To me, the three most important things for a student to be academically successful are participation, comprehension, and application. A student must be an active participant in their tutoring sessions. This means being focused, asking questions, and demonstrating a willingness to learn. A tutor's role in a student's academic success is to assist the student in comprehending the material in question during a session. Tutors should work hard to make sure they understand the material, so they can effectively teach and explain concepts to students during sessions. When a tutor is able to help a student comprehend a topic, a student can then move on to applying their new knowledge during class. Through successfully applying knowledge during class, a student will get the outcome they hoped for by attending tutoring: An improvement in grades, and a deeper knowledge base for subjects they attend tutoring for. A tutor should listen to the students and make sure they understand what topics are being asked about. Tutors should be able to explain concepts in a fresh and exciting manner, in order to raise a student's level of engagement in the subject. Fostering a positive learning environment should be the goal of a tutor every time a session is scheduled. This means making sure every question has a correct answer, and making sure the students come away with a better understanding of the subject material than they came in with. If a tutor is running a group session, they should seek to help students learn from each other as well. Sometimes, one student may have the answer to the question of another student, so promoting an open and collaborative environment should be another goal for tutors. Overall, a tutor should seek to be an academic resource that helps a struggling student become a successful
My experiences with tutoring others has taught me that it satisfies me to help others understand and learn. As you teach others you learn about the different ways you handle situations and solve issues as well. I’ve always been the person that my classmates come up to for help, but it wasn’t till grade 10 until I officially started tutoring math, mainly Pre-Calculus 12. In grade 11, I continued tutoring, but this time I focused on a single individual, and that brought up challenges of creating a suitable relationship, that becomes the foundation for effective learning. This year, I took on a challenge, my teacher asked me to be a mentor towards a student with learning disabilities who was struggling with school. I
Peer tutors are put in leadership positions that oftentimes prepares them for life after their educational experience. Additionally, peer tutors lead their tutees to utilize cognitive thinking skills. Finally, peer tutors assist tutees in development (pg. 4). Lipsky cited Arthur Chickering’s seven vectors of development (pg. 4). Each vector highlights areas of effective social, intellectual or personal development (pg. 4-5). She stated, “As a framework explaining college students’ evolving behaviors and attitudes, Chickering’s model is useful in your peer educator role. Note that the seven vectors overlap and are not linear in nature” (pg. 4).
Teachers should try to make the class as interesting as possible. If the students are interested in learning they will try harder and learn better. Teachers should be a positive influence on their student’s lives. They should not only teach them the basic subjects, but also try to make them become better people by being involved with them. Some parents don’t care how their children act and don’t try to help them overcome problems such as shyness; therefore it is left up to the teacher to help these students. This is where the teacher should become a friend and role model for the students.
It is the tutor’s responsibility to ensure that learners feel comfortable in the learning environment and that they understand the importance of numeracy as a life and work skill and feel motivated and confident in their own abilities to use it. It is tutor’s responsibility to support the learner to achieve the goals they set on their ILP and to inspire them to achieve their full potential. It is the tutor’s role to prepare the learner with the skills needed for a successful life.
The learning resource center assists students who have academic problems by providing tutor. Students are able to ask problems that they do not know during arranged tutor time. For example,
...cle was involved with her class. It makes the learning process fun and exciting for the students. The teachers make all the difference in the world. A student can learn memorize anything that a teacher lectures on. But the information is only stored temporally. If you make it fun and exciting the student not only learns but the memory lasts a life time.
Teaching means more than just giving students information about a subject. Teaching is about building relationships, and finding ways to support students in their pursuit for learning. Support can be both in the classroom (or the setting where the learning takes place), and outside of this realm. I have gained skills pertinent to support and relationship building throughout my experiences as a resident assistant, peer advisor and a peer tutor.
Doing that involves an increasing mastery of skills, knowledge, and ideas." (Robinson, p. 119) The mentioned idea can be used to motivate students to participate in the learning process. The same way young children learn playing with others, the older child can do it experimenting and prove their theories. As a teacher is easy to noticed the difference between a lesson that is pure theory, and the lesson that incorporates creative factors. Students present a better behavior during the lesson, participate, interact, formulate questions and get the answers working together without
These qualities are extremely significant because the quality that the tutee receives is the most important. Tolerance and patience are among my many qualities, which can help me deal with kids when they fail to understand a concept. In addition, I am kind and understanding towards other kids. By containing these qualities, the students would actually look forward to learning new things. Furthermore, I am an extremely encouraging tutor. Being encouraging is the most important quality that a tutor should possess. If a tutor is encouraging, the student will develop a motivation to succeed, and a tutor’s joy is to see their tutee prevail. Accordingly, containing this quality can also help me become a better leader and become more selfless. Consequently, I would be a magnificent candidate to participate in the Rocky Run Homework Helpers Program, due to the fact that I am eager to tutor, and I contain The abilities to complete the
One of the benefits of peer tutoring is that it increases communication and social skills. The tutee will feel more comfortable learning, listening, and interchanging knowledge with a peer. Working with peers can also feel easier because they will most likely understand the position they are in at school and home. Benjamin Stoddard, author of the article "What is Peer to Peer Tutoring?" writes that "A peer tutor can form examples and relate to a student on an entirely different level than an adult educator". Most of the time this is not because of the adult, but caused by the students' diverse ways to learn the information. Communication is a useful skill that one can benefit from for many years with working in groups, with teachers, in jobs, and in life. The article "Communication Skills" sums up that communication skills are the skills you need to achieve a goal. This article also explains ...
...he school only has one perspective on the needs of a student at any given time. However, by collaborating with others at the school, they can pool their resources together in order to create a better learning experience for the student. Because of this, it is important for a teacher to maintain open relationships with everyone else at the school.
Education is a very important aspect of our lives. It is our education that makes us who we are and determines what we become. Therefore, education is not something to be taken lightly. As a teacher, my goal will be to provide the best possible education for my students. Every student is unique. I must see students for who they are individually and respect their ideas and opinions. Each student has a different learning style. I must take this into consideration because I want to provide a constructive learning opportunity for every student. I believe that every student has the potential to learn.
Discussion, the active learner participates in peer discussion and any other assignment. This will help problem solving, experimentation, synthesis and other evaluation of contents.
Usually, I tutor students who are in grades 3-5 and are struggling on some sort of math or science concepts. One of the most important parts of working with kids is patience. It is impossible to be a good tutor if one gets frustrated easily or annoyed by the fact that a child may ask multiple questions. Furthermore, one must always be willing to answer questions, even if they may not seem relevant. With continued practice and experience in tutoring, a person is able to refine and learn new life skills.
