Different types of habits are one of the main components in sculpting and defining an individual’s character. Through one’s habits, others have the capability of grasping more of who the person really is and what he or she is really like. In our world today, many individuals strive to become highly successful and effective in their own societies. With that, they must work towards shaping themselves by acquiring certain qualities and characteristics.
Proactivity is an essential component that greatly influences the decisions us as individuals make in life. Being proactive is defined as a habit where one must take initiative and become responsible. Proactive people have the proclivity to choose their responses and actions despite their surroundings. They are generally very optimistic and driven to make things happen. This type of habit eventually leads to a result that the person is satisfied with. Covey suggests that the people who end up having good professions are the ones that are proactive. These people take the initiative to do whatever they can in order to successfully get the job done. As for me, during my senior year of high school, the class of 2011 suffered so much academically as the country grew to become unstable due to violent protesting. This resulted in not having school for weeks due to the severity and the seriousness of the situation. Unfortunately, the IB examinations were only months away and students had to be prepared. Despite the instability of my surroundings, I started to take full initiative and responsibility in my studies by seeking alternative ways of help in order to earn the diploma that I have been diligently working for.

To recapitulate, Covey suggests that there is a particular set of habits that individuals must develop throughout their lifetime in order to become highly effective people. Being proactive, putting first things first, seeking first to understand, then to be understood, synergizing, and sharpening the saw are five of the seven fundamental habits that Covey discusses in his book. I chose these five habits as I found them to have played a significant role in my past experiences. Hopefully, I will be able to incorporate them in the future whether in work or with people around me. After reading through this intriguing and informative book, I learned that with each habit comes something crucial. These valuable habits will hopefully help shape me into an effective person in the future.
Whether they are positive or negative, our habits are an integral part of our lives. Because of this, when Professor James VanderMey addressed the 33rd annual Honors Convocation at Mid Michigan Community College, he decided to speak on the topic of habit. In his speech, entitled “Remarks on Habit,” VanderMey (argues against Sartre’s point of view by) discusses the advantages of having good habits, especially the habits represented by the Diploma Qualification Profile, a series of proficiencies that students learn as they are educated at Mid Michigan Community College. First, he shows that good habits lead to creative problem solving. Then, he argues that our habits make us who we are. Finally, he shows how good habits may grow and multiply. Habits, especially DQP habits, are positive and useful, because they allow one to think creatively, become a better person, and find innovative ways of doing.
Broadly speaking, habitus is the structural internalizing of our social worlds into tastes, dispositions, and characteristics, dependent on our status (Bourdieu 1994:473). St. Pauls equips their students with notions of habitus of the elite through an
Habits are choices that one continues to do repeatedly without actually thinking about them. Habits start with a decision, but they eventually become automatic. One can probably think about things we do every day that we wish we did less of, perhaps like binging Netflix, constantly checking social media, or snacking when not being hungry. If one can understand how habits are triggered, one can learn how to overcome them. The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg and “Rat Park” by Lauren Slater will reveal the main strategies to recognize and overcome habits. In conclusion, Jobs used the first two habits, be proactive and begin with the end in mind, and became successful. The quote above demonstrates how many different factors all input into the person that we become. A person’s habitus is all of those factors within them. Not only does the habitus concern a person’s behaviour and morals, the habitus also affects the choices a person makes about their body. “Through the habitus, society is impressed on the individual, not only in mental habits, but even more in corporeal ones.” (Hanks, 2005) The habitus is formed from the collective structure of the group the individual is part of, such as social class sub-groups. It is also formed from the individual experiences that the person goes through.
Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny”.
The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People is a book written by Stephen Covey. In the book he writes about seven habits that highly effective people have. The seven habits of highly effective people are: be proactive, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, think win-win, seek first to understand then to be understood, synergize, and sharpen the saw.
The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (Covey, 2004) has become the cornerstone of leadership and management wisdom. The habits emphasize personal responsibility and personal leadership. There is challenge in living everyday under the guidance of the habits but there is also great benefit as living the habits can influence everything we do in life. I was introduced to Covey’s seven habits through a one day seminar at my workplace several years ago. I learned some of the terminology and a few of the concepts but never really understood the power of the practical application of the habits. Reading the Covey materials has taught me that life is not about all the tasks that I accomplish but instead about accomplishing the tasks that support what is important to me. Covey has taught me that there are elemental components that are applicable across the many roles that I have in my life. Those universal elements are integrity, vision, discipline, and passion. Embracing these ideas has opened my eyes to the endless applications and benefits of living the seven habits.

According to Career Quotes (n.d.), “What is the recipe for successful achievement? To my mind there are just four essential ingredients: Choose a career you love, give it the best there is in you, seize your opportunities, and be a member of the team” (Career Quotes, n.d.). In this paper I talked about the following questions: how do you use critical thinking in decision making and problem solving in your professional life?, what are the three most important elements of personal and professional etiquette that you employ in your professional life?, what are your strengths and weaknesses in your professional life?, and what strategies do you employ to stay on-task and on-time in your professional
