There are two different but similar stages in a person’s life: childhood and adulthood. I remember when I was a child, all I ever wanted to do was being an adult. Now that I am an adult or semi adult, I wish to be a child again. Looking back at my childhood everything seemed so easy. Now that I’m out in the “real world” everything seems to be ten times harder. As we continue to grow and develop we go through several stages of life. These characteristics can be distinguished by these similarities and differences: our thoughts in each stage, our actions in each stage, and our experiences.
Children are known to act more in a free manor, worrying mostly about themselves the others. Over time they learn to consider other people’s feelings when they complete an action. However, adults tend to control their actions by the world and thoughts around them. Children tend to act on their impulses, for example when they see something they want they go and get it. As adults, we tend to stop, and think about the action. The thoughts that are behind the actions tend to have similarities. There is an obvious mental difference in learning abilities and other capabilities between children minds and adult minds, but the basic thoughts, instinctive thoughts, remain. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, many themes are discussed throughout the story. The most significant theme is how over the course of the story, Jem and Scout slowly mature after specific events, and realize the reality of good and evil. Along the way, they meet Tom Robinson, a black man who is convicted of raping a white girl, who plays a major role in the story. Mrs. Dubose, a senile grumpy woman, shows what “real courage” is. Arthur Radley, known as Boo, is a recluse who is said to have tried to kill his father. As the events unfold, Jem and Scout are hit with the reality of racism and social inequality, but most of all, how good and evil play a role in people’s minds, and hearts.
Jeremiah Atticus “Jem” Finch, the older brother of the Scout, transitions into adolescence during the course of To Kill a Mockingbird. At the start of the novel, he is Scout’s constant playmate, and being four years her senior, he tries to protect her.
Throughout many experiences we have all had the most astounding would have to most probably be the transition from adolescents to adults. However, the more profound realizations come from the recognition of the symbols in each story and how they relate to the main characters lives as a whole. In Catcher in the Rye and Stand by Me the main characters, Geordie LaChance (from Stand By Me), and Holden Caulfield (from Catcher in the Rye) are going through the change from adolescence to adulthood and many literary devices help them describe to the audience this change in a very personal perspective. These main points throughout the stories made by the use of theme, symbolism, and motif which are an important part of why J.D. Salinger, author of Catcher in the Rye, and Stephen King, who originally wrote the story for which Stand By Me is based on were so successful in capturing attention of people going through the change and giving them wisdom with the knowledge they provide within the stories.
Emerging Adulthood represents the period of development from late teens through their twenties, mainly focusing on the ages 18-25. This is the period which people start exploring and realizing the capabilities of their lives, which then helps them characterize as adults and no longer teenagers. This topic of psychology is compelling to me because it’s a stage that every adult has lived through, it’s interesting that we have all experienced it differently based on our life circumstances and demographics. In conclusion, the growing up or the two stages in life are governed totally by a series of situations, parenting, and events that affect the outcome of how the individuals will handle the changes in life. Using human intellect and determining aspects that are normal, life will be lived and a good balanced person in society will be achieved. Because every person is different and an individual, the outcome in everyone will be different. Mature people may encounter different levels of stressful situations or circumstances than younger adults. They are more practical in coping with stress and have a greater acceptance of some things in life that cannot be altered or improved, and, can easily adapt to changes that will occur in life.
They can dedicate to feel needed and have confidence in their abilities to motivate for themselves. They both learn that not all decisions have a right and positive outcome. They also learn from their process to make better decisions next time. Characteristics of life are meaningful who they are as a person. Also, the lesson that parents teach their children to be responsible.
