Workplace stress can be defined as the negative reaction of people to the environment and social life. There are different types of stress and its stressors we face in our daily lives. A huge source of stress comes from the workplace. It is caused by work and workload. Many employees become victim of the stress in the workplace both physically and mentally. This is underlying the workplace stress. This essay will discuss internal and external stress. Firstly, internal stress comes from inside of us. In other word, the stress harms us mentally, and our body’s ability to response to it. Sekimoto (2008) suggests that internal stress is everywhere around us. Signs of this stress usually may include feeling down, thinking about detrimental things, sulkiness, cry without reasons, pessimism, and homesick. Other reasons of internal stress are; employee doesn’t satisfy with his/her work, workload, working long hours, lack of knowledge for the task at hand, and undealt interpersonal conflict at work. For example: if employee didn’t do something good enough, boss will argue for it or have worse relationship with colleagues because of it, this gives damaging things for that employee. It is not good because he/she meets internal stress because of that issue and then maybe he/she will self-murder. Also, external stress comes from outside of our bodies. The reasons are pollution, our job, financial worries, being too busy, relationship difficulties, meet difficulties, poor working environment, poor career development, problems at home, and other outside factors. All of these factors are beginner of external stress in the workplace. Stress triggers are different for different people. Although we would like to avoid stress, it is impossible. We need stress in our lives in order to stay alive and help us make quick decisions in life or death situations. Stress can actually be a good thing such as eustress, stress that is good or produces a positive outcome. When a person experiences stress it causes one of two reactions, fight or flight, which allows us to make the decision to either accept the situation or run away. According to Kreitner and Kinicki , “Physiologically, this stress response is a biochemical “passing gear” involving hormonal changes that mobilize the body for extraordinary demands” ( p.550). The main point is we cannot avoid stress; stress is good for us to a certain extent. Our efforts need to be aimed at managing stress and learning to live with and embrace it.

The workplace in general is an essential part of a person’s life to make a living. People will work over a third of their life to fulfil needs such as bill, groceries, and personal needs. For majority of the population, there isn’t much of a problem when they are at work; their manager treats everyone fairly, pay rate is adequate, and they keep their private and public work separate from each other. The rest of the population unfortunately don’t have this fortune. Pay rates vary among colleagues, managers aren’t effective leaders, and the private life might become public in the workforce. To effectively combat job stress and develop a comprehensive stress management program, organizations must be cognizant of several areas that may be contributing factors to an employee’s stress level. Internally, organizations should review the employee’s workload and ensure that they have the necessary skills to complete the tasks they are expected to complete (Ornelas & Kleiner, 2003). They must also work to “motivate, challenge and take full advantage of the employee’s skills and abilities” (Ornelas & Kleiner, 2003). Employee’s job stress can also be decreased by allowing them take an active part in decisions, creating an atmosphere that facilitates a support network, and offering flexibility in their schedules that allows them to address responsibilities outside the workplace (Ornelas & Kleiner, 2003).
Changes, such as sudden trauma, several big crises, or many small daily hassles, cause stress. Intense stress years earlier, especially in childhood, can predispose us to over-react to current stress. Events, such as barriers and conflicts that prevent the changes and goals we want, create stress. Having little control over our lives, e.g. being "on the assembly line" instead of the boss, contrary to popular belief, often increases stress and illness. Many environmental factors, including excessive or impossible demands, noise, boring or lonely work, stupid rules, unpleasant people, etc., cause stress. Conflicts in our interpersonal relationships cause stress directly and can eventually cause anxieties and emotional disorders.
