The benefits of collaborative learning essays
Don’t take our word for it - see why 10 million students trust us with their essay needs.
Well, here we are. Sorry if I don’t seem that enthused right now, its because I’m writing an essay about writing and revising an essay, which when said out loud, sounds incredibly unnecessary. Now to be clear, I am not saying that this all is pointless, I’m just saying that we could simply talk about how well we are achieving the course goals instead of requiring us to write a time-consuming multiple page essay but that’s just my two cents. While I don’t really feel that great about this essay, I believe the exploratory essay has been very helpful in helping push me to achieve the goal set forth in this class. The exploratory essay wide arrangement of guidelines makes the writer change and adapt so they not only meet the guidelines of the assignment …show more content…
At the beginning of this assignment, we were told to break up into groups of four or five. These groups would go on to be our collaboration groups for this assignment and the rest of the semester. When we first got into these groups, I wasn’t sure how much my group could help me improve as a writer. Now, I would say I couldn’t be more wrong. My collaboration group worked very well together and helped each other develop our essays far beyond the level of quality they could be without the collaboration. For example, my collaboration group pointed out several errors such as missing citations and grammar errors that I either completely missed or forgot to …show more content…
For this assignment, we were told to use the university’s online databases to find the articles need to make a solid stance on the subject. Before this assignment, most of the time when I had to do research, I would just get on my computer and go to Google. It was so easy I never really thought to look somewhere else or even check how good the source of the information was. Now, I understand how important it is to have a reliable and solid source to build an essay around. My paper wouldn’t be nearly what it is now without the high quality articles I was able to find with help from our school’s databases. Next lets move on to goal number five, which is “learn to reflect on your writing practices to improve them”. Over the course of this assignment, I have had to take a step back and take a hard look at what I am writing. After studying my writing habits, I saw several things that I need to change in order to become a better writer. I needed to improve many things about my writing, such as overusing words and run-on sentences to put myself in a position to succeed. After completing this assignment, I feel I
This assignment is a testament of growth and contributed to my outlook on strategies towards improving my writing through the importance of understanding how crucial, each component of the writing process is and how in depth you should take each process. Lastly, this reflection advocated how editing is the principal task of every good writer. “To write is human, to edit is divine,” Stephen
...when just using a website. When using a website you already knew what kind of article you had before reading it. Also many of the sources on the database were quite lengthy which made it harder to get information out of it. Although finding source wasn’t like what I was use to I was able to manage finding the ones I needed to complete the papers required for the class.
Through most of my time in high school, I always found myself writing more of exploratory writing for two simple reasons; it took a shorter amount of time, and relating writing to my personal experiences was something I had no need to look up. Exploratory writing is a time to take advantage to relate your own personal experiences and an attempt to make a connection with a certain reading. The experiences you have will not be exactly the same as you’re classmate and might be very enjoyable to read. Lamott and Hairston both use explanatory and exploratory writing in their essays by explaining the techniques of what good writers do and applying their own personal experiences. By applying both explanatory and exploratory in their essay they are able to provide the reader with new ideas they can adopt to improve their writing skills.
When demonstrating my growth as a writer across several pieces, there are four main learning outcomes in which I have focused on. These include writing, reading, researching and reflecting. Within these learning outcomes, there are many different conventions and ways to understand my various projects and assignments as a writer. Throughout the English 1020 class, I have been able to observe not only my previous strengths, but myself growing as a writer by improving my ability to find strong sources as well as properly citing and explaining them, forming a more logical paragraph structure, and many more conventions when writing an assignment.
Head to head hits are still a prevalent issue in the Nfl. Should head to head hits lead to an ejection from the game? If a player in college football commits an intentional helmet to helmet hit, the penalty is an ejection. If college football can input this penalty, couldn’t the NFL? We see that former football players who suffered many concussions over their playing careers, have long lasting effects. Some current players feel as though that they can’t control where their hits land and injuries are just a part of the game. Some fans feel as though all these penalties are taking the fun away the game. Former NFL players are an example of what helmet to helmet hits can do.
