Anyone can tell stories, but writing them is an entirely different beast. Technically, anyone can write one too, but to write something good, something worthwhile is the real challenge. The process of putting words on paper has proven to be one of the hardest yet most gratifying pastimes I’ve ever engaged in. It’ll break you (at this point, I’m certain it’ll be my undoing). It’ll grind you down to a nervous wreck. Make you uneasy. The more I type, the more I realize that the only thing louder than the keystrokes are the thoughts of, “Is this good enough?” It’s only natural when you grow up in an environment with consistent exposure to some of the most revered writers in history, you feel as if you’re writing under the bars raised by the likes of Hemingway, or Steinbeck and Shakespeare. At times, it’s difficult to keep on going. We’re brought up on the idea that we will achieve greatness, or that …show more content…
That’s what’s important. I write because I feel I lack purpose and so I try my best to find it hidden underneath these words. I feel as if it’s one of the only things I'm good at, even if I’m not all that good at it. It’s the same with all art. It’s all about feeling complete, feeling content with yourself. When you find that one thing that brings a smile to not only your face, but your collective soul, that’s when you know you’ve found your purpose. We all need purpose, or else what are we to do? Writing is a selfless art. It consumes you, either when you’ve already pursued it professionally or even if you’re just student like myself. There’s a dedication that needs to be put forth, something I’ve learned through my inescapable lack of it. You give yourself to the art and to the people that will eventually consume it, so without that dedication to the craft, you’ll wind up a wannabe as opposed to the real deal. It’s good to have aspirations and a drive, but you can’t dream forever. The time will come when you have to take action and make that dream a
I am more knowledgeable about invention, arrangement, style, and delivery, all in which create a masterful piece of text. A few examples, I have learned to organize and construct my thoughts and ideas clearer. I have been taught to use stronger transitions and focus more on the delivery and content of the body element of essays. Further, the instructions and advice I have received throughout this term have influenced my understanding of the purpose of writing. My outlook on writing has been modified by shifting my perception of writing from, writing to prove I am a good writer by perceiving it as using “fluffy” or BIG words to impress my audience. I grew to understanding that good writing’s purpose is to engage the writer by mind-striking ideas and arguments, which therefore will prove and title me as a “good writer”.
Stephen King’s “On Writing,” is a memoir of the author’s experiences as a writer and serves as a guidebook for those who choose to enter the craft of writing. Stephen King writes about his childhood and young adulthood, relating stories that made him the writer he has become. Stephen King then moves into the mechanics of writing, offering advice and insight into a successful career that has worked so well for him but remains distant for thousands of others.
After the checking of the seven elements of writing, a writer can proceed by finding the potential and alternatives of the work. This is the stage where Murray emphasizes the fact that writers began to “mutter and whisper” as well as edit line by line (229). By doing this they began to see their strengths as how they can make it even stronger. Yet this may seem as the concluding stage, it’s not always

I consider myself a very dedicated person, because even though I didn’t like writing, I did well at it by fighting against whatever was stopping me from liking it. As time passed I conceived that reading and writing is a combination of important tools that are essential for life, something that everyone needs to be successful. Once I realized how important reading and writing was, I started to feel a passion for writing poems, songs and stories.
We wrote an essay in class where we had to ponder the age old act of storytelling and why people do it. When I wrote my first draft for that paper, I was so confused. I had no clue why people told stories. I knew what people had said their personal reasons were, but I didn’t know how to incorporate that information with my own personal feelings about stories. It wasn’t until after the second set of peer reviews that I realized that just taking their comments, which there weren’t many of, into consideration, I needed to follow my own gut feelings about my paper; my felt sense. I felt like something was very wrong with it, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. If I were a more experienced writer, perhaps I would have kept writing, not until I had filled the required amount of pages, but until I had found the words that I was searching for.
In the reflection of his lifelong writing career, Stephen King’s On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft recounts King’s numerous rejections and subsequent growth as a writer. King narrates his experience with rejection in order to convince struggling writers to persevere through failure. He relies on consistent tone, connotative diction, and structured syntax to deliver hope to aspiring writers.
Writing doesn’t come easily to me, which must make me a glutton for punishment. It has taken me years of training, learning to structure an essay and unlearning to begin again. Only since attending HSU am I realizing how exceptional my writing has become. Over the course of two semesters, I have seen my writing expand and grow. While I still adhere to the training I received in high school, I am excited to now take these tools and develop my own unique style in the years to come.
Maybe they were told their work wasn't very good, or people made fun of teased them. Often it's emotions that hold us back from creative expression, to not be ourselves or to act like others. It's usually out of fear, bound by shame shame, self-torment emanating from a past blunder. In the end, how can we move forward if we're being held back?
I personally do not enjoy writing like most people would feel about reading a dictionary. I am cautiously treading water with every word I type. I have always found writing to be a tedious process. I have never found ease in wording something the way I want to; therefore, it usually sounds so much better in my head. I’ve never considered myself to be comfortable with writing in general. For example, I always had a hard time telling if I needed a comma in a sentence or not. Sometimes it was obvious, but it seems more confusing most of the time.
Ever since I was knee-high to a grasshopper I have known what I want to do and who I plan to be. An author is someone who manipulates words, adds their voice, and uses their imagination to create characters, worlds, and plots. An author of fiction is exactly what I want to be and who I have worked on to become. Thus, I have decided that when I am out of Union County Early College (SPCC), I would like to major in English and minor in Creative Writing. I have a lot to learn and I'm looking forward to mastering my future profession eventually (though I doubt I will ever master all there is to know about the written word).
I also began to look deeper into how my language and attitude can affect writers in their motivation and general perception of writing. For example, I became more aware of my privilege when learning about my writers’ upbringing in the education system. I quickly realized how fortunate I was to have such great English teachers in junior high and high school because they prepared me for college, unlike some of my
I want to be an author. I want my words to change someone’s life. My mind is full of stories that I want to share with the world. Before Junior year I lacked ambition and desire, but all this changed when I met my English teacher. Mrs. Drish was a humous gleeful individual whose passion for reading and writing was admirable.
What makes a writer efficient in the academic setting? A skilled writer is someone who is able to properly use academic components in the correct situation and when needed.
