The issue of sagging pants has always been controversial. Some would argue that sagging is a temporary fashion statement, and there’s nothing wrong with it. Others would say sagging isn’t professional, and won’t get you far. After all, being a black man in the United States is hard enough. We don’t need any additional stereotypes that we are “gang affiliated”, or have no knowledge of “common decency”. As defined the Merriam Webster Dictionary, sagging is an object declining to a lower level. Sagging pants is a widespread controversy in our nation, this issue has led to many campaigns t advocate against young men, especially Black males from wearing their pants at an unnecessarily low level. I am against sagging pants because it isn’t morally right, displays a lack of discipline, and places more burdens on black males within the society.
Although clothing styles change from generation to generation, the newest fad is always a result of the old. It’s a cause and effect relationship, if children of this generation are dressing inappropriately, future generations will find this acceptable and go a step further. If clothing restrictions are enforced in the now, there is hope for future generations.
Self-expression is of importance in any child’s life, but self-expression shouldn’t be a detriment. In my opinion, the way this generation dresses now is definitely harming their character and reputation. Many business professionals, professors, and more find this way of dressing offensive. Parents face endless amounts of criticism, and backfire for allowing their child (ren) to step of their home in such a fashion. It’s also harmful to future generations, because they follow in the footsteps of those older than them. Children learn by exa...

...out having your pants falling off of your backside for the world to see. You would think common decency would kick in automatically to alert these young men to keep their pants at waist level for professional purposes. Consequences should definitely be handed down to those who can’t obey the common decency clause. Common decency is after all, doing what is expected of you as a human being, and looking and dressing in an appropriate manner.
This generation has a very revealing style, especially with the sagging of pants. I believe if the parents of these young children enforced that there pants stay at a certain level, change would occur. By making children follow authority, their being taught maturity and how to cope with different angles of life in a mature fashion. Clothing restrictions will help kids become more successful and approachable adults in the future.
I feel that in today’s society that men are discriminated against for the way they wear their clothes, specifically, their pants. For many guys sagging your pants are a fashion statement, although many people perceive individuals sagging their pants as “bad” individuals. As a kid, I did wear my pants below my butt, but as I grew older, it gradually raised. I am a professional person, but my style and my comfort have my pants lie just below my hips. I wear a belt, but having my pants all the way above my waist makes me extremely uncomfortable. Even for my wedding, I had to have my pants altered, because tuxedo pants only sit high on the waist. I find it hard to have a law against someone’s choice of fashion, and that one could get fined in some states for sagging your pants. It seems a bit discriminatory when some women can go out barley wearing anything and get fined. The sagging pants law should be eradicated because it is discriminatory and a waste of resources, and instead left up to the community to decide weather they would like to provide services to people who sag their pants.
Although dress codes promote safety there are some negative affects of it. Dress codes don’t prepare kids for the jobs in the future. “Some employers—some dotcom companies, for example—care less about how their employees dress and more about their work.” (Wilder 4) Even though a lot of jobs don’t require dress
Depending on who you ask, this fashion became popular in the early 1940’s. As we can see, history has a tendency to line things up for the “perfect storm.” This just so happen to be the time that thousands of service men, fresh out of boot camp arrived in Los Angeles looking to blow off steam before being deployed into combat around the world. To these service men, large baggy pants and jackets were a symbol of hate or disrespect to the
A variety of North American local governments such as school systems, transit agencies, and including airlines passed laws and regulations against people wearing sagging jeans and although
...oday there are increasingly fewer attacks on the student body regarding their clothing, undoubtedly to prevent upsetting more parents. We can see in Source F that this pressure to look a certain way never really ends, and this is true for both men and women. Although this pressure to have a perfect appearance doesn’t stop after high school, the Bedford North Lawrence Community Schools should be understanding and more lenient on some of the less scandalous clothing choices to make students feel comfortable and give them a realistic feel for how people dress and behave in public. In the end, everyone’s body is their own personal business and should not be dictated by another person or shamed for how it is presented, however BNL behaved the exact opposite of this at the beginning of the school year, making the way the administration handled the situation inappropriate.
Sagging is the fashion of wearing pants with the waist around your lower hip or sometimes even further down than that (Mikkelson). The fad began in Hoosegow prisons, because inmates were not allowed to have belts. Without belts, their pants sagged. This trend was quickly adopted into the hip hop culture. The defiant style was picked up by a variety of rap artist like Ice-T and Too Short. Most rap artists wore saggy pants to promote a tough guy reputation or image. In 1992 Kriss Kross dropped his debut album (Totally Crossed Out), which showed a couple of 13-year-old rappers sagging their pants (Mikkelson). People started to pick up on the style and sagging your pants became a fashion statement. Only three years later in 1995, the style made its way into teen culture and every kid was slinging them low. Like all other fashion trends, sagging your pants came to an end in the fashion world. This didn’t stop thugs and delinquents from wearing them as a sign of defiance. Now,
Varying Issues Corresponding to the School Dress Code Numerous cases have been presented and highlighted in the media based off of accounts from angered parents and students protesting the school dress code. Multiple reports are taken from females who experience the shorter end of the stick due to increased fashion interests and sexist mindsets of their school staff. Shame suits are humiliating outfits that those who break the rules must wear as a form of punishment, most of the time these consist of extremely unflattering clothes that have written phrases on them indicating that their appearance is due to their violation of the school rules. Punishments indicated a risk to the violators education caused by missed classes. Few in society do approve of the dress code as it controls female students’ modesty, banishes distraction, and preserves the professional atmosphere inside a school.
