Self-Reflection Oral communication in all forms is one of the most important skills anyone can have to succeed in today’s workplace. Good oral communicators are generally more comfortable in difficult situations, which everyone will certainly encounter multiple times during their working and personal lives. For example, giving a speech can be very intimidating to someone without much experience in public speaking, as it is a very learned skill that takes lots of practice. After taking an oral communication course in college I now see why it is a required Liberal Arts Core course at UNI. Oral communication does not just deal with public speaking, it also deals with one on one conversations, group conversations, and many more.

I believe I have improved with not only public speaking skills but also in all the other categories within oral communication. Much of the source of my improvement has been what I have learned in the classroom.
The group speech we did is a prime example of good communication because everyone must agree on the content and how the presentation is going to go. Group projects can also be difficult when it comes to meeting times because everyone has their own busy schedule and finding a time where everyone can meet is extremely challenging.
In addition to the classroom, I have also grown as a communicator from getting to know all the new people I have met since starting at UNI this past August. Compared to high school, beginning college means getting involved in all kinds of new social situations, whether they are a one on one discussion with a professor or a group conversation with other friends or students. Specifically in regards to this class however, getting to know my classmates has helped me grow as a better communicator, particularly from all the interaction we have done in group activities. Being forced to lead in an activity in the classroom that requires you to interact with the class has been difficult a first, but I can feel it getting easier and I am becoming more comfortable as the semester has progressed. I improved on some things more than others but after looking back through all my speeches and watching most of them I notice an increase of confidence every time I was up in front of the classroom which means I was less and less nervous each time. In addition to being less nervous when speaking as I mentioned above, I also feel I improved a significant amount at writing my speeches. Going into this class I had no idea of all the different formats there are in public speaking and how much goes into the introduction of a speech. I did not even know what the acronym WIIFM meant for the longest time until someone asked what it was during class. I found it very interesting where you may not think at first you might not think building all the various parts of a speech are very important but once you understand how they are put together every little aspect of the speech matters. Though I had some strong points in my informative speech, I still feel there was a lot I could improve upon. I could not recognize any vocalized pauses but I noticed that at certain points of speech where I would transition from one point to another, I would push my glasses up. I don’t remember if this was because my glasses were actually slipping down or because I was nervous. Also, after watching my video, I found that in the beginning of the speech I was swaying a lot, but because I was standing behind the table it wasn’t that noticeable. Baseline Skills: I am still a bit timid when it comes to my verbal skills, but throughout my life, these skills have been slowly developing. Verbal communication is the most common form of communication. Verbal communication is used everyday, whether it is ordering a coffee in the morning, lunch at a restaurant, or telling the store clerk what size dress I need. Ever since I was a baby, I was taught to verbally communicate. It is one of the major stepping-stones in a person’s life. Through education, I have had to strengthen my skills for interviews and speeches. For example, I have had job interviews, volunteer interviews, and interviews to get into certain education programs like honor societies. In life, we rarely have the chance for a do-over, but I feel like returning to college is mine. Throughout high school, my grades were never above average and until about a couple of years ago I considered myself to be unintelligent. What I failed to see was my level of commitment. Once I began applying myself, the grades earned reflected that. This concept coincides to my public speaking ability. Many students, including myself, walk into a speech class thinking that it will be the Easy A of the semester and quite frankly I devoted a good amount of time and hard work to earn my A’s and B’s for this course. Overall, my public speaking growth in terms of listenability were influenced by the following: the strategy keys in correctly engaging the audience; the structure keys appropriate for a speech versus a paper; the support keys by continually engaging the audience; and finally the style keys by practicing the use of body language and reducing the verbal junk.

Some strengths that I use while giving a speech are the use of different pitches, the use of different volumes, the use of different facial expressions, and good posture. Some weaknesses that I have while giving a speech are the use of vocal fillers, the too fast of a rate at which I speak, the lack of eye contact, and the nervous movement from my body. Coming into speech class, I mentally and physically prepared myself for what was in store. I never really like giving speeches, especially impromptu speeches. Signing up for speech was hard for me to do because I absolutely did not want to take it and was considering not taking it in high school and wishing that I would never have to take it. My fears for COMM 101 was being judged. I am not really one to care about what people think about me, but something about public speaking gives me a fear that people will judge me if I stutter or not be able to complete a speech. When I first saw that I had to take Public Speaking, I was disappointed. I was uttering to myself, why I must take public speaking. I previously knew how to speak to people, because I speak to people every day, in passing, at work, and at home. Then analysis the syllabus for the course and apprehending that I had to speak in front of strangers9( classmates), oh no, I was not prepared for that.
Interpersonal communication is one of the significant skills while communicating with other individuals. It normally covers an extensive area and includes both verbal and non-verbal communication. Body language and facial expression may affect the accurateness of the message transmission directly. Interpersonal communication skills normally ensure that the message is sent and received correctly without any alteration thus improving the communication efficiency. Learning diverse aspects of interpersonal communication has greatly aided me in better understanding of what it consists. When communicating with the public, it is very important that the message is well thought out and that it speaks to a wide audience. Communicating with a vast audience can be challenging, because the message must speak to the audience. Some of the challenges communicating with a diverse audience are age, economic level, education and occupation, needs and concerns of the audience, culture, and rapport (Lehman, DuFrene, & Walker, 2016). In this particular situation, the district manager of a movie theatre must address the media about a recent bed bug problem at the theatre. I feel that obtaining good speech skills can be vital to resolving workplace issues. Becoming more direct and getting straight to the point with my speech has impacted my experiences in increase my ability of not losing my listeners interest and avoiding improper articulations by speaking or communicating clearly and effectively to obtain a good impression of his or her listener because a person only gets one time to make a first impression.
