As if being the father of two children and a dedicated husband were not enough, Victor Terhune has to balance his family life with his job. Victor currently works as a Technical representative for the sales department at Weastec in Dublin, Ohio. Though work holds him back from doing some of the things that he would like to be doing, like spending more time with his wife and sons, this is a common theme for many workers today in a relationship with their desire to be with their families. Victor strives to get resolution to this by making time by driving home right after work and focusing on that quality time with his family.
The inability to achieve “work-life balance” has become a major focus for workplace equality activists. When this topic is brought about it is primarily used to describe how woman cannot have a work and home life but instead are forced to choose. Richard Dorment took on this point of interest from a different perspective in his article “Why Men Still Can’t Have It All” published with esquire. Going against the normal trend he describes how women are not the only ones put into the same sacrificial situations, but instead that men and women alike struggle to balance work and home. Dorment opens up by saying “And the truth is as shocking as it is obvious: No one can have it all.” In doing so Richard Dorment throws out the notion that one
Many people love their jobs and the salary that comes with it, but is it worth the time of not seeing your family? Time management and balancing work life with your personal life, along with little to no stress should be improved today. Previous generations have a strong belief of keeping work and home life separate; that work is for work and home is for play (Rampell, 2011, para 21). Today’s professionals do not seem to abide by similar beliefs, constantly crossing the borders of one into the other. While many recognize this as an issue that could result in employees being less productive, it has actually resulted in them accepting that their work may run late into the evening or even into the weekend. I agree with this completely in that I grew up being taught that business is business and personal is personal; you leave your home life at the door. But now times have changed, and my weekends are no longer dedicated to my home life, but for work, because I attend classes during the week. Also, in my line of work in the Allied Health industry, it is a requirement to work off hours. Long gone are the days of working nine to five, Monday through Friday; technology and the demand of wanting affairs done and done as soon as possible, has made it so the “work week” is now 24-7. “Jon Della Volpe, the director of polling at Harvard Institute of Politics, said, ‘Some experts also believe that today’s young people are better at quickly switching from one task to another, given their exposure to so many stimuli during their childhood and adolescence’” (Rampbell,
An untold amount of people tear apart at the seams because the tension is too much. The rest of the people have different versions of the same problem. People try to juggle work and family, but find themselves in a state of confusion where priorities become blurred. Is getting a high salary more important than having dinner with family?
Through life, one must make choices in their personal and professional lives in order to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Through the plays Bull, Waste, Little Eyolf, The Homecoming, and the musical Kinky Boots, it is evident that creating a distinction between one’s personal and one’s professional life is essential to living a healthy life. When one’s personal life and professional life overlap completely, trouble ensues.
In many instances, dual-earner families find difficulty maintaining a satisfying marriage due to time constraints and conflicts between their job and family. As a result, it is imperative that couples communicate their values, goals, and priorities, and revisit them frequently. Additionally, with more families being forced into becoming dual-earner families, government officials must be proactive and establish programs that help employees balance their careers with their family. With dual-earner families here to stay, couples must set aside their differences to provide themselves with sufficient economic
Workaholics – people, who have a compulsive and unrelenting need to work (www.dictionary.com) – appear more and more among the working people of United States and other developed countries. At first glance, workaholics do not seem to be such a problem for industry and society as a whole. But in spite of all devotion to their work the workaholic will not be as valuable as a normal worker. Workaholics do not think about anything else except work that can cause severe health problems and can cause problems on their work. All that causes a reduction of economic profit for the company.
Take more of a control back from the negativity that was taking away from me while trying to get where I need to be. Seek more helpful advice and a mentor that has had previous experience in what I am trying to do and can help guide me while also guiding myself in the direction I am heading towards. My goals for my profession is to be the best that I can be, succeed, and do everything and more than I know I can do.
...ees are expected to appreciate the work of the experts and should show enthusiasm when facing such a challenge. From the research it is evident that this is a challenge that many people face (Gambles, Lewis, & Rapoport, 2006). All employees who are facing this type of a challenge should ensure that they balance their lives. If it is difficult to do so, they should seek help from specialists who will help them solve their problems. This is a problem that many people have faced. If a person is faced with it, they should not feel that they have a problem. They should be aware that many people have been through the same situations and they were able to balance both lives. It can be possible if a person is willing and has created interest to balance both lives. This is because it is a culture and an ethical recommendation for a person to be able to balance both lives.
As large numbers of married couples work outside the home and have parenting responsibilities, their multiple roles have grown. Therefore, the combination of work and family roles generates a spillover of stress in these two areas. Balancing work and family is both a female and male issue. The demands of work pull them away from family intimacy, while the demands of family pull them in. Either extreme can be problematic for individuals and their intimate relationships.

I have the ability to balance work and time to relax. It is very important to me that I do what I love and love what I do. When an individual is doing what they are meant to do, they realize their potential and purpose in life. I feel that this correlates to me in my life now, because I chose to come to Limestone to play softball and get an education as a Health Care Administrator. I am satisfied everyday in both of these important goals and reward myself for the accomplishments that I achieve to reach those goals. I one-day hope to contribute my skills and talents to my work that will be rewarding to me and people I work for. I hope to attain job satisfaction and many other important components needed for my path to becoming successful in the
As it was noted above, the number of working mothers in the U. S. during the past thirty years increased dramatically and there are no signs of decrease in this number in the near future. There are many different reasons for mothers to choose employment rather than staying at home. Some mothers make conscious choice to be employed. In other words there is no restrictions on type of employment or amount of income it brings. In this case, satisfaction and self-fulfillment from job will have positive effect on how these mothers raise their children. However, some of the mothers are forced in to being employed due to being the only provider to the family, single parent or other consequences. The forced maternal employment causes rise in the level of mother’s stress and has negative influence on quality time that mother spends with children. Nevertheless, no matter what is the reason for employment, all of the working mothers face a problem when it comes to balance work and family life. Having to balance work and family life is complex problem and parents can use all the help they can get to solve it. It is one of the society’s responsibilities to provide help to families in raising children into adequate adults. As a result, there is a need for changes in society in order to accommodate recent changes in family structure due to increase in maternal employment.
We all spend a large portion of our week at work and sometimes that amount of time can skew our priorities. However, at the end of the day it is family that is really important. Early in my career the perception was that in order to get ahead you had to be the person putting in the most hours. I would often come in early and stay late to show my commitment. However, over time this perception has changed and I have found that it is not true that putting in the most hours makes you the best employee. The birth of my son six years ago really changed my perceptions and priorities. When my husband and I were both focused on our careers it was easy to get in the pattern of working long hours, but once you have a child at home you have a very good reason to not spend every waking hour working. I have discovered the true importance of work life balance and contrary to my old beliefs I think it has actually made me a better employee. I am motivated to do my best when I am at work, while working very efficiently and with a purpose. I am much happier in general with the balance and my family is also happy. This value will continue to be of great importance to me for the remainder of my career. I think it also makes me a more compassionate and empathetic leader and my employees respect my values and want to also do their best while they are at