This essay taught me that even though I was learning a lot from this course, that there was still room to improve. Likewise, I ended up with the assumption I had done great on this essay since I wrote about a topic I enjoyed, makeup. I was proven wrong. The evaluation paper called for evaluating and expanding on the quotes you had provided in your paper, something I wasn’t as familiar with until this class. I didn 't do so well on this particular essay but I had the opportunity to learn from my mistakes. Mrs.Robinson gave a get out of jail free card when she said we could rewrite one of our first three essays and this was the essay I chose. After revising this essay, I truly feel like I understand more about the editing process. I went back and checked each paragraph to make sure everything was perfect, changed word choice, and looked over and over for grammatical errors. Because of this I now know that I need to revise the essay before I turn it in since every writer makes
One would have not known much about how to write an effective essay until they have clearly edited their previously written essay during the Expository Writing Stations. Anyone who has looked over their writing multiple times and has found ways to enhance and professionalize it will learn to write in a more clear and concise manner than they had done before. The Expository Writing Stations has helped change the students’ understanding of how to write a proper essay by having the the students edit and review one another’s essays, finding some things that they should have put on their own essay to help enhance the writing. Students also find out about what components of their writing sounds and looks clear, and how their writing could have developed. Their understanding of using correct, accurate word choice and evidence has evolved. The following examples of reflections show how one has thoroughly understood the insufficient parts of their essay and
Throughout this semester I have written several essays and journals using techniques both important and unfamiliar to me. This class helped me use these techniques and steps that are involved in creating and formalizing an essay. The writing process of an essay includes information gathering, creating ideas, and writing it on paper to create a cohesive and organized paper. In complete certainty I can say I lack many of the skills necessary to create such a paper, but during this course I have learned some writing methods which I believe have improved my essays. The essays and journals in this portfolio reveal both my strengths and weaknesses in my writing and how I have both continued to make the same errors and improved in other areas.
Possessing an underutilized brain is like making a billion dollars, but simply hiding the money away forever: there are so many opportunities that stem from it, but it is worthless because it is never put to use. Rene Descartes felt this way himself, as he said, “It is not enough to have a good mind. The main thing is to use it well.” I wholeheartedly agree with this quote; a mind is the most precious of commodities but one’s brain is not employed, than it is as useless as a pile of dirt. Still, not only does one have to make use of their mind, it must be in a way that can benefit society. Only than has one truly “used it well.” Despite what some may believe, it is not enough to simply be intelligence; one must use it to make something of themselves.
Through each Milestone I have rediscovered the true importance of each step in the writing process. Outlining my thoughts and ideas on my essay topic is essential to building an organized draft. Proofreading and reforming the first initial draft yourself, as well as having friends and family read your essay helps create a neater, more cohesive essay. Knowing these important steps will help in me succeed in my remaining courses here at Southern New Hampshire University.
“India is the meeting place of the religions and among these Hinduism alone is by itself a vast and complex thing, not so much a religion as a great diversified and yet subtly unified mass of spiritual thought, realization and aspiration”(Sri Aurobindo). Hindus believe in karma, which means that the actions that are made will affect this life or the lives to come (Fisher 120). Reincarnation is a rebirth in a new life (Fisher 120). In Hinduism the roles that the women play in their society is similar to Rukmani’s in Nectar in a Sieve. Hindu women take care of the children and help the husband with farm work or any other work ("Hindu Beliefs"). The three main themes in the book that connect to the Hindu religion are Humans choose their actions which cause happiness or sadness, suffering purifies for the soul, and truth is the most important moral value to have. Every action made by humans is based on a choice the outcome could be happy or sad.
As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
Although now I have a more concrete understanding of analytical essay writing, I did not possess the skills to write as such seven months ago. I do not stress over a quickly drawn down arrow on my essay. In-class writing days do not keep me from getting to bed on time, because they seem to be a normal part of the curriculum. Moreover, I have adjusted to the fast paced learning styles of many of my teachers, who expect to squeeze in all the material in time for exactly 26 days of review before the end of the year testing slate. Such a proposal, which seemed daunting at first, has become
Looking through my past submissions and pieces of work throughout this past semester, I have made many realizations in regards to my progress as an English student. Through re-reading my writing, and reviewing the feedback I have received on my writing, I can recognize my growth as an English student. In addition to realizing my growth, I am also able to see a lot of areas that still need work. This past semester I have faced many challenges, I have pushed myself to go outside of my comfort zone, and I have excelled in several areas. After analyzing my past works from this semester, I have identified many re-occurring strengths and weaknesses from each unit, as well as challenges and goal assessments for myself in the future.