Being exposed to a variety of new things and different people can cause one to forget their true identity, who they actually are, and who their parents raised them to be. They begin to express these identities in many different ways; one particular way in which they express themselves is through what they wear. Values and originality goes out the window, because being accepted is the only thing they really care about. Clothes also play a major role in how one expresses themselves. Dress codes within the schools has always been a significant controversial topic. Both sides of the issue are argued, and different people usually will have different point of views on the subject of implementing the standardized
Dress code, probably one of the most talked about topics by teenagers. Most teenagers believe that dress code is “witless” or “incompetent”. Why do we think this? Well, most adults believe that keeping a strict dress code keeps us educated because apparently our clothes are “distracting”. Now I can see how wearing booty shorts and a tank top would be distracting, but how is wearing sweatpants distracting? If anything wearing sweatpants keeps us comfortable, because I know that being uncomfortable is way more distracting than wearing sweatpants. When I wear sweatpants I can lay back and relax while the teacher talks, but if I am uncomfortable I am more likely to move around and fidget with my clothes rather than listen to the lesson.
Many students lose self esteem when they can’t express themselves. Therefore students should not be required to wear uniforms. This is necessary because most students would like to show their style and technique. In addition, uniforms limit the freedom of expression for students in school. Furthermore, uniforms are expensive and parents may not be able to afford clothing that can be worn at school and home. Finally, students should not be forced to wear
...les, and we shouldn't be afraid to show them off to the people around us. How cares if we dress a little different. We are expressing our own individualities through the clothes we wear, and if other people don't like it, tuff noogies. Whoever, I think the only time we should be concerned about what others are wearing is when their style is a threat to our lives, or the life of the person wearing the garment. This concept could also be used in the other topics I wrote about in this essay. Unless there is harm to the individual, or individuals around them, we as a society shouldn't be to concerned about the styles of others. Usually these wild styles are a fads, and people will grow out of them. I know that I was able to grow out of many wild styles that my parents weren't sure if I would come out of or not. So if I was able to overcome these styles, others will to.
It is time to remove from the classrooms the importance that students choose to give to clothing brands and price tags. Because a school should not have any other distraction rather than learning. What kind of environment should we create for our kids to receive their education? A school where kids are constantly worrying about the latest fashion trends? Or a school where students are expected to arrive dressed with a neat uniform? It is difficult to believe that something as simple as students wearing school uniforms to attend class can establish a difference in students, teacher and parents’s life. For example, imagining a cop walking out on the streets without his uniform. That would be perturbing because there is no way of recognizing
Marketing, advertising, and the media all try to influence the way our generation dresses. Their reasons are mainly profit based. We also make our clothing choices based on the Functionality of the garment. Consumers of our generation often look at the comfort, durability, and adaptability of a piece before purchasing. History has had a great influence on the look of most clothing worn today. Clothes reminiscent of the past are often known as "retro" which has become one of the signature styles of Generation Y. Clothing also helps us to express ourselves. Youth often choose clothing to reflect their unique personality. These factors are explained further below.
First, a teenager always feels it is necessary to be just like everyone else. You may wonder why this is true. Well, if a teenager went to school dressed in their favorite style of clothing, they may feel like an outcast compared to everyone else. Why does this matter? Most teenagers do not like to stick out or be center of attention when it comes to their peers. Drawing attention can get them bullied for trying to be their own person. Silly, right? In the article Teenage Fashion: What’s Cool Now?, the article reads “Teens are more concerned with what their peers are wearing than anything else.” Fashion does not seem like that big of a deal to little kids and adults, but in a person's teen years, it is everything. Fashion shows off one's personality.
In former times teenagers find themselves expressing who they truly are by methods society sees as rebellion or protest. The beginning of this new era of rebellion began in the 1920’s with the United States reaching their industrialized peak. This rebellion was most found in the women. Women began to see and explore new fashion and styles rather than sticking to their mother’s old school ways of dressing. Womens hem line in dresses started to become shorter and shorter inventing the modernized skirt. Society found this absurd and schools began to fill with this new idea of fashion. Moving forward into more modern years, fashion was seen everywhere throughout the United States and mainly in public schools. Students began to experiment with their limited choices of appare...
