I can relate to this because every time that I have been asked to do research for a paper, the first thing I turn to is the internet. I don’t think that I have ever once gone out to find or discover my own information. The closest I have ever gotten to actually going out to find information was once in my cols class when we were all assigned a college resource to go to and ask someone working there what they are “all about”. Like Gladwell, Nicholas Carr believes the internet has negative effects. In his article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid”, Carr attempts to show as the internet becomes our primary source of information, it diminishes the ability to read books and extensive research. Carr goes on to give a very well researched account of how text on the internet is designed make browsing fast and profitable. He describes how the design for skimming affects our thinking skills and attention spans. He wraps up his argument by describing what we are losing in the shift toward using the internet as our main information source. Carr suggests the learning process that occurs in extensive research and through reading is lost. While the learning process can be beneficial to scholars and intellectuals, not everyone has the capability to follow through with it. For this assignment, we were told to use the university’s online databases to find the articles need to make a solid stance on the subject. Before this assignment, most of the time when I had to do research, I would just get on my computer and go to Google. It was so easy I never really thought to look somewhere else or even check how good the source of the information was. Now, I understand how important it is to have a reliable and solid source to build an essay around. My paper wouldn’t be nearly what it is now without the high quality articles I was able to find with help from our school’s databases.
In my opinion, a credible source is one whose arguments and facts are supported and peer-reviewed by certified experts in their specific fields such as scholarly articles and official government websites. I determine the credibility of a source by looking at several factors such as the author's background, the date it is published, and the type of source. I believe the author's reputation contributes to the credibility of a source, for example, an academic journal published by a professor in a prestigious university is much more credible than a blog post on the internet as it has gone through a rigorous review process. By July 1998 there were over 36 million Web servers, that are hosts to approximately 150 million people” (Strauss). The Internet proves to be very beneficial to education, since students have unlimited access to millions of websites with tons of information. There are only so many newspapers, journals and magazines that you can find in libraries or subscribe to. We were first assigned to find a source from the Internet, and the second assignment was to find another source from the periodicals in the USCA library. This comparison will help each individual to determine the type of reading that benefits him or her the most. From these two sources, I learned a great deal of information about the different influences and ways that people learn. I recognize and agree that people can learn in different ways. People spend a large amount of time researching products before they decide to buy them. 86% of people use search engines to research products. 62% of people who research products online buy products in the store. People who research services and products online are more likely to make a buying decision (Peneycad). 78% of people are influenced by post from companies on social media websites. 72% of people are trusting of online recommendations of products.
