As Confucius once said, “He who wishes to secure the good of others, has already secured his own”. Society today is filled with chaos and beliefs that reflect the lost sense of humanity and compassion. Most strive to achieve a position in life, disregarding the value of giving back to others. Because of this, a large section if the population endures problems that they should never know, such as starvation, thirst, and homelessness. Service helps people understand how their actions have an impact on society, explore the passions that drive their actions, and aid them in obtaining new valuable life-skills. Service achieves a two-way iwn by both giving back to society and aiding a person to discover who he/she is as a person. One of the most …show more content…
In my school, when a student wants to submit volunteer hours, there is a questionnaire that he/she must answer. One of the first questions asked is, ”What skills has this activity taught you?” Every Saturday, I volunteer in a program known as GIVE. GIVE is a non-profit organization designed to aid students in K-6 who need help in certain subjects; it is a perfect resource for parents because it is completely free. Usually, I tutor students who are in grades 3-5 and are struggling on some sort of math or science concepts. One of the most important parts of working with kids is patience. It is impossible to be a good tutor if one gets frustrated easily or annoyed by the fact that a child may ask multiple questions. Furthermore, one must always be willing to answer questions, even if they may not seem relevant. With continued practice and experience in tutoring, a person is able to refine and learn new life skills. Since I have been a part of this program for multiple years, some of the skills that this service has taught me are patience, compassion, compromise. The skills that I obtained from this activity, will prove immensely useful in the future when a job may be frustrating or a problem arises. Service can indeed bring out the best in a
Growing up, my parents and other influential figures around me modelled the importance of community service through their continual volunteer work and dedication to improving the world around them. Whether it be participation in a well-attended project or persistent contribution to a helpful organization, those aforementioned individuals were formative in guiding me towards a path filled with opportunities for having an impact on my community.
important issues, gain new perspectives and provides learning experiences for volunteers as well as individuals from underserved groups. Because of the numerous benefits, college students should enroll in the Service Learning courses or service learning based programs. These programs allows students to move away from the dualism versus unity point of view and focus on reciprocity and provides the skills necessary to approach future service experiences with a service learning perspective.
There remains this experience in my mind that I need to write about that actually inspired me in countless behaviors in reference to service and self. I consider relationships concerning those in the helping field and those obtaining aid stands as particularly vital; hence, I believe I must direct focus on this concept. I resolved to enter this discipline because I wanted to give back to those in the community in need. One day I was speaking with a counselor at Centaur who happened to tell me about the significance of connecting to clients, and she expressed to me that I should pay homage to those who accept the “gift” of service because without them, we would not possess the zeal to accomplish authentic behaviors approaching community service. I realized these were true words of wisdom because when I thought about it, I realized my actions were not just about those that I helped but how I helped myself. Thus, in my opinion, these connections were essentially interactions that were in effect a “gift” that could be passed on. I am not just here to help and individual, I am here to create notable connections that would present the motivation to others to also aid those in need and bolster the
There were several connections made between my service learning experiences and themes addressed in class. Some of the connections were about human dignity, solidarity, subsidiarity and equity. My service learning took place in a nursing home and the applicability of human dignity became abundantly clear. Teachings of solidarity and equity were directly exemplified. Social ties hold people together and are able to support the people who don’t have the power to help themselves. Subsidiarity is also a relevant issue; decisions for helping the elderly is best when done on the lowest level—the people who directly work with the elderly and know what troubles faces them.
People need to contribute time to important causes like community service, and volunteer work. On a few occasions, I volunteered at a food pantry, and it was a very humble, and valuable experience for me, an experience I will never forget. It was heart breaking to see all the people in need that are lacking the most essential things in life, like food. There were people waiting in line for about two hours before we even opened the door, just to obtain a number. I could hear people talking in line, while I was packaging the canned goods, and perishables. When the other volunteers opened the door, and started calling out numbers, then we proceeded to hand them their bag of food, they had this forever grateful look in their eyes. It was like the gratitude in their eyes pierced, and warmed my heart at the same time. It was a bitter sweet moment, and to hear it over, and over, was overwhelming. And on the other hand, there are other people in America, that the stress of their day is trying to choose the latest model IPHONE, or automobi...

