Today 's students are being dress code profiled Are students being dress code profiled? That is the question one must ask oneself, because the clothes that an individual wears can definitely play a huge role in the impression others may have on them. When a student hits adolescence, their body starts to go through a variety of changes. They begin to find their inner being and start to become the person they want to be. Often times, pre-teens find this stage of life to be very intimidating. The pre-teen usually experiences this important stage of transformation during the middle school period. This is the stage in life when everything begins to change, their emotions begin to run high because of the chemical and physical changes happening in …show more content…
Being exposed to a variety of new things and different people can cause one to forget their true identity, who they actually are, and who their parents raised them to be. They begin to express these identities in many different ways; one particular way in which they express themselves is through what they wear. Values and originality goes out the window, because being accepted is the only thing they really care about. Clothes also play a major role in how one expresses themselves. Dress codes within the schools has always been a significant controversial topic. Both sides of the issue are argued, and different people usually will have different point of views on the subject of implementing the standardized …show more content…
It is proclaimed that dress codes objectify females in an unfair manner. Ways in which they do this is by making one feel bad about their body and blaming them for publicizing sexual harassment. Dress code violation often results in girls being removed from class and missing the lesson. Females get sent home, given a hideous pair of clothes to change into, or restricted from meaningful school functions like the prom. A student named Marcia Stevens personally experienced this type of discrimination. Before the incident, she was involved in her reputation was different; teachers classified her as “a fine student without behavioral problems.” (Pomerantz 1 ) It wasn 't the clothes she had on but rather the amount of cleavage she was showing. Stevens cleavage was only visible because her chest is a bit larger than the other girls. “She was punished for having the wrong kind of ("fat," "messy") body in an article of clothing that was not considered inappropriate on other kinds of ("thin," "neat") bodies. Marcia 's body was "inappropriate" because it spilled out; it was not "ladylike" or "school like," it was not tidy, and it was not easily contained. In short, her body was visible as a body. And the visibility of a young woman 's body, according to this dress code interpretation, was tantamount to a crime. Her body made "maintaining a suitable school atmosphere"
I disagree with the school dress code because it doesn't allow people to express themselves, people can't dress for the weather, and it doesn't let people choose how they want to look because it's supposedly a distraction. The dress code is "The bottom of your shirt must at least meet the top of your pants or shorts, and undergarments should not be exposed. There must be a substantial covering over both shoulders. See-through clothing or clothing that is so very tight that it draws attention to oneself are also unacceptable. Shorts/skirts must have at least a 4" inseam."
For most students dressing up a specific way is the way they bring forth their personality and express some sort of freedom they possess by being different. In the article, “Arguments Against School Uniforms,” Neil Kokemuller wrote, “A major reason students, as well as some parents and educators, don’t like uniforms is that they restrict student individuality.” From my personal experiences people can tell what type of person someone is by looking at their clothes as well as their behavior. For example, in school we are often told to
In School Uniforms confidence is hard to find in an ugly uniforms. A lot of confidence is found in trying to be unique, people wear things they feel comfortable and confident in. Teachers are always saying how important it is to just be ourselves and not worry about what others might (“I believe”). If were going to make kids wear uniforms at least make it to wear its something everyone is comfortable with, it's understandable that it’s suppose to be professional but, its easier to have just a dress code because, then everyone is happy. Why should people stand in the way of a students fashion choices, people shouldn't discriminate against them, people always say it’s what's on the inside that counts not what’s on the outside. Clothing is a major way in which human beings, especially with teens, communicate their personalities to the world without having to speak or perform physical behaviors (Christopher). Students already have so many things ta...
What are the advantages of looking like everyone else inside a school? Millions of people in the United States say that there should be dress codes. Are you one of those people? There should be dress codes for public schools for three main reasons: it will make a better school, it will save families money, and teens will stop trying to impress their peers with what they wear and focus more on school because everyone will look similar.
High school is typically a time when kids begin to distinguish themselves from one another. Students begin to develop their own sense of personal style, desperately trying to both fit in and stand out simultaneously. Being self-conscious and often lacking the confidence needed to assert themselves, teens are forced to use clothing and outward appearance as the means to manifest this individuality. Thus, students should not be forced to wear uniforms to school. Standard uniforms are unproven deterrents to student violence; are a "Band-Aid" to cover up the real problems faced by children and teens; and they violate students' right of self-expression, depriving them of their search for identity.
Dress can be a window into the social world. That is why teenagers should be able to interact with other students at school as who they really are and not be punished for it.
Students wear clothing that allows them to express themselves. Whether it's a favorite movie or band, or just a favorite color, students should be allowed to wear this clothing to school. And finally, uniforms should take the spot of dress-codes. Uniforms are used in the majority of jobs in today's world and teenagers should get used to wearing a uniform for school. Dress codes do not help but hurt students of all ages.
" That statement shows that a lot of students would have to change their wardrobe because of the dress code or something related to the dress code. Also, some students get suspended when they get dress-coded or get detained, which isn't fair because it shouldn't be a big deal. Body Paragraph #1 - "The Body"
Imagine you're in class on a hot summer day. You're wearing a tank top and shorts so you don't sweat too much. Suddenly, you get called down to the principal's office and you don't know why. You find out its because the outfit you're wearing is a "distraction." Dress codes are too strict and nobody can wear what they want or what they are comfortable in because of them. They limit self expression, ruin education, and are gender specific.
Why should schools modify their dress code? All throughout the United States of America, schools have dress codes. Some dress codes have meaning full and low dress code rules, others have rules that make teens feel uncomfortable and get punished for. Daily, students are judged on how they dress. Dealing with a dress code takes time and effort for a teen to understand why they are being punished because they have the right to express themselves.
Students shouldn’t have to wear something they aren’t comfortable in if it doesn’t show who they really are. “But self-expression isn’t an inconvenience or distraction. It’s an essential part of our democracy” (Buggs and Rowland). Students shouldn’t have to wear what school force them to wear if they want to express who they are through their clothing and how they look.“Dress codes can also help cut down on bullying by taking the focus away from what students are wearing” (Buggs and Rowland). If schools have dress codes it can prevent bullying. Also it can help students focus more on what they are learning instead of trying to figure out what one students shirt
In a public setting like a high school, how a student or students dress, can have a negative effect on the entire student body, even with a dress code. On
High Schools across America have been enforcing strict dress codes for ages, however, where is the line drawn between distraction of one’s classmates, and degradation of one’s outward expression of their inner self. Freedom of expression is a civil liberty outlined within the first amendment in our nation’s constitution of which public school systems are bound to by the fact that they are in fact a government regulated agency. Clothing is a form of expression and thus students should have the right to dress the way they want to, with this comes first impressions and the ability of a free citizen to be able to make a statement however it is they please. Clothing has also become a huge part of culture throughout the world. Society has become
Kids and teens have the right to pick out what they wear, sure it may take a bit longer, but in the long run it is worth it. Everyone has the right to express themselves freely and by the way they look. It can tell what kind of person they are. Think about it, you go into a school that has uniforms you see everyone wearing the same stuff who is who? What kind of personality could they have, maybe one like being a brick in the wall. Walk into a school without uniforms and you can instantly tell anyone’s personality by what they wear, so they express their emotions through their clothing.
Now that you’ve tossed the graduation cap into the air and the diplomas have been collected, it’s time to face the job industry.
