessment of the strengths and limitations that are realistic within the company. A well-developed strategic plan will offer a comprehensive approach and empowerment for the stakeholders involved. It is an opportunity for learning and understanding priorities that will drive the business to succeed. Jones (2010), describes how in health care organizations, strategic plans characteristically concentrate on operational and organizational goals such as when to obtain new technology, how to meet competitive challenges, and what staffing, tools, or facilities are needed to ensure organizational survival. The mission and value statements are significant in determining the quality of a strategic initiative. Forcing the organization to look toward the future creates proactive objectives in which both short-term and long-terms plans and goals are necessary in order to succeed.
Support of a decentralized organizational philosophy can transform organizations, staff, and patients because it affects the culture, improves staff outlook, promotes personal involvement and encourages staff to reach higher levels of quality care. In my organization, nursing leaders should strive to involve all patient care units and staff in shared governance, educate unit leadership council chairs, and build on the positive aspects by empowering, motivating and developing staff members. These actions will increase creativity, responsibility, intellectual stimulation, and well-being.
In order for a healthcare organization to achieve prosperity it must be connecting itself to its strategy over time for long term success. It must understand its strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities within which the organization exists. It is important to say that this comprehension is a critical ingredient when planning for successful processes. The prescription for success in health care is no different than for any other highly dynamic, competitive industry. But “Cleveland Clinic has added something else to become a fast-growing, $6.5-billion non-profit health-care giant -- an eye for entrepreneurship, pushed by President and CEO Delos M. "Toby" Cosgrove, M.D., in the decade since taking its helm” (Parsons, 2015, p.32-34).
Both home care and caregivers play a crucial role in the health care of older adults. With an aging population and the potential of soaring healthcare costs, home care and caregivers provide effective and efficient lower-cost care. For instance, home care helps to resolve issues that the Canadian health care system is facing, including long wait lines for placements and procedures, misuse of hospital beds and shortages of long-term care beds. Further, research continues to demonstrate that when home care is properly managed and integrated into the health care system, the health and wellbeing of many seniors and their families are improved, resulting in fewer hospitalizations or stay in long-term care institutions. In this paper, I will try to discuss and talk about three ideas which can be implemented in nursing homes. I will do my best explaining why it is important to healthcare administration, and why should it be implemented in nursing homes or any other healthcare facilities.
