When we think of about rights of passage, most often thoughts that come to our mind are ceremonies like birth, puberty and marriage. Rites of passage are things we experience during our entire lifetime from the beginning to the end. These things, however, are different from initiations because an initiation is something where you have to prove yourself in order to be accepted, but a rite of passage is about a more personal acceptance into your own life. And in my opinion the passage into adulthood is the most important one in a person’s life.

I have participated in various groups through my adolescence and young adulthood, several of which had defined rights of passage. The first group I will address is my religion; I am an Episcopalian, and when I was 13 I became confirmed. In the Episcopal church there is a tendency to baptize children soon after birth, so it is a passive acceptance of religion. Once one has matured they have the option to choose the religious sacrament of confirmation. According to the Episcopal Church webpage, confirmation is defined as a mature commitment to Christ, and is affirmed by the bishop of the diocese. During a strenuous trek in the mountains, a teenage boy dies of starvation. A girl wearing an elegant gown completes a dance with her father. Both of these things come from rites of passage. Why are they so different? Rites of passage are almost as diverse and widespread as individual cultures. Depending on cultural values, initiation into adulthood varies immensely. Unquestionably, all rites of passage start with the same purpose. The goal is to bring a child into adulthood. However, the process might be redundant or even harmful. Some rites of passage should continue to be practiced, like the Quinceañera and Bar Mitzvah, because they have strong benefits and cultural value while others, like hazing and cutting should not because they can harm and possibly kill people.
As we grow up, we develop as people, and learn things from others around us. In these selections from East Asia, there’s different elements of growing up. From these stories and poems from Korea, China, and Japan, there is experience coming of age in more than one way. For all teens, the transition into adulthood is generally seen as a challenging and scary process. For teens diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as well as their caregivers, this transition is often more complicated. The period of transition for individuals with ASD into adulthood is intensely more challenging due to their “unique characteristics, the lack of services that address the special needs of such individuals in adulthood, and the expectations of society for a typical path to adulthood in the face of atypical problems” (Geller and Greenberg, 2009, pg. 93). In this essay I will be going to consider the lifespan development process and describe the following changes in an infant from content supported in my text. Development is crucial for a healthy wellbeing. As a physiotherapist it is significant to understand development in age stages, as it will aid knowing how young children will react compared to an adolescence who is more development mentally, emotionally, physically, socially and culturally.
Emerging Adulthood represents the period of development from late teens through their twenties, mainly focusing on the ages 18-25. This is the period which people start exploring and realizing the capabilities of their lives, which then helps them characterize as adults and no longer teenagers. The novel of Cather in The Rye portrays the protagonist Holden Caulfield’s internal conflictions in dealing with the loss of his innocence in facing towards the ideals of adulthood. Subsequently, the loss of his younger brother Allie impinged Holden’s future actions in attempts of preserving the memory of his brother along with his innocence. A person leaves childhood and enters adulthood in many ways there are cultural, religious, or social events. A common way in many cultures is by a rite of passage or ceremonies; a rite of passage is a ritual or event that shows that a person is now an adult. A rite of passage usually reflects certain things that are important in a culture such as values, and beliefs. Rites of passage can be described as specifications that need to be met and occur around the same time as things such as puberty, and marriage. Common types of these ceremonies are usually found in religion; some examples of these ceremonies include baptism, and a Bat Mitzvah. All of these things are considered rites of passage for a person to become an adult in their respective religions.
There are few fields within the child development science. One of them is represented by the psychoanalytical theory, which looks at the child emotional development within the context of social interaction and early attachments. This framework is called psychosocial as it looks on the emotional and social aspects. Running in parallel and influencing each other there are two more main areas, cognitive and physical. Although I am focusing on the aspects of the psychosocial development, it is important to remember that all these areas are being affected one by the other, where the development of the emotional skills plays central role in a regular development of cognitive and physical skills.
Our reading states that rites of passage are changes that occur in our lifecycle (Crapo, 2013). These include births, puberty, marriage, and death with many changes happening between those times. Some people look forward to a hunting trip, going away to summer camp, or just gaining more independence as a rite of passage. During young adulthood, range from 18- 40 years old, life is quite busy since people are always on the run. It is easy to say that many people do not think what they eat before they eat.
