I have participated in various groups through my adolescence and young adulthood, several of which had defined rights of passage. The first group I will address is my religion; I am an Episcopalian, and when I was 13 I became confirmed. In the Episcopal church there is a tendency to baptize children soon after birth, so it is a passive acceptance of religion. Once one has matured they have the option to choose the religious sacrament of confirmation. According to the Episcopal Church webpage, confirmation is defined as a mature commitment to Christ, and is affirmed by the bishop of the diocese. Confirmation is also described as the rite of seeking a theology. Therefor, it is considered as a right of passage of young adults throughout the Episcopal …show more content…
According to the MyJewishLearning webpage, preparations for this event often begin a year in advance with the candidate learning about the religion and families making preparations for those who are going to attend, and culminate in the candidate reading from the Torah, and delivering readings and prayers. After completing this, the young candidate is thrown a celebration as an acceptance into the Jewish religion. This compares with two of my examples, but not becoming a camp counselor. When you are confirmed you must learn about the history of the Christian religion, and go into in depth studies of various events, individuals, and traditions. This culminates in the Bishop recognizing you as confirmed, and acceptance into the Church community. In the Order of the Arrow you must prepare, however instead of a year, the preparation lasts for a day of intense work and learning values. You are received as a member of the Order of the Arrow in a celebration of those who have also achieved the honor. However, becoming a camp counselor differs from a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. You choose to become a counselor based on the idea that you can recreate a similar or better experience for future campers. There is also no celebration for becoming a counselor, you choose to take upon the responsibilities, without expecting commendation or
I would be an excellent choice to be a member of the National Junior Honor Society because I show service, leadership, character, and citizenship. It is an amazing opportunity anyone is lucky to have, and I am more than happy to accept it. I love helping people, being able to feel accomplished knowing I put a smile on someone’s face. Being in the National Junior Honor Society, I’d love to share my ideas and thoughts on how to make the world a better place.
I wish to take the time to give thanks for this impeccable opportunity in applying for the highly sought after National Honor Society. I have been looking forward to embarking on this journey since I heard about this organization freshman year. I am truly elated to be one of the many students that qualifies, as I know the standards of excellence and character that must be exemplified and met.
...e terminally ill. This right would allow them to leave this earth with dignity, save their families from financial ruin, and relieve them of insufferable pain. To give competent, terminally-ill adults this necessary right is to give them the autonomy to close the book on a life well-lived.
Introduction: A robbery has been committed. Lucky for the investigating officers, there’s a room full of eyewitnesses. One by one they are interviewed meticulously. The investigators are seasoned officers with a great deal of expertise in this field. All the right questions are asked and all details are recorded correctly.
I’m currently enrolled in Montgomery College, located in Maryland. Montgomery College is a community college. Community colleges are different in comparison to four-year universities. I had a choice of either getting a job or going to college. There are many reasons why I choose to go to Montgomery College. I chose to go to college because I want to pursue a degree in Psychology. When choosing a college, there are a lot of decisions to make and you have to choose what’s best in your interest. In today’s society, community colleges take up a lot of the students going to pursue their education. President Obama has proposed to make all community colleges free for all Americans and I agree with this statement. People have different perspectives
Intersectionality is a term used to describe a situation whereby an individual has multiple identities and as result, the person feels that he or she doesn’t belong to one community or another. Because of the many conflicts in an individual’s identities, he or she could be a victim of multiple threats of discrimination (Williams, 2017). The discrimination could be a result of race, gender, age, health and ethnicity among others. To give an example, a black transgender woman could be discriminated in the workplace because of being black and also because she is transgender. From an intersectionality perspective, the woman faces multiple threats of discrimination because of the overlapping identities of gender and race and therefore the transwoman faces a bigger struggle (Barber, 2017). Transwomen of color will most likely encounter prejudices in the form of homophobia, racism or sexism in many dimensions of their life. The perspective of intersectionality is not only applicable to women but it can also be applied to males. For example, a gay Latino man could be discriminated based on race because he is an immigrant into
Humans have established their own rights in society for many, many years now. However, because some humans differ from the norms that are built in society, they are shunned and denied their rights until they conform to society’s norms. There have been numerous groups of people who have been denied their rights in America. African Americans, immigrants, Native Americans, and gays have been isolated simply because that is the way they were born into this world and others do not find them “normal”. There is another group that has also been mistreated though: people who identify themselves as transgender.
