With most leaders, leadership cannot be taught, but learned through experience and ingenuity. Learning from mistakes is one of the greatest ways to obtain knowledge as an individual is able to develop the wisdom to make good decisions and choices for the organization. While making the wrong decisions leads an individual to obtain experience from his failures. He is able to use this experience to make good decisions because he is conscious of his mistake and know what to do in order to not make it happen again. Experience is one of the best tools to become a leader as the wisdom obtained from it serves as a guide to making good decisions. Secondly, a leader’s personality can determine his leadership style and his willingness to be a leader. With a high degree of certain personality traits, a leader is able to be formed as a high degree in these traits allow him to be able to handle a number of factors. To become an effective leader an individual must be able to adapt from his mistakes and inspirational to execute ideal decisions that can move an organization forward.
In order to become an effective leader it is necessary for a person to be conscious of mistakes and learning from it. Through experience, humans are more capable to learn as experience allows the individual the ability to permanently change his or her behavior according to the situation of that said experience. Successful leaders have always learned from their mistakes. No matter what can be said about their overwhelming power over their organization. ...both key differences between Harrison and Grace in terms of their overall leadership style. As a failure can be a great way to learn, the leader must be willing to take account of his mistakes in order for a change to occur. Secondly, personality is also critical as high amounts of conscientiousness and emotional stability is important for the leader to lead accordingly in any situation. Grace having an inspirational personality was able to lead his campaign effectively while dealing with its stressful environment. With inspiration he was able to inspire others into accomplishing his goals which is a perfect example of a leader because people were willing to do whatever he asked. Without having leaders that share these traits, most individuals will end up like Harrison, a manager who failed because of his unlikable personality and failure to recognize his mistakes.
One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
It takes a long time to become an effective and respected leader but can evaporate very quickly with one misstep. It needs to be nurtured and cultivated every day. My personal leadership style is to observe and correct. As a junior member, one of my Chief told me, “I don’t care how long it takes you to do a job as long as you do it right the first time because if it is wrong you will be the one fixing it.” That resonated with me because it allowed me to take risks and learn from my mistakes making me a better technician. I firmly believe one of the best learning tools is failure. His statement let me know it was all right to fail but if you do you will be learning from it. Identifying weaknesses within my leadership abilities and striving to correct them will result in being consistently looked upon a leader within our
Leadership is a quality which cannot be acquired by any person from the other but it can be acquired by self-determination of a person. Leadership can best be called the personality of the very highest ability-whether in ruling, thinking, imagining, innovation, warring, or religious influencing. Leadership is practiced not so much in words a it is in attitude and in actions. Their actions leave a long lasting memory in the line of history and lead up to may events that occur today. To be a leader one will need many qualities. Leaders have a purpose and strategies to accomplish that purpose. They are driven and motivated. In the end they should be able to attain good results. These innate talents help to make up a leader that will succeed and be efficient in carrying out tasks. But, the purpose of this paper is determine what truly makes a leader successful. A successful leader should be considered more on their impact rather than their accomplishments of their organizations alone for they are not sufficient in determining the key to their success .
The leadership is a result of a combination of traits, with special emphasis on the personal qualities of the leader, which he should possess certain personality traits that would be special facilitators in leadership performance. This theory shows that leaders are born as such, there is no likelihood of 'making' them later with personal development techniques.
Leadership is the action of leading a group of people or an organization. Leadership is leading a group of people or company to reach a result or further and the organization. A leader is supposed to be an example of how all employees are expected to act and what they should be striving for. Good leaders also don’t use their position within a company to take advantage of the company and its employees. A good leader is supposed to be able to perform their job with high standards, efficiency, and honor. However, for every good leader, there are bad leaders and the worse the leader the more detrimental he or she becomes to employees and the company they run. Poor leadership skills can ultimately ruin a company 's chance of success. The attitude
In order for a leader to be a leader he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. And when you develop this belief then you are better able of affirmative influence “on others”.

