Work/life balance and performance
Unhealthy balance leads to decreased performance at work. Long hours do not allow for enough rest, which leads to being less energetic the next day and not as productive. When the hours are regular, and the person has enough time to spend away from work rejuvenating they are well rested and ready to tackle a new day (Bakker & Costa, 2014). With more energy one can be more productive and more efficient at their jobs. Well rested person is less likely to make mistakes and is more attentive to detail. That allows to do the task correctly in the first place instead of needing to go back and fix it later.
Work/life balance practices improve organizational performance, not just the individual but the company as
Worker who identifies with his or her company is more likely to take part of any initiative the company has. They feel proud and loyal to their organization. This leads to increase performance out of feeling affective and committed to their work place.
Work/life balance and satisfaction
Unhealthy work/life balance leads to dissatisfaction with work, oneself, or family. Unhappy worker is less likely to put all his effort into the job which leads to extended time for projects needed to be finished (McNamara, Pitt-Catsouphes, Matz-Costa, Brown, & Valcour, 2013). Being dissatisfied in one area affects the mood for all three. In a situation when one becomes unhappy and dissatisfied in all those areas it leads to further dissatisfaction.
Healthy work/life balance sets the mood for all other areas of life as well. Being happy and satisfied in one area helps to keep the other two in a better state (Ferguson, Carlson, Zivnuska, & Whitten, 2012). A person who is happy will be putting more effort into their job as well as finally and lastly will also be happier with themselves. What is misunderstood is that spending more time at work loosens the ties at home, the paycheck, as important as it is, it does not replace time spend together. Paying too much attention to one affects the other negatively.
When family and work are in balance, a person is healthier, happy and more productive Nicholas and McDowall (2012) said that balance does not mean one spends exactly the same time in both scenarios. It rather means that it is the amount that are comfortable for the individual at a time. Needs can change with time so the work/life balance is not set once and for all but rather it is a growing, always evolving, and adjusting
