Childhood and adulthood are two different periods of one’s lifetime but equally important. Childhood is the time in everybody’s life when they are growing up to be an adult. This is when they are being considered babies because of their youthfulness and innocence. Adulthood is the period of time where everybody is considered “grown up,” usually they begin to grow up around the ages of eighteen or twenty-one years old but they do remain to develop during this time. However, in some different backgrounds, not everybody is not fully adults until they become independent with freedom, responsible for their own actions, and able to participate as an adult within society. Although childhood and adulthood are both beneficial to our lives, both periods share some attributes such as independence, responsibility, and innocence that play distinctive roles in our development. Both of these periods in everybody’s life have different facets when it comes to independence and freedom. Childhood is the time when both male and female should be living according to their parents’ rules but not only their parent’s rules. There are rules outside of the walls of their home such as rules and regulations at school they must abide by as well. Living under a set of rules is easy for some people that have yet to make the necessary decisions to conduct themselves in the appropriate manner. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, many themes are discussed throughout the story. The most significant theme is how over the course of the story, Jem and Scout slowly mature after specific events, and realize the reality of good and evil. Along the way, they meet Tom Robinson, a black man who is convicted of raping a white girl, who plays a major role in the story. Mrs. Dubose, a senile grumpy woman, shows what “real courage” is. Arthur Radley, known as Boo, is a recluse who is said to have tried to kill his father. As the events unfold, Jem and Scout are hit with the reality of racism and social inequality, but most of all, how good and evil play a role in people’s minds, and hearts.
As Robert Frost once said, "Love is an irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired." This is the desire that both Frankenstein’s monster and Porphyria’s lover yearn for. Frankenstein’s monster wishes someone to be his companion, friend, and lover. Porphyria’s lover needs to know that Porphyria to never leave him, even though that goes against the boundaries for social classes. Both the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and the poem Porphyria’s Lover by Robert Browning share the theme of the desire for eternal love and losing all morals when trying to obtain this affection.
Adulthood is the time in life when a person has reached maturity and is aware of the responsibilities that they have to take on. People’s lives are centered on their careers and relationships, leaving less time for much of anything else. Throughout many experiences we have all had the most astounding would have to most probably be the transition from adolescents to adults. There is no way that anyone can avoid it, if they want to progress on with their lives. “Time Stops for No one, Be you rich or poor...”.By reading the Catcher in the Rye and watching the movie Stand by me, the audience has been given this wisdom being able to experience it through the plots of both stories. However, the more profound realizations come from the recognition of the symbols in each story and how they relate to the main characters lives as a whole. In Catcher in the Rye and Stand by Me the main characters, Geordie LaChance (from Stand By Me), and Holden Caulfield (from Catcher in the Rye) are going through the change from adolescence to adulthood and many literary devices help them describe to the audience this change in a very personal perspective. These main points throughout the stories made by the use of theme, symbolism, and motif which are an important part of why J.D. Salinger, author of Catcher in the Rye, and Stephen King, who originally wrote the story for which Stand By Me is based on were so successful in capturing attention of people going through the change and giving them wisdom with the knowledge they provide within the stories.
Emerging Adulthood represents the period of development from late teens through their twenties, mainly focusing on the ages 18-25. This is the period which people start exploring and realizing the capabilities of their lives, which then helps them characterize as adults and no longer teenagers. This topic of psychology is compelling to me because it’s a stage that every adult has lived through, it’s interesting that we have all experienced it differently based on our life circumstances and demographics. Many theories have been developed around this, in regards to what experiences and milestones should occur at what age. This individual development narrative will explain some of these theories, including: Freud, Ericson and Piaget in relation to my own development from a neonate through to early adulthood. Along with these theories; social and cultural influences, as well as the nature vs nurture argument will be also be examined.

Adulthood has often been associated with independence. It serves as a turning point in life where one has to take responsibility for oneself and no longer being dependent on his or her family. Early adulthood, usually begins from late teens or early twenties and will last until the thirties (Santrock, 2013). Early adulthood revolves around changes and exploration while middle and late adulthood are more of stability. The transition from adolescence and adulthood differs among every individual. The onset of the transition is determined by many factors such as culture, family background, and the personality of the individual. Emerging adulthood (as cited in Santrock, 2014) is the term to describe the transition period from adolescence to adulthood.
A childhood is the delicate phase of every adolescent's life where they must mature into their own person, with their own responsibilities. Although every individual will eventually bloom with their own personality, morals, and perspectives, the education and values we learn and see along the way add to the fingers that mold. We begin when we are born, and are taken in by strangers. These priceless people show us love, and just how strong attachments can be. Family ties snare us in their loving webs and become the support network to catch us throughout our youthful falls. They are our first real pictures of people, and their actions and emotions immediately become examples.

The main difference for most should be the stress levels. Childhood is a less stressful time of life, as opposed to adulthood, because being an adult means obligated to pay bills, being responsible for everyone in their family, and lastly having the stress of a job.

The special moments such as learning how to ride a bike, or pulling out your teeth, and ding dong ditching your neighbor's house, are all memories that come to mind when thinking about childhood. Becoming an adult, also known as young adulthood, is a very crucial stage in one’s life. This is the climax of physical and health processes. This is the point in life when we make plans of our futures. It is the time when we think of what life will be like as an adult and make plans for the future. Most importantly, it is when we lay the starting point for developmental changes that we will undergo throughout our lives. An adult is a person who is fully grown or developed. Some people believe that you become an adult when you are 18 years old, other believe you are an adult when you can legally buy and consume alcohol, that is, at age 21 in the United States. Childhood and adulthood are alike in many ways. Growing, deciding, and learning take place throughout both stages. They differ, however, through honesty. Children are taught to always tell the truth and are punished for lying. Ironically, adults raise kids with a slanted truth. Some simply tell kids Santa is real to keep a child’s imagination. Others make up random explanations when toddlers asks “why” certain things happen. But some parents tell a clouded version of the truth to protect their kids from the world’s harsh endurances.
In 2001, there were 6,600 children surveyed to see if the expectations parents held for their kids had an effect on their future lives (Gillett) (BE10). Neal Halfon, a professor from the University of California, discovered that 97% of children were expected to go to college (Gillett) (BE11). This study shows the expectations that parents have for their children affects minors later on in life. In my childhood, I thought everything was fun and games and I was immature. As I grew older into adulthood, not only did I mature but I realized just how serious life is. Even though I didn’t have to make hardly any major decisions or take anything seriously in my childhood, I realize now that I have to be mature and make decisions on my own.
