My Study Habits
My current study habits are taking good notes in class, organizing my class material, Maintenance Rehearsal, studying with friends and Mass Practice. Taking good notes help because on the test the teacher not only going to ask what was on PowerPoint also what he said verbally during the lecture. Organizing the class material helps because I can recall the stuff better when it’s organized. I use maintenance rehearsal to memorize or learn information. I would keep repeating information to myself until I totally get it into my mind and it helps me sometimes not all the time. I study in my room and several distractions are present such as my phone, my desktop, and people talking while I’m trying to study. Studying with friends use to help me but now it’s not that helpful it’s just a waste of time. With these habits, my performance in test scores results in moderate performance because I wait for the last minute to study, like I said above one of my study habit is mass practice.

Space Practice will improve my memory because rather than studying nonstop before the test, it’s better that if I study for short periods of time rather than long periods of time. With this improvement, I will have some information in my mind before I review that same information again. It also helps my mind to keep information and recall it better when I need to. Another Improvement that I can use to improve my memory is overlearning the material. I didn’t quite do that until I learned it in your class. This improvement will make me keep learning even if I feel like I have learned it because it will just make me better and better. School takes up a large portion of my time as it is, but I easily become distracted. When I arrive back home from school, my phone’s notifications are being checked, and all of a sudden an hour has gone by. While completing homework on the computer, I will open another tab and end up straying away from the assignment. In addition to that, my study habits could definitely be improved. Whether it be studying or doing homework, I always end up procrastinating. I would study the night before a quiz that I have known about for a week. The top three highest learning style results were: social (at ten points) and physical and solitary (tied at nine points each). I was surprised at the social learning style result the most. I personally believed that, depending on the subject matter, I tended to focus more on the tasks at hand if I study on my own. However, upon further introspection, I have concluded that I do much better most of the time if I have at least one study partner. I am less likely to take unnecessary breaks, get distracted by my cell phone, or zone out. However, there is a limit to my social learning capabilities: if I have more than 2 partners in my study group, I am inclined to become more distracted and less focused. A group setting also helps me in regards to the physical aspect of my learning style. While visual aids do help me, I am very much a hands on learner. Especially in regards to topics like science, being able to use my hands and sense of touch greatly increases my understanding and retention of the subject matter. This also means that I feel restricted in a traditional lecture style class. I had noticed this about myself, and over the years have employed several tricks to help keep my focus. One of the most successful one I have experienced is also one that is suggested in the assessment results: extensive note taking. I hadn’t thought to employ tricks in my study habits to help with the trapped feeling, and the suggestions provided were very helpful. I have now started to use flash cards, brainstorming diagrams and even educational toys to help with my more difficult classes – like anatomy and physiology. Being able to handle the materials is extremely beneficial, and utilizing different mediums and techniques prevents me from being bored and losing
Everyone develops habits in their life, but it depends on whether or not you have an obsession or develop an addiction for it. In Chapter 9 of “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg, Angie Bachmann has a gambling addiction which led her to massive debts. She is a wife of Brian Thomas and have 3 daughters. Angie Bachmann should be held accountable for her gambling debts because her set of rules weren’t working, was tempted by Harrah’s perks, and her environment shaped her to become addicted.
Habits cannot be improved overnight; they take a long time and lots of persistence. Every time someone chooses not to attempt to perk up their habits, their chances of successfully changing them fall to zero. I credit small wins, which are “influence[s] disproportionate to the accomplishments of the victories to themselves,” for improving my study habits (Duhigg 112). There is a clear cause and effect here that is predictable, small wins set in motion another small win and many small wins become big wins. I had many small wins. I did little by little to eventually get entire assignments and readings done. The different types of techniques we learned had helped improve our studying ways to be better and more efficient. One of my studying techniques is through body movement. I learn through body movement to help me retain most of the information I took from my classes. This helps benefits my grade by if a test is coming up, I know the study techniques I need to apply. However, I have to manage time through the day in order for me to study.
