The strategies employers offered to help employees achieve work-life balance varied dependent on the type of company and the resources available. Some companies have policies designed to encourage the balance, while others have yet to take action. Six strategies employers should consider are supportive work cultures, organizational leave, flexible work arrangements, work from home, on-site childcare, and technology use.
Work culture. Companies are able to retain trained employees through work cultures that are supportive of work-life balance. For instance, many women are concerned that they will find themselves on the outside of the workplace social circle or overlooked for a promotion because they have decided to start a family. Because of this, pregnant and new mothers may choose to leave the workforce if they feel excluded from the group or feel torn between work and life responsibilities. Slaughter (2012)

High commitment employment politics and executive positions are particularly challenging (Seierstad & Kirton, 2015; Slaughter, 2012). However, even with high commitment positions, utilizing work-life balance strategies are not entirely impossible. According to Kossek et al. (2015), “Many high-level professional jobs where most work is done by voice or online can allow employees to modify their schedules or work from home” (p. 18). Furthermore, in a study conducted by Seierstad and Kirton (2015), the results suggest there may certain times of the year, such as summer break, when flexible working hours are easier to negotiate. Some employees may be able to take advantage of every work-life balance strategy; other positions may only be able to take advantage of a few options. This should not deter employers from offering a variety of options to meet the needs of their employee
The inability to achieve “work-life balance” has become a major focus for workplace equality activists. When this topic is brought about it is primarily used to describe how woman cannot have a work and home life but instead are forced to choose. Richard Dorment took on this point of interest from a different perspective in his article “Why Men Still Can’t Have It All” published with esquire. Going against the normal trend he describes how women are not the only ones put into the same sacrificial situations, but instead that men and women alike struggle to balance work and home. Previous generations have a strong belief of keeping work and home life separate; that work is for work and home is for play (Rampell, 2011, para 21). Today’s professionals do not seem to abide by similar beliefs, constantly crossing the borders of one into the other. While many recognize this as an issue that could result in employees being less productive, it has actually resulted in them accepting that their work may run late into the evening or even into the weekend. I agree with this completely in that I grew up being taught that business is business and personal is personal; you leave your home life at the door. But now times have changed, and my weekends are no longer dedicated to my home life, but for work, because I attend classes during the week. Also, in my line of work in the Allied Health industry, it is a requirement to work off hours. There was a general shift in the nature of the common everyday american household and a two income household was slowly but surely becoming the new reality of american life.

With this source, they “investigated whether work-family conflict is prospectively related to adjustments in work schedules… in this relation”. (Jansen) They also wanted to prevent work- family conflict. They also know that balancing work and family is a challenge in today’s society for individuals. Consequences associated with work and family “job burnouts, psychological distress, depression, life dissatisfaction, elevated need for recovery from work, prolonged fatigue, and increased sickness absence”. (Jansen) The companies are starting to notices that employees are looking for other jobs that support them balance their work and family. Jansen used questionnaires to figure out the work-family conflict investigation. Each questionnaire was use with different types of working people. For example, the part-time and full-time workers. The results for the work-family conflict, “employees might adjust their working time arrangement to better reconcile work and family life…” (Jansen) They are considering their next research on the adjustments to “result in an improved work-family balance, improved health outcomes, and ultimately whether these adjustments prevent workers from leaving the labor force early.” (Jansen)
It may seem impossible to juggle many things in life at one time; such as trying to get all the assignments completed, and studying done in a short amount of time to make it to work on time. If that was not stressful enough there is also the pressure of making sure to spend time with family. It can be extra stressful when someone has a very big and close family, and a variety of events are to be attended, making sure assignment are completed in order to join the family. Working two jobs and going to college all at the same time can be a struggle. College is place to become independent, responsible, and to figure out what you want to do in life. The same goes for Michael Turone. He described college “Fun, but hard at the same time.” Graduate at the College of DuPage with an Associate's Degree, he now does what he likes to do for a living. Some people may think that college is easy and it only further education but this was not the case for Michael.

Steger, Lori Deschene, and Keven wood describe what the joy of meaningful is to them.Life is what you make of it and it’s and up to you to decide what you will get out of it. Some people may work eight hour shifts Monday through Friday miserable, exhausted, depressed, unhappy, and under a lot of pressure and stress from their jobs. Others may do the same, similar, or different jobs being comfortable, happy with life, and pleased with their job position. Your job should be one of the most important things to you because you are there on average forty hours a week and most of your time is spent there. It should be important that you enjoy what you do because it is practically your second home. Meaningful work is a job you enjoy doing, are compassionate about, never tired of, and do for the fulfillment of yourself , it is important to success because if one enjoys what they do opportunities in their career path will only expand.
What do people think about their life purpose? Most of us think about life that is studying hard in order to get a wonderful job, working hard, and getting married. They have dreamed of one day having an eternal vacation for themselves and not having to work anymore. The traditional people around the world consider that overworking is an essential condition for the early stage of their life. Especially in most of Asian countries, the average workweek is 48 hours. According to the fulltime employment, people work 35 to 40 hours per week to be defined as full-time. If more than that number, that should be considered overworking. Overworking is an important issue because that can lead to some serious consequences. Thus, we should consider work-life balance more seriously.
The workplace in general is an essential part of a person’s life to make a living. People will work over a third of their life to fulfil needs such as bill, groceries, and personal needs. For majority of the population, there isn’t much of a problem when they are at work; their manager treats everyone fairly, pay rate is adequate, and they keep their private and public work separate from each other. According to Holt Physical science, work is the “transfer of energy to a body by the application of a force that causes the body to move in the direction of the force” (Holt 378). Work is equal to force multiplied by distance, meaning that in order to do work something has to move. Energy is “the capacity to do work” (Holt 73). Energy is transferred or transformed whenever work is done. Work requires an object to experience a change in position or motion but energy can be present even when nothing appears to be happening. Both work and energy are measured in Joules.

Being a manager, you face several challenges in encouraging your employees in today’s work place. The top three challenges I believe to be the toughest challenge managers face is getting to know their employees, diversity, and job enhancement, job enrichment, and career goals. These were not challenge managers encountered in the workforce fifty years ago. Getting to know your employee is the most important challenge a manager faces because there are so many of them. In today’s workforce, managers encounter not only one gender of workers, but two. Everyone has different sexual orientations and different ethnicities, races, and religion, which are now allowed no matter whom you are, but were not allowed fifty years ago. Fifty years ago, the workforce was mainly men who were Caucasian. Lastly, today’s workforce has to deal with employees who seek to achieve job enhancement, job enrichment, and career goals. Motivating employees in the workforce will significantly advance how hard they work.
