During my time in high school I have been assigned many, many papers and writing assignments. Some have been hard, some have been easy. Some have been long, some short. Some purposeful, and others, pointless. Some writing assignments have not come especially easy for me. Assignments such as research papers, book reports, and autobiographies are all areas of writing that I struggle with. But a few areas of writing have always been easier for me.
Short stories have always been fun for me to write. And I think because I enjoy them, I am better at writing short stories than the other types of writing I mentioned earlier. I don’t know why, but I have always thoroughly enjoyed writing short stories in first person. I love writing stories as though I was there. As if such events actually occurred and I had a crucial role to play. For some reason, this form of writing feels more like art to me than homework.

Although a good poem takes a lot of time and a lot of revision, I really enjoy poetry because, like short stories, a poem is more of a work of art. It is something to be appreciated. To me, there is more to be learned from a good poem then from a good essay. Because a poem is a reflection of the heart of the poet. Some may find a factual essay to be of more value than a poem but I learn far more from people than I do from claims and statistics. I think that is why I am better at writing poetry. It is easier for me to find things inside of me to write
The poems make for a simple addition to the narrative and allows for a much more meaningful experience for a reader and makes for a much more engrossing story, thus adding to the experience as a whole.
Writing has never been my strong suit. I’ve always been more of a math girl. I just feel math comes easier to me, because in math there is one solution to a problem. It would be less frustrating for me if there was a clear formula in writing a perfect essay. I feel when assigned an essay I freak out on how to make it seem smart enough and clean it up enough to at least a “B” essay because I know getting that “A” is a stretch. The most frustrating aspects of writing for me are writing the hook, the thesis statement, and being my own worst critic.
My experience with writing in English class has mainly been a good one. Since I began writing essays in Elementary school I have been a decent writer. I am always working on my writing skills to become a better writer; there will always be room for improvement. Every English class I have taken has taught me new techniques, which helped to strengthen my previous writing abilities, as well as hone newly learned skills. Some of the aspects of my writing experience that I am going to write about are my favorite kind of writing assignments, my least favorite kind of writing assignments, my strengths and weaknesses as a writer, and my expectations for Freshman English.
Writing has never been one of my strong suits. During my time in the military I felt that I had improved my writing skills to a competent level. However, when faced with the challenges of academic writing I found that the style I was used to was quite different. Therefore, entering this composition course provided several challenges for me. With my previous experience the writing was short, concise, and did not require a focus on sentence structure or punctuation very much. Now, I feel as though I have come a long way in my ability to compose an essay and not just write information down in a jumble. This experience has built my confidence in my ability to assist my children when they ask me for help with their writing now also. Overall,
“Poetry is just evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash” (quotegarden). Leonard Cohen spoke these words. Poetry has a subtle way of telling a novels length story in a few short lines. Poetry has the power to explain so much with few words, and gives it first-rate meaning, that makes one step back and evaluate their lives and how a poem relates to them. It makes one think, and that is the beauty of it.
One of my oldest writing memories is narrating my essays to my mother, who would type them for me and help me to correct any grammar mistakes or awkwardly worded passages. To some this may have seemed like a cheating way of doing my essays. I always got excellent grades on them and my teachers praised my writing skills. I used to feel bad, should I tell them that my mom helped me? But looking back, I think that 's what helped me to impro writing skills and learn to love the written word. Part of the reason for having her help me, was that she could type very fast, and as I would dictate my essay, I would have new ideas and she could type them much faster than I could get them on the paper, which helped me to let myself welcome new ideas even
Because there are many ways to write poetry, there is no such thing as a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ poem. Poetry is a form of expression, its’ finished product is like a piece of artwork thats’ picture is painted with words of choice. A poem can be written in any style or form- a rant, a letter, a story or a song; but what makes a poem, a poem? No matter what type of writing style is used, the poem must include a theme; the purpose of the poem or the message that the author tries conveying to teach us a lesson about life, and a subject; the overall topic or ideas that are incorporated in the text. Although typical one-stanza poems may not consist of much detail, they give a straightforward message which makes it strong enough to stand alone.
While sometimes a struggle, I would try my best to complete my assignments timely and completely. However, my written assignments have helped me to improve more than reading from the textbook. According to my paper grades in comparison to my test grades, I have noted that my overall writing and revising improvement is due to practice, rather than observation. This has also brought to my mind that it is personally more challenging for me to start a written piece than it is to revise. Writing my analysis paper was extremely difficult, as every topic I found seemed rather boring.
In general, the overall art of writing is more difficult and complex than it is in any term easy. The skills needed to develop a good writing piece is shaped by many aspects that frequently take a while to adapt to. Over the course of middle school, I have written many various essays and papers on diverse subjects. As a writer, I have improved over time due to my excelled learning in different classes. In my writing, it is evident that I have many strengths along with areas that need growth.
When we first started the poetry unit, I felt that I would hate reading and creating poetry. When I heard we had to read poetry I was very disappointed. Every other year we did poetry units, I hated it. I hated every part of it. I dreaded reading poetry and answering the questions. I mostly felt this way because I am a factual person. I always have to have one right answer. I do not like when there are more than one answer choices that are correct. Poetry always has more than one interpretation. This year, however, hearing poetry and writing my own poetry has changed my opinion on poetry. Although I still hate answering questions on the poems I love to listen to poetry and write my own poetry. But, even when you read the poems that I write they are very straightforward and there are usually no other ways to interpret it.
I personally do not enjoy writing like most people would feel about reading a dictionary. I am cautiously treading water with every word I type. I have always found writing to be a tedious process. I have never found ease in wording something the way I want to; therefore, it usually sounds so much better in my head. I’ve never considered myself to be comfortable with writing in general. For example, I always had a hard time telling if I needed a comma in a sentence or not. Sometimes it was obvious, but it seems more confusing most of the time.
Great poetry tells a story in a manner unique and improved by the nature of poetry. For instance, Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” most definitely tells a story, but the method it is told is conveyed in a manner only possible through poetry. Usage of repetition, refrain, as well as highly detailed and connotative language convey the story, yes, but work alongside this to create the eerie and dreadful mood that is so very characteristic of Poe. All of the poetic devices are used tactfully and creatively to create a powerful sense of emotion in the reader, whether it pertains to the mood or theme. As well, excellent poetry is something that sticks with the reader long after it has been observed. The emotional state created, in excellent poetry, should remain with the reader due to how powerful it is. Likewise, excellent poetry should teach something, or change the reader’s views, whether that be of themself or the world at large. For the most part, I think I worked primarily to instill emotion in the reader through my poems, focusing on creating a theme as well as just discussing some of my thoughts on some
Anyone can tell stories, but writing them is an entirely different beast. Technically, anyone can write one too, but to write something good, something worthwhile is the real challenge. The process of putting words on paper has proven to be one of the hardest yet most gratifying pastimes I’ve ever engaged in. It’ll break you (at this point, I’m certain it’ll be my undoing). It’ll grind you down to a nervous wreck.
When I starting writing them it would feel like I was completing a puzzle because not only did the poem have to make sense, but it also had to rhyme in a certain order. After learning about all the different types of poems there were our class each created our own poetry books that captured our imaginative minds all in one special place. Learning about poetry made me appreciate reading even more because as I grew older I knew that reading would not solely consist of endless chapter books with words I could not pronounce or
My earliest memories about writing was 4th grade, it was the first year of me not being in a bilingual classroom environment. Ever since then I remember having difficulty in writing assignments. If I recall correctly, every 2 weeks we were to write an essay and 3 students would go to the front of the classroom and read their stories. At first my classmates would volunteer, however, towards the end of the year the teacher caught on that it
