Ever since I was knee-high to a grasshopper I have known what I want to do and who I plan to be. An author is someone who manipulates words, adds their voice, and uses their imagination to create characters, worlds, and plots. An author of fiction is exactly what I want to be and who I have worked on to become. Thus, I have decided that when I am out of Union County Early College (SPCC), I would like to major in English and minor in Creative Writing. I have a lot to learn and I'm looking forward to mastering my future profession eventually (though I doubt I will ever master all there is to know about the written word).
I don't know much about writing in th discipline most related to my major, but I am hypothesizing that it could fit under humanities and the arts depending on what is being written. For example, if I were to write a fictional story dealing with someone who has been bullied, or someone who has a mental disorder, or even someone who is going through racial issues, it could tie into humanities and possibly even social sciences. And there's no doubt that writing is a form of art. Not only have they looked for meaning, instructors have also looked for correct formatting on citations and the set up of the paper. But more than that, they look for a voice that is my own that will set me apart and show my understanding of the material teached. I am sure there are many other things my instructors and my classmates have expected from me, but I would not know what those things are because I am not them or much of a people-pleaser. I am in the process of writing my first novel in hopes to get it published after I graduate high school. Many students, and teachers unfortunately, have shot down my dreams of doing so but I have persevered with this aspiration of mine. I’ve found the people who think I can accomplish this are those who know for a fact I will continue with this dream.
From this course I have learned that being a writer is much more than writing grammatically correct. A writer is one who studies deeply and takes into mind the audience and the context and then begins to form their paper. Writers are rhetor’s, encoders, and members of discourse communities. As a writer, I hold the power to influence anyone that reads my writing, whether I intend to influence that person or not. Being a writer from my understanding this semester should actually be called a rhetor or encoder, because just about every piece of writing contains rhetoric and intertextuality of some sort, whether you consciously recognize it or not. I find that the knowledge, skills, and new ideas I have acquired this semester will significantly influence not only my college career but also benefit my life in general.
The very first chapter we read of Mindful Writing changed my perspective to see that anyone and everyone can be a writer. Brian Jackson, the author of Mindful Writing, wrote, “In this book I want to convince you that anyone writing anything for any reason is a writer…Writing is not something we do just in school. It is a vital means of influence in all facets of life.” It was through that very first reading that I began to think about writing as more than just a dreaded part of school, and I began to think of myself as more than just a student forced to write. Our very first assignment, My Writing Story, helped me to reflect on my identity as a writer. I realized that I was a writer every time I wrote in my journal or captioned an Instagram post. Throughout the semester, as I came to love writing more with each paper I wrote, I was able to create my identity as a writer. I learned that I loved research and analyzing others’ thoughts and ideas, but that writing simply on my own opinions, wasn’t my favorite past time. Through the countless readings this semester, I saw which writing styles I loved and which didn’t speak to me. Each day of class, I chipped away at creating my identity as a writer, and I’m grateful for the lessons that helped me shape and realize that

The journey through language and literature has always been an intriguing one for me. It is for this reason that I chose English as my major. It seems that every teacher or professor that I have had, has always been able to pinpoint one specific element in my writing that I need to work on. This has not been a negative thing by any stretch, because with each passing semester there is an element of my literature that will be perfected for the next. This is the wonder that is English, and the reason for my passion in this subject area.
Many of these debaters think that modern art can be done without any talent or effort. The debaters say that an individual could just splash some paint on a canvas and call it art, which is true. Art is art as long as it is expressing creativity, emotion, and imagination. However, many artists put a lot of time and effort into their artwork. I personally do not enjoy writing like most people would feel about reading a dictionary. I am cautiously treading water with every word I type. I have always found writing to be a tedious process. I have never found ease in wording something the way I want to; therefore, it usually sounds so much better in my head. I’ve never considered myself to be comfortable with writing in general. For example, I always had a hard time telling if I needed a comma in a sentence or not. Sometimes it was obvious, but it seems more confusing most of the time.

Art can be defined in many ways by an individual. One can say that any creative output by a person is considered art. Others contend that art must conform to a societal standard and the basis of the creation should be understood by most intellectual people. For example, some contend that computer-generated images, such as fractals, are not art due to the large role played by a computer. E.O. Wilson states “the exclusive role of the arts is to intensify aesthetic and emotional response. Works of art communicate feeling directly from mind to mind, with no intent to explain why the impact occurs” (218). A simple definition may be that art is the physical expression of the ideals formed by the mind.
When I was five years old, my grandmother taught me how to read and write. Ever since then, I have loved to do both things. If there was ever a job more suited for me, I have no idea what it would be. Authors are usually amicable people. Authors are kind to their colleagues due to their friendly and creative trade.

To me art is a form of representing a person’s ideas which can be in any form of media whether it be a painting, a film, or a song, a novel or a photograph. For it to be classed as art though it must provoke emotion or thought and show signs of creativity.
What makes a writer efficient in the academic setting? A skilled writer is someone who is able to properly use academic components in the correct situation and when needed. Without the use of these components writers are left with unpolished pieces of work and set forth on a downward spiral in their writing.
