Margaret Fuller once said “Today a reader,Tomorrow a leader.” How much you read and write today will somehow affect your future job, salary, or even your family. Although math, science, and history are important, the importance of reading and writing tops all because of the way it allows us to communicate with others, broaden our minds, and they way it challenges us to increase our ability to understand different readings and writings. Some things are easier to remember and some things are easier to forget. In third grade, in the middle of class, I got called on to read a paragraph. Looking lost at the paper, I began to stutter, and couldn’t pronounce any of the words. As the room filled with the sound of my classmates laughing at me, I felt …show more content…
When I got my test back, I made good on every subject except writing. Not getting to go with all my friends, because of making bad, really made me hate writing. I began to doubt my ability and the ideas I wrote about. Perhaps because of the lack of seriousness, I began to struggle even more in English. A feeling of sorrow overcame me every time I would get one of my essay grades back. This caused me to realize just how important writing is. As I fell behind more and more in english, I would have to meet with a tutor. After months of working hard on improving to write better, I started to feel like I was caught up to everyone in my grade again. This was very important to me not only did learning how to write better help my grades, but It also helped me understand the english language more. Once I realized how much writing helps me in my daily life, English felt like more than just a class I was forced to take every …show more content…
I was introduced to having to write essays on certain books or poems. My english teacher would assign our class a book to read and after we read it, we were required to write an essay on it. At first, I thought I could just skip reading the book and write a paper on it anyways. After I got my first essay grade back, I found out this technique was not good enough. I didn’t have any details or truly know anything about the characters; therefore, my essay lacked small important information that I had missed out on. This caused me to realize I really would need to take the time to start reading any required books because reading is important when it comes to writing based on comprehension. When our next book and essay assignment came, I decided to actually read the book in order to see how much better I could make on my essay. I do not usually enjoy reading but I stuck through it and read “ The Grapes of Wrath.” This time our teacher gave us a in class essay, which we had never done before. If I had not read the book, I would have failed it because it was solely off your own comprehension of the book. I felt so accomplished knowing I could fully answer the essay question. Reading and writing are equally important because in order to be successful in one of the subjects, you must be skilled in the
As time goes by, I noticed how reading and writing became one of my weaknesses. Having an assignment readings and writing an essay about it was one of the things I don’t like doing. I am not sure if there are any valid reason on why I don’t like it but all I know is there is always a point where I end up getting stuck because I do not know what else to say. Also, reading gets deeper and some of the words are hard to understand especially when some of the readings use metaphors. However, in every essay I turned in, I always look forward on all of my teacher’s comments because I always want to know what else I am missing, what else to say, and how to improve it. I guess in this case, Sherman Alexie and I are opposite towards our view on writing but we are the alike on the view of learning and improving.
Throughout my years in high school I have never been the best at writing. I have struggled and failed numerous times and I just didn 't think I would ever get any better when it came down to writing in my English classes. I always had to ask my parents to help me comprehend words, phrases and also how to pronounce certain words. For example my junior year of high school it was time to prepare ourselves for the SAT and ACT testing which are standardized tests that every student must take if they want to further their education in college. When I took the test for the first time I felt like I failed miserable because my score was so low. I received a 14 my very first time taking the ACT, and my lowest score was in reading. I was so embarrassed
I have never liked writing; I always thought it was a waste of time. It was a great therapy but I never found academic writing to be useful just tedious. Only ever writing when I had too made it harder for my writing skills to grow or improve in any way. I have not taken an English class since the 10th grade, even then I never gave it much effort, just doing what I had to so I could pass the class. Then I jump in to College English 1010, I feel like I do well in all other subjects but this one. English is my worst nightmare.
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
Growing up in working class family, my mom worked all the time for the living of a big family with five kids, and my dad was in re-education camp because of his association with U.S. government before 1975. My grandma was my primary guardian. “Go to study, go to read your books, read anything you like to read if you want to have a better life,” my grandma kept bouncing that phrase in my childhood. It becomes the sole rule for me to have better future. I become curious and wonder what the inside of reading and write can make my life difference. In my old days, there was no computer, no laptop, no phone…etc, to play or to spend time with, other than books. I had no other choice than read, and read and tended to dig deep in science books, math books, and chemistry books. I tended to interest in how the problem was solved. I even used my saving money to buy my own math books to read more problems and how to solve the problem. I remembered that I ended up reading the same math book as my seventh grade teacher. She used to throw the challenge questions on every quiz to pick out the brighter student. There was few students know how to solve those challenge questions. I was the one who fortunately nailed it every single time. My passion and my logic for reading and writing came to me through that experience, and also through my grandma and my mom who plant the seed in me, who want their kids to have happy and better life than they were. In my own dictionary, literacy is not just the ability to read and write, it is a strong foundation to build up the knowledge to have better life, to become who I am today.