"My immediate goal is to gain admission to the College of Law. I know that I will be able to receive a top-notch education that will allow me to fulfill my potential as a contributing member of society.
There are always some activities for the betterment of a community. If we get involved ourselves in those, we will certainly have some useful experiences in our life too. Service Learning is one of those activities, and it is primarily a service of a community with the application of the knowledge and guidance obtained in the college. Moreover, Service Learning is a way for a student to practice the education that he learns from the college, which in result strengthens the student academically. As a result, A student can be aware of the social issues through Service Learning, and he can apply his ideas and knowledge to come up with a solution. Similarly, Service learning also provides a source of communicating with the professional of the community, which can be helpful for a student regarding the education and employment. There are many organizations in our society, which create the opportunity for Service Learning. The ones that I am most interested in are the American Red Cross and City House homeless shelter. I like these organizations because these both are doing wonderful job b...
If we open our lives and give service to those less fortunate than ourselves, we allow our hearts to receive immeasurable happiness. When we sacrifice our time to help someone in need, whether it is a great or small need, we become a part of their life and can help alleviate heavy burdens. Making time to help people in need creates opportunities for us to develop new and lasting relationships. Serving our fellowmen allows the best in each of us to shine through and we can become examples to our children.
Volunteering enables a person to develop new skills that he or she would otherwise not have been able to develop. Unlike most other organizations, a charitable organization is happy to give positions to passionate, though inexperienced, individuals who desire to help others and benefit the community. Therefore, an individual with little experience in a field of work can gain meaningful skills that he or she can use in the future. For example, while I volunteered at the hospital this summer, I learned about the daily work lives and professional duties of doctors and nurses. Had I not volunteered, I would not have learned about these things. I was always interested in the medical field, but volunteering at the hospital let me explore my interests and en...
My plan after college is to become a Sociologist or a Social Worker. With a college degree in one of these areas, I hope to impact my community in various ways. First, with the knowledge obtained from college, I hope to counsel with young people who are on the verge of going astray. In today's society, there are so many negative factors that influence young people. I want to help them understand the importance of setting goals and striving to become productive citizens. I also want to give them a sense of hope that with perseverance, they can become great role models for other young people.

I need to be put to the test and learn how to work through issues I may confront. As a future accountant, I need to prove to myself that I have what it takes to be prepared for work in a fast paced environment. One day I want to be able to successfully hold positions or offices of responsibility. To be able to conduct business effectively and efficiently, and demonstrate reliability and dependability. Over the years I have grown extremely passionate about my career choice and so becoming a well-rounded individual before entering the field is a huge responsibility for me. In addition, a great asset to have in any field is the ability to communicate and network. Knowing that Service Corps will expose to me to a socioeconomic and ethnic/racial diversity, my connections and understanding of people's’ religion and culture will be greatly
Volunteering benefits a person by building connections with peers, improving family life, expanding career skills, overcoming self doubt, having lasting life impressions, and creating new opportunities. Just a small act can make a huge difference in someone’s life. The future is dependent on the individual person and the people they surround themselves with. Just a few hours will change both the volunteer’s life and the one that is in need.
Community service has now grown to be a way of bringing a community together. There is something important about doing good for others. Every community wants the people within it to be disciplined and work for change. Community service becomes easily assessable for it is the one of the best ways to teach a sense concern and sympathy to other individuals. Participating in community service, allows children and adolescents to become aware of good values and morals. Implemented values such as humility, gratitude, trustworthiness, genuineness and respect are some of the most vital virtues that one can obtain from helping the community. The importance of community service ultimately relies on how the provider distinguishes it. The more time individuals give doing community labor, the more