This one being your first year in college, you may have trouble concentrating while you study. Some techniques that can help your concentration are being selective, relaxing, and over learning. Being selective means to make choices about what is most important to learn. When you are studying, you should be able to know what may or may not be on the test, your notes for the week can be helpful. In addition, pay attention to charts, tables, and illustrations that you think may appear on the test. Relaxing is a good technique to use because when you are relaxed you are able to absorb more information. One way to relax is to use a breathing technique (inhale, count from one to ten, and exhale, and count from one to ten, and so on). Over learning can help you fight mental vagueness. When you are struggling in a class, it is best for you to learn more than you need to know about the subject. You can use these techniques every time you are studying or when you cannot concentrate.
When I study, I use several different study strategies. The top three study strategies that I use are flash cards, I recite, rehearse, and write, and also I use chunking. Flash cards help me out a great due to the fact that I am a logical learner. I learn best when I can see facts written down on paper. It really depends on the information that I am trying to take in for the strategy that I use for studying. For instance, when studying vocabulary words and definitions I use flash cards, and other things that I study I will use other techniques. The mood that I am in when I am preparing to study will also determine the strategy that I will use to absorb the information.
First, it is important to look at the amount of time each habit takes on average. Looking in a long-term viewpoint, studying periodically takes much more time than cramming. Although it may seem as if the opposite is true, cramming is fairly speedy. Before a test, a student may spend two or three hours studying for a history exam. A student who decides to study periodically may study for thirty minutes each night starting two weeks before the exam takes place. That adds up to seven hours, more than double the time it takes to cram for the test! One may argue that by studying a little bit each night, you could study ten or even five minutes a day, but that’s not particularly effective. In a mere ten minutes, it is nearly impossible to cover the needed information. By cramming, one is able to effectively fit two weeks of information in a shorter amount of time. If you participate in several extracurricular activities and/or have a job, it may be very difficult for you to make room for studying and homework each night. Two of the most important study skills are setting goals and taking notes. A student may set a time goal, such as studying a few hours a week; set a general goal, such as trying to study hard and stay on schedule; set a specific performance goal, such as getting at least 80% of the homework problems correct. Another important study skill is taking notes. Students generally make two kinds of mistakes in taking notes. One is to try to write down everything the instructor says, which leads to confusing notes. The other is to copy concepts that they do not understand but hope to learn by memorization. Good notes are compromised of the following: 1) written information summarized in your own words; 2) outline the important concepts; 3) try to associate the lecture notes with the material text; 4) asking yourself questions and making up questions from the notes.
Learning and memory are fascinating. The world could not function without either. They both are used in many different fashions in a wide variety of places. Learning and Memory have been carefully studied by professionals but are also well known and used by the common people on a daily basis. I am one of those common people, a student who is constantly learning and making the most of my memory. Since enrolling in The Psychology of Learning and Memory class I have come to the realization that I encounter situations in my life that exemplify the very concepts I have studied. I have also learned that it is beneficial to apply the lessons learned in class to my everyday life. Positive reinforcement, learned helplessness and serial recall are a few among many of the learning and memory models that have come to action in my life and in my final reflections surrounding the course.

I will make and keep a regular study schedule. Through the time schedule, I can properly allocate my time. Study is important, but we should also allow ourselves to have some time for rest and relaxation. Next, study at the right place is also an important method to study. The right place is useless without the right surrounding conditions. For me, I will choose the same place to study everyday. For example, library is a good choice to study, it was also a place that with zero distractions. When you are studying, you should keep away from all the distractions, such as music, television, movies, friends, mobile phone and so on. In addition, we must maintain the correct attitude when we were studying. Do not waste time, the time will not wait for you. Don’t be childish, don’t think than I can’t, allocate the time for study and the time for play. I never start to study while I’m stressed. You’ll get frustrated and it isn’t going to help de-stress you. When you are stressed, you should clear your mind for a little while and study when you can focus on
The first thing a person can do to improve their study habits is take better notes. When taking notes you do not have to write down every word the teacher says, if you do that you’re not going to know what's important and what's not important. If you do that you’re going to be studying things that’s not important and that could confuse you and make studying really boring. Write down only the things that you think are important. You can even read ahead in a book and highlight what you think is good information to know. If the teacher says anything more than once, or puts emphasis on something, highlight that it could be on your next test. Good thinking skills are especially important in note taking.