Have you ever done something and felt so confident about it and thought that you would do well but it turns out that, but it ends up that the result you would get is not what you got? I did I actually had to go through the whole process of getting better, I learned to grow gradually as a writer. When I first started writing wrote I earned As and Bs. Then I started the started the summer bridge program here at Washington Adventist University and found out that writing in High School is a lot different from college. It is even harder to write an essay because you have to be sure to add in enough details based on the topic and right when you think you are done you must check on grammarly to revise your essay and make sure you check your work. Or even the writing center but because it was a summer program so the writing center was not open at the moment. When I received my papers I learned how not
The halt of acknowledging that my skills weren’t what I thought they were to be as I had such a high standard for myself, I believe I became too comfortable with my writing in that I ignored the changes I needed to make. The push from my AP teacher to see what I was doing wrong and how to correct it, gave me what I required to develop proficiency. My main influences that majorly impacted my writing went from thinking I was the best to learning I wasn’t the best and moving past that to self improvement. Positive and negative experiences both affect you in ways that will always be for the better, because you learn from your mistakes and you can further your progress. Always trying your best and not being afraid of change will promote self improvement which will always help your growth in writing, and as a
English is a hard language to learn, for there are numerous elements of effective usage and writing. Many people, including me, struggle in writing because of a lack of knowledge. Since middle school, English was not a strong suit of mine. I struggled with the simplest of tasks often taking a considerably longer time to complete a task than the other students. Unmotivated teachers and a lack of interest resulted in remedial writing skills. To put it simply, I had little confidence in my writing and I dreaded taking the class because of the writing involved. In spite of my fears, I took the course and I was able to perfect and challenge my mediocre writing skills.
Writing and reading skills are important in my life and in many other lives too. What caught my attention was that learning new vocabulary from books can improve writing and speaking skills. This could help people clearly state what they want to say and can impress others that will have your attention. Applying for a job, writing an essay, and speaking in a debate are examples that could be contributed by a book or something that you’ve read. Reading is essential in our lives and we should read every single day to increase our knowledge and be better at writing, speaking,
I personally do not enjoy writing like most people would feel about reading a dictionary. I am cautiously treading water with every word I type. I have always found writing to be a tedious process. I have never found ease in wording something the way I want to; therefore, it usually sounds so much better in my head. I’ve never considered myself to be comfortable with writing in general. For example, I always had a hard time telling if I needed a comma in a sentence or not. Sometimes it was obvious, but it seems more confusing most of the time.
Ever since I was knee-high to a grasshopper I have known what I want to do and who I plan to be. An author is someone who manipulates words, adds their voice, and uses their imagination to create characters, worlds, and plots. An author of fiction is exactly what I want to be and who I have worked on to become. Thus, I have decided that when I am out of Union County Early College (SPCC), I would like to major in English and minor in Creative Writing. I have a lot to learn and I'm looking forward to mastering my future profession eventually (though I doubt I will ever master all there is to know about the written word).
Man's Relationship with Nature in Hughes and Wordsworth's Poetry Concentrating on one Poem by each Poet, Compare and Contrast the ways in which Hughes and Wordsworth Present Man’s Relationship with Nature Both Hughes and Wordsworth have beliefs about man’s relationship with nature, but I feel that they see the relationship between the two in different ways. Hughes has a more pessimistic and negative approach, feeling that nature must protect herself from man’s destructive nature, while Wordsworth believes that nature is a teacher and nurtures you. Wordsworth uses a more optimistic and positive approach in his poetry. Wordsworth sees nature in a romantic and spiritual sense that protects and is constantly feeding and inspiring man’s mind and helping it to grow. On the other hand Hughes sees man as interfering and destructive towards nature and is excluded from its harmony.
Anyone can tell stories, but writing them is an entirely different beast. Technically, anyone can write one too, but to write something good, something worthwhile is the real challenge. The process of putting words on paper has proven to be one of the hardest yet most gratifying pastimes I’ve ever engaged in. It’ll break you (at this point, I’m certain it’ll be my undoing). It’ll grind you down to a nervous wreck.
During my time in high school I have been assigned many, many papers and writing assignments. Some have been hard, some have been easy. Some have been long, some short. Some purposeful, and others, pointless. Some writing assignments have not come especially easy for me.
Reading – we do it every day. In almost every aspect of our lives and often take it for granted. Reading is essential for human communication and increasing knowledge. However, because reading is so important even a small change can have a significantly large impact on our modern society. We are currently in a midst of a cultural revolution. In which the printed word is being transformed by the digital.
