During my Professional Seminar II and Field Experience I observed in Mary Doe’s 4th grade classroom. During this observation I witnessed the effects of a learning environment that was designed by the students for the students.
I was exposed to a classroom that was very diverse and learned the importance of teaching for learner differences. Not are students are the same and when the needs of a classroom are not being met the students can quickly become frustrated and deterred from learning. When the student’s needs are being met they are able to interact with their peers without the frustration and with guidance can maintain a safe learning environment.
Students are social by nature and given the right instructional strategies and good classroom management teachers can promote a positive learning environment. The use of instructional strategies will be different from class to class due the diversity within the student population. De Jesus (2012) continues to say that everyone is distinct. Every learner varies in background knowledge, cultural, social, and cognitive development. Some are more visual learners, while others learn better by listening, yet others will remember and record data easier through hands on experience such as creating projects. Therefore, this information should alert instructors that change is inevitable. Necessary modifications in the classroom must be made in order to accommodate everyone’s needs and prevent repetitive scenarios such as the one depicted above.

In my twelve years of teaching experience, one thing that most of my colleagues have struggled with at some point in their career has been classroom management. Classroom management is one many keys to instructional success. Unfortunately, many have left the teaching field due to lack of knowledge of classroom management best practices.
My personal philosophy of classroom management focuses on creating an environment where children feel safe and where they feel like they belong. I will create this environment for my fourth grade class through making my expectations of the students clear while developing an engaging lesson plan and personable interactions with my students. I developed my philosophy from studying different theorists and based my philosophy on the theories of Glasser and Kounin. Glasser believed that the teacher’s roll in the classroom is that of a leader rather than a boss. He believed that students should be given power in the classroom and that the teacher should share it with the students. I will use his ‘7 caring habits’ specifically supporting and respecting to help my classroom feel safe and welcoming to my students. Meeting the individual needs of my students will be the focus of my classroom management routine. I will meet individual needs by promoting self management and self efficacy in my students by creating an environment that that has predictable and consistent daily routines while focusing on my student’s successes (Shindler, 2010). Having a predictable routine will encourage a success oriented environment and will reduce anxiety and help towards creating positive self efficacy in each of my students (Shindler, 2010). In Glasser’s Choice Theory he talks about focusing on the present and not bringing up the past (Glasser, 2010). Therefore, I will focus my classroom on being goal driven and will help each student obtain their goals. Thus, helping my students have positive self efficacy. middle of paper ... ... Several teachers do not know how to receive the support they need. Diversity in classrooms is both positive and negative. However, if teachers are provided with the right resources and keep an open mind, their students can become successful civil human beings.

All effective educators need to find ways to motivate their students. The kids that fill our classrooms have different strengths and weaknesses. It is critical that teachers recognize the strengths and weaknesses of their students so they can use the right classroom management strategies to motivate their kids. In this particular case, the student named Jodie is inattentive and uninterested and neither the teacher intern or classroom teacher have a clue how to handle this situation. Ms. Marcia Thomas, who is the young intern feels that Jodie is just a problem child that lacks motivation and there is nothing she can do for this particular student. Ms. Thomas and the lead teacher Ms. Egan both lack the needed classroom management strategies that are necessary to motivate and engage students in a positive learning environment.
I can say I have not seen them in my classroom. I have called his mother, but was only able to get so far with her because she only speaks Spanish. I think he might have some literacy problems. After reading some of his work, I am assuming he has some self-efficacy issues with his ability to read and write.
Philosophical Statement and classroom management model I am committed to ensuring that I provide a classroom environment that is safe and supportive, as well as interesting and rewarding for my students by interpreting the curriculum in a way that meets the individual needs of the students, and is suited to their individual learning styles. In my classroom, there would be a few different expectations anticipated from students. They would be simple expectations that any teacher would have, since they are so simple that everyone already knows them. The expectations would be to always try your best, actively participate, follow the class rules, respect other, come prepared to class, and complete assignments by their due date. For my students’ expectations of me, that would be up to each class and I would discuss what they expect from me during the first week of school.