Community colleges in California should offer two years of free education to students that are responsible. First, by making community college free for two years, struggling low income families can get a two year education at their local community college. By going to a free college people can save money for two years and transfer out to a better college with the money that they have saved. More student will switch from expensive colleges, and come to a less expensive college and acquire their Associate's degree. Next, some of the students will realize that they are going to graduate from an expensive college, and they are going to leave with a diploma and a huge debt in loans. Some people just need an Associate's Degree to get the job that they want and people can get that in two years. For example to become a police officer, people need an Associate's degree, and be twenty one years of age. Last, the crime in the cities will be reduced if community colleges would offer free education. Most people that are in the streets doing bad things are the ones who dropped out of high school because college was going to be too
Determination is a quality that makes a person continue to try, to do, or to achieve something that is difficult. It is a person’s overall drive to never give up and continue striving towards a desired goal. If I was asked to describe myself in one word, I would choose determined. Throughout my life I have had many experiences where my determination has helped me fight through tough times. By having this quality it has helped me to win a girls bowling IHSA state title, be an all-state athlete, and also continue my goals for my education. Determination is important to me because I need it to achieve my goals and reach my highest potential. Determination starts with the decision to go for the goal and to make the commitment to attain the goal. Determination is also the continuous driving force to overcome the obstacles on the way to the destination. It focuses the mind on the end result. It strengthens the will to carry on, to arrive at the destination.
All people have an experience of ¡°Rite of Passage¡± because it is necessary to be an adult. What is Rite of Passage? It means a ritual or ceremony signifying an event in a person's life indicative of a transition from one stage to another, as from adolescence to adulthood. In the story ¡°Barn Burning¡± by William Faulkner, Sarty, who was the son of barn burner- Abner Snopes, he experienced his Rite of Passage at the end of the story. Although his decision leads to his father¡¯s death, it helps him to independent from his father. I think he made the correct decision not only for himself, but also for his family and society.
The Honors Program is less about reward and more about the push for personal growth for myself. The last four years have shown to be a challenge, from being the first year student in Pre-calculus to being the junior who is aiming for a five on the AP test. I came from having mostly A’s, with few B’s, to being the student who earned A’s in every class. Personal motivation led me to this achievement. The Honors Program at CSU looks like a program to help me continue my journey of gaining knowledge. Being a member of this program would give my motivation to continue to strive for those higher grades. It is in my interest to be in this program to keep my performance in classes at the upper level. This program would allow me to focus on academics and strive for the best grades personally possible.
Throughout the years, I have had to deal with many trials, and challenges. Growing up BI-racial had a big affect on both my parents’ relationship, my relationship with my parents (which later on lead to their separation). There were cultural clashes within my household; my mother who was from Korea, and my father who was from Panama. I had learned to depend on myself, my friends, and most importantly, on God.
A lot of people don’t know that they have to do more with their education and get a good paying job. If you are declined a job that you know you will enjoy, but don 't have the college papers for a job can get disappointing. Some people are not inspired to go to college, and others can’t afford it. Other issues involved with the skills gap for jobs is the high requirements for that area of work, and peoples soft skills. High school is supposed to help you plan you for the real world, but not many classes help teach you the real world. This forms the skills gap in America, this stops people from being able to progress in today’s community.
The infrastructure of the Catholic faith consist of seven Sacraments which are as follows: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony. The sacrament of confirmation is the second of the three initiation sacraments, following Baptism, and preceding the Eucharist. As a woman on active duty in the United States Coast Guard I have benefited from numerous experiences that have molded and prepared me for my academic career. As a Health Services Technician, I have had the unique opportunity to treat patients and truly help my fellow shipmates. Seven years of experience has shown me how much listening to someone’s story is treatment alone. I have selected Sociology as my major because I have learned that understanding how we operate in society is an essential tool when making an effort to really understand someone and more importantly understanding what tools are necessary to succeed in a particular environment. Sociology is a specialty that will aid in a future career in medicine because treating the person is as crucial as treating a disease. A focus in Sociology expands our imaginations, broadening our capacity to feel compassion for our fellow man.
