Group Speech Analysis The purpose of our speech was to persuade classmates to join our dating, and friend making, website, Love @ 1st Site. I feel like we did a very good job at persuading them to become members of the site. We were able to show why they need the dating site, how it fulfills those needs, and finally a visualization of them with the product. As a result of most people was able to imagine their lives with the product, I think that they would be very likely to use our product, which was our main goal. Working with the group changed the speech making dynamic in a large way. When I am with myself I am able to format my outline a certain and more simple way. However, when working in a group the outline had to be more of a manuscript so it was clear to understand each point and the group was able to stay on the same page. Another difference was practicing. When going solo I could practice whenever I had a free space of time, but when in a group the practice time had to be planned out far in advance. During the presentation I tried hard to support my group members. When they were speaking I either look at them and or the audience. I sometimes looked at the PowerPoint too. I looked at the PowerPoint in order …show more content…
to provide emphasis on certain points. The last way I supported my group was by smiling at their jokes. When I was able to smile at their jokes I feel like it encouraged the audience to laugh, which makes the presentation easier. In my opinion, our group did a wonderful job implementing Monroe’s motivated sequence to our presentation.
We were able to cover all of the main points, from need to the call to action. The need was one of the biggest reasons Monroe’s worked for us. By showing the percentage of the class that struggles with face-to-face communication it showcased a huge need. Another reason Monroe’s was successful was because of our visualization. In the introduction and conclusion, we were able to allow them to visualize life with and without the product. By making the ending seen so much happier than the introduction, the audience had a positive perception of our product. The visualization was the biggest part of the Monroe sequence for our group, which allowed us to implement it successfully and persuade people to become fans of our
product. The delivery of this speech was not as good as that of my informative speech. I believe my speaking rate increased dramatically. Another area that regressed was eye contact. In this speech I was not as familiar and comfortable with the material so I wanted to ensure I spoke correctly, this caused me to look at my notecards too much. I did improve in one key aspect, word choice. I did not have any long moments where I was left searching for words in an awkward silence, not knowing what to say. There are quite a bit of changes I would make. The first being my speaking speed. In order to reach the time restraints more I need to slow down and speak clearer. When doing the intro my brain was working to fast and I said the wrong word twice times. The next change would be my eye contact. I read off my notecards too much, this took away from the presentation. The last change I would like to make is my stance. Throughout when I was speaking, and my group members, I was not able to stand still. I had too much nervous energy that made me move and sway a majority of the time. I need to find a way to cut down on this and release energy in a less negative way.
A fresh recruit to a discarded system is Mr. Jaime Escalante. In the film, Stand and Deliver, he had to adapt in his environment in James A. Garfield High School when, without prior notice, he was assigned to teach Mathematics instead of Computer. Quickly, as he set foot in the classroom, he had, most probably, a better discernment in human behavior. The reality of the high school he was employed in, he understood and tried to completely remove the universal gap between a traditional teacher and a disregarded student.
“Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” is an article written by world famous cellist, Yo-Yo Ma. In this article, Yo-Yo Ma identifies and discusses the role of arts in the world, stressing the point that these arts are a necessary element in the education system. Ma believes that the skills learned from these arts, are in fact, “essential” to the kind of balanced thinking that is needed in today’s world. Throughout this article, Yo-Yo Ma brilliantly portrays his thoughts, and gains the support of his audience through the use of ethos, logos, and pathos, while also maintaining a clear and concise stance.
The article I have chosen for my rhetorical analysis is #Gamergate Trolls Aren’t Ethics Crusaders; They’re a hate group because it seemed interesting. The reason I was drawn to this article was because of the title, I was interested to know what it meant. This article, written by Jennifer Allaway, is about gamergate, an online gaming community, and the hate they show towards others. Jennifer does research on sexism in videogames and how it correlates to the gamers that play these games. She was collecting data from different organizations by using a questionnaire that gathered information on diversity in the videogame community. When some gamergate members
Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). In Daniel’s research, among 75 Boston-area parents, those rich families value children’s healthy diet more than food wasted when children refused to accept those healthier but
Artificial intelligence should not be continued. Artificial intelligence has many benefits to your society, humans and AI will eventually begin to replace people’s jobs, they have no emotions, and they will outsmart humans so we will not be able to control them.
Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.
During the small group presentations there were a lot of good presentations, none of them were perfect, but still pretty good. This was very hard for me to chose my top 5, but this is what I think were the best starting from number five to number one.
The group couldn't seem to find time for us to meet and plan our presentation, the first and only time all group members were present to work on the presentation was on the morning of the presentation. We worked on it and at the time I believed we had agreed on our final product, I personally felt all the slides needed at this point was editing and final touches to make it visually appealing for the audience. I went online to the google presentation we were using as a group to prepare our presentation and was surprised to see a different layout, additional slides, and contents which were different from what we as a group had worked on and approved as the final work we were going to present. I confronted the group members as to the changes on the slides and we had a conflict of what our
For our final project in CA-125-03 Fund of Oral Communications we had to produce a group presentation. The people who consisted of my group are Ashton, Tobe, Braden, and myself. It did not take us long to come up with a topic, we thought about what many college students are involved that helps them increase their education and involvement. The topic we decided on was the student’s involvement in extracurricular activities. The importance of our speech was to inform my classmates on the importance of being involved throughout college and the impact it has on students and their futures. Through this reflection paper, I will inform you about the difficulties and the procedure we overcame in finalizing our group project.
Before starting the university my working with others was sometimes effective and sometimes not very effective depending on the people I worked with, on the topic or area we had to work on. In sixth form I got on well with everybody in my class and working with them was not difficult. For example once me and two other students had to make a PowerPoint presentation on smoking. We worked together in planning what information will be included in the PowerPoint and who will write about what, what other materials we will need such as leaflets and who will get them. So before creating the PowerPoint presentation we planned everything together. Once the PowerPoint was created we then decided the number of slides each of us will read and talk about. So here I worked with others effectively and our PowerPoint presentation was successful.
I have also learned about different types of audiences and speeches including persuasive, informative, entertaining and delivering special occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever I was making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so with confidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that capturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was therefore vital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values (Lucas, 2011).
In order to evaluate my role within the group, it is important to identify what makes a group. A group must firstly consist of more than three members, “Two members have personal relationships; with three or more there is a change in quality” of the personal relationship. (Bion 1961, p26) The group must have a common purpose or a goal in order to succeed. Having now completed my group work task, I can look back and reflect upon the process that my group went through to get to the presentation end point.
From the beginning, where we were unfamiliar with each other and became a team, my team and I had started to learn each other name and getting to know each other. Throughout each meeting, we slowly start to feel more comfortable and open minded with each other. Not only are we getting familiar with each other, each meeting that was held we progress of becoming an effective team member, we learn our strengths and weaknesses of everyone. During the meetings, we learn many concepts from the textbook, “Communicating in Small Groups: Principles and Practices” by Steven A. Beebe and John T. Masterson. We were able to learn different types of concept in the textbook and utilized it as a team to complete certain tasks. The three concepts that impacted my team and I are human
The overall energy from the students was pretty low. One thing that I found interesting was the pattern of communication. All of the students contributed to the conversation but they rarely interacted with each other. When they spoke, it was usually directed towards the adult members of the group rather than toward each other. Each student contributed differently to the session. The student who contributed the most was JR. TY also contributed some but mostly only when he was prompted. JD on the other hand, made minimal contributions to the group conversation.
The group speech we did is a prime example of good communication because everyone must agree on the content and how the presentation is going to go. Group projects can also be difficult when it comes to meeting times because everyone has their own busy schedule and finding a time where everyone can meet is extremely challenging.
