Rising early, drinking coffee in the morning, using bad language it’s all our habits. Today we are doing to talk about habits in education and how the effect out study process. According to Webster’s New World Dictionary,’’ Habit is a thing done often and hence usually, done easily. It is a pattern of actions that become so automatic that it is difficult to break. Nowadays, most schools of today 's society often provide students with poor study skills, which preventing them to earn desirable development in education. The major concept of studying is education, so if the problem continues to accrue, students will be having no opportunities to develop their knowledge, to get a degree, and as a result receive a high-paying job in the future. Duhigg has transformed our understanding of habit’s power; he focuses on three-step loop, cue, routine, and reward. We can divide habit in two categories good and bad. Each student has a set of routine or habits that he has to do. It is very important to find the good habits from bad once. Habits that needed in becoming a good student includes study always, hardworking, reading books and waking up early, come to class on time, do homework and assignments, and as a reward get good grades. Same as in daily life habits in education are can never truly be broken, but if you can recognize the cues and change rewards to produce new routines, wrong habits can be replaced with better habits. Sure we highly depend on our habits, but we still have a choice which habits fill up
Whether they are positive or negative, our habits are an integral part of our lives. Because of this, when Professor James VanderMey addressed the 33rd annual Honors Convocation at Mid Michigan Community College, he decided to speak on the topic of habit. In his speech, entitled “Remarks on Habit,” VanderMey (argues against Sartre’s point of view by) discusses the advantages of having good habits, especially the habits represented by the Diploma Qualification Profile, a series of proficiencies that students learn as they are educated at Mid Michigan Community College. First, he shows that good habits lead to creative problem solving. Then, he argues that our habits make us who we are. Finally, he shows how good habits may grow and multiply. Habits, especially DQP habits, are positive and useful, because they allow one to think creatively, become a better person, and find innovative ways of doing.
Charles Duhigg’s The Power of Habit, acknowledges how habits control our daily lives in every decision we make. For Instance, an ambitious woman named Lisa Allen, has not always had a fruitful life. Previously, she had abused her body with harmful toxins such as tobacco and alcohol since the beginning of her teenage years. Carrying out these habits everyday resulted her into being unmotivated and unconfident. In fact, she never kept a job longer than a year and began to fall into major debt. “She needed a goal in her life, she thought. Something to work toward” (xii-xiv). It begins with the “three-step loop” a cue that triggers our brain to do the habit. Next a routine, a set of actions that are either physical or mental. Finally a reward of satisfaction that determines whether or not this habit will be continuous (19). Not all habits can be good, but this is where the golden rule applies. Duhigg explains that in order for you to change your habit “ you must keep the old cue, and deliver the old reward, but insert a new routine”(62). “However, simply understanding how habits work- learning the structure of the habit loop makes them easier to control”( 20). Reading The Power of Habit, helped me understand the process by which I made a positive change to fight procrastination.
In Psychology there are many different learning styles. One of the more famous learning styles is operant conditioning. In operant conditioning there are two major concepts; reinforcement and punishment. By using these two concepts, behaviors can be encouraged or reduce a certain behavior. Next would be the different schedules of reinforcement that effect how often a behavior is likely to continue. Lastly the article goes on to state how behaviors can be shaped using these and other various methods.
There are many bad habits these days and the most serious one for me is stay up late all the time and not energetic enough in the morning. This behavior is called sleep procrastination. As the numbers of college graduates employment have increased for each years, many people have being debating that whether everyone should have college education and whether college education still worth it for everyone. Some people found that they did not gain the benefits that they wish from college education, and some people found that they still could not find the job they desire after they spent all the money they have on college education and being in heavy debts. The idea of intellectual excellence and excellence of character (moral virtue), can be derived from the representation of the divided soul. Intellectual excellence represents the portion of the soul that is rational, this part of the soul is responsible for understanding concepts, while excellence of character represents the appetites and desires aspect of the soul. Virtues of intellect can be acquired through education, making it easier to obtain than moral virtue. A habit of mind is a way of thinking that one acquires over time. It is a type of thought that involves thinking beyond what society considers right or wrong, but acknowledging through complex thought, what is morally right. It is not easily achieved and is somewhat like a muscle, in that you have to build it up over time through intellectual work and hardship. Not everyone can achieve a strong habit of mind, in fact most don’t. The habit is a way of thinking that allows one to communicate with knowledge when the answer is not initially apparent. In order to think in this complex manner a person has to be well educated in all subjects of intelligence. Having a good education goes hand in hand with having good habits of mind, because in order to have positive functioning habits, a person has to be well rounded enough to considered every possible solution to the problems or questions posed. Being able to use a habit of mind also requires a type of thinking where others nor any outside force constrains any ideas or solutions . This by definition is a habit of mind.