There are different traits associated with leaderships; many researchers have come to the conclusion that leaders will have certain attribute that will make them unique. Stogdill’s on his several surveys came up with 10 positive traits of leadership Northhouse (2013, p.21). After several researches, a list of traits that are central to leadership qualities are the self-confidence of a leader, how intelligent he or she is, how determined they are to achieve to their personal/organisational goal, how much integrity they have and how sociable are they Northhouse (2013, p.23). This is not to say that these are the only traits that are identified with a leader.
This book emphasizes on theories of becoming a leader, it is not a “how to” book by any means. Bennis states how leaders contribute to society and how crucial they are, along with the characteristics that come along with being a leader. He provides intriguing insight about leaders and emphasizes the integrity and authenticity that such people carry. In this reading, Bennis (the author) recognizes an immense amount of traits/characteristics a leader possesses which are: maturity, curiosity, trust, passion, guiding vision, candor, self knowledge, and daring. Bennis claims that people are not born with these traits, and that people gain these traits by pushing themselves to exceed others.
“Leadership is a learned skill” is what the book, The Leadership Moment by Michael Useem taught me. There are many core values that a leader must possess in order to effectively lead a team and many of them such as effective communication skills are learned and developed in an individual as they get older and more experienced. Communication skills are just one necessary characteristic. Other characteristics such as respect and determination are also key to an effective leader.
As a growing debate, the question at hand is whether great leaders are born with specific leadership traits, or if one can be taught certain traits over time. According to (Wikipedia.com) the approach of listing leadership qualities, often termed "trait theory of leadership", assumes certain traits or characteristics will tend to lead to effective leadership. I believe that leadership traits such as honest, competent, initiative, inspiring, hardworking, intelligent, and the ability to lead the masses, are some of the leadership traits one should possess. Within this paper, I will examine the overall concept of leadership traits, while observing the traits that were, or can be associated with successful leaders.
Firstly, leadership can be discussed through the trait approach. Bolden et al. (2003) characterized the Trait theory as a method to identify the characteristics and skills of a competent leader. Through this method, traits that are essential in the smooth functioning of an organization, can be sorted out. And then selecting people who possess such traits by placing them at various leadership positions. This theory was generally inconclusive as the skills and traits were quite inconsistent. A conclusion was drawn that people possessing such traits might make them leaders but the absence of the same does not prove to lead to unsuccessful
Perspectives from Management Educators, the author conducted a research on whether a person can be taught to be a leader. In this article, scholars were asked the same question, and although each scholar gave a definite “Yes” as their answer, they all gave their unique point-of-view on how aspects of leadership can be taught. One scholar, Steve Stumpf, gave his insight of leadership skills being taught as, “the methods of teaching need to focus on creating meaningful experiences from which the student can learn. Book knowledge is only a small part of effective leadership, due to the fact that leadership is a performance sport. Leadership requires both thinking and doing to the satisfaction of many others with diverse expectations.” (Doh, 2003) Stumpf’s point-of-view goes in collaboration of a solution I mentioned earlier which was to incorporate these leadership skills into day-to-day interactions. With people being proactive with their leadership skills by stepping forward and conducting roles in a timely and effective manner rather than being a reactive leader in which an individual begin to use leadership skills as a last resort to solve a problem. Another scholar, Mike Hitt, mentioned that “there are some people who are more prone to be leaders than others.” This would solely be dependent on the personality of each individual. He continued, “some people are more extroverted and some more introverted. And maybe those who are
The most important quality that differentiates a leader from other people is the ability to think strategically. Vision is the most important aspect that drives a leader’s strategy. It is all about where you want to be. Other qualities include Decision making, problem solving, time management, self-motivation, emotional intelligence and many more. Once we know the type of leadership, it is easy to find what leadership skills we have and which we need to develop which is explained in the book “Leadership: Theory, application, skill development (5th ed.) by Lussier and Achua.” Also, Keirsey Style Sorter personality type helps to knowing our temperament type, and work on our weakness and to emerge out as a good leader.
Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic. You are a leader if someone else choses to follow you.