College students drop out of school because the classes are too hard, students are too lazy, and do not go to class, or there partying too much and not enough studying. Look, college is hard enough for those that are motivated. According to Ivory Tower Arizona State University, the number one party school in the United States has 76,000 students enroll in ASU per year. Which means there are around 240 students in a lecture hall while there are only 40% facility on campus. Students do not do well in college and want to drop out because the class room size is way too big and the college is short staffed. When you go to a big college with 240 students in a class you are just a number to the professor because he is not going to try to remember your name or try to help you pass the class. He is just there to teach and get paid. In college students study less than 5 hours a week and that is less than an hour a day. In a semester class students write less than 20 pages of notes. Since, students are not motivated in studying for school that causes the students to fail tests which leads to failing the class which leads to lowing there GPA and also the college GPA and that leads to students dropping out of college. The Ivory Tower states in 4 years 68% of college students drop out. Every University that has a lecture hall during the first week of orientation the professor says to the students look to you left and look to your right because only one of you are going to be here in the end the rest are going to drop out of the class or even drop out of college. Students are not motivated in learning the material are they want are blow off classes so they can pass the class with little or no effort that they got to put in.
Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of repeated experience (Sims & Sims, 1995). Understanding one’s learning style has many advantages as it can help one to identify the learning method or activities that can help to optimise the learning experience. It has been suggested that the importance of one’s learning style has been identified through studies and research on how one can maximise the potential for success and further learning development (Honey & Mumford, 2006). Learning styles are unique to each individual and are developed in childhood (Chase, 2001). We all have different personalities; therefore we all have preferred learning styles that suit us best. The way one learns depends on preference. Some learn by observing, listening and imitating others and draw conclusions from their experience. There are several factors that affect our learning style; for example, background, culture, religion and environment can have a major influence on one’s learning.
In college, many students are dropping out from a lack of interest in learning. The experience of receiving a higher education can be more difficult than others. A reason in which would cause this is by no motivation or desire to learn anymore. Many parents are forcing their children to attend school but they don’t want to. Having the students make the decision on whether they want to go to college is based on how they see their future. The tendency of dropouts is increasing ever year from these reasons. The craving experiments are what will help you figure out what you are trying to fix with your bad behavior. Are you trying to fix boredom, need for companionship, hunger, stress, anger, fear etc One experiment may not be enough to pinpoint the exact craving but you can start with what you know. If you know that your habit is pushed by boredom for instance, pick a new habit to do in place of your bad one. After fifteen minutes of doing this new activity, note down how you feel. Do you still feel like doing that bad habit?
What is a habit? A habit is a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up. Every person has a habit. From small, non dangerous, habits like biting nails or high pitched laughing, to dangerous ones such as smoking, drinking, and reckless behavior. Habits can go un-noticed by people because they vary in seriousness. Breaking habits varies greatly. It can be as simple as not doing something in the morning, to stopping drugs and alcohol.
Throughout the world today there are many people who strive to do well and try to create a lifestyle that will sustain them for the rest of their lives. There are many people who do the opposite. Those who do the opposite usually have bad habits that lead to routine and repetition, the convenience to go or do something, and also comfort. These examples can lead to many health problems or even death. Making bad habits is a gateway leading into many other bad habits which can lead into serious problems.
A habit can be many things, some good, some not so good. Everyone has habits that they would like to change and maybe improve upon. I believe the majority of habits I have are good ones but some are not. These bad habits are the ones I will talk about.
