What makes a writer efficient in the academic setting? A skilled writer is someone who is able to properly use academic components in the correct situation and when needed. Without the use of these components writers are left with unpolished pieces of work and set forth on a downward spiral in their writing. Without a clear purpose statement the writer can easily stray from the topic of the assignment and confuse the audience. Some writers find it difficult to present a clear purpose or easily get confused, to avoid this a writer should present a straight-forward statement. Recently I was asked to write an essay in two class periods, meaning that the quality of my essay wouldn’t be as high when compared to my other essays that I had a longer time to work on. Due to the amount of time given, I knew that in order to write an excellent essay I needed to establish a clear statement. In my essay I established my purpose through the sentence “ This has led me to urge the addition of “Shitty First Drafts” by Anne Lamott and “Writing for an Audience” by Linda Flower to the curriculum for Seniors.” With my statement, I present a clear idea that is straight forward without clusters of high vocabulary fillers that could. As writers in a higher advanced educational system, our assignments must not only catch the reader’s eye but give enough information as well. In this situation of academia, a clear purpose statement is only the first step in writing an efficient essay. Without the audience, there is no specific way a writer can establish structure for their essay. The purpose of the audience is easily overlooked by most writers resulting in an improper balance to their essay. In Bartholomae’s Inventing the University he states “ After taking on the sound of the specialized discourse, students must try to seem as insiders with their academic by beginning with common points…” Through his statement, Bartholomae attaches the concept of using similar language as the audience in order to to gain their attention. Through similar language it is easier for the audience to connect with the writer and have a better reception of the writing. Similar to the purpose statement, the audience must be addressed clearly and properly in the assignment. When writers fluctuate between different audiences their writing can come off as sloppy and not personal. Without the proper connection to the audience, the writer will struggle to convey their purpose effectively, which can ruin a paper. In this article written by David Bartholomae, the author discusses problems basic writers make and about how they must use the discourse (communication style) of the academic community they are writing to, to be an effective writer. Bartholomae believes that “Inventing the University," is being able to assemble and mimic the universities language(5). Which means, if a student wants to be an efficient writer, he or she must be able to speak the language of his or her audience. Bartholomae writes that a common mistake of basic writers is that they don’t use an authoritative voice, and tend to switch into a more passive voice. The point is just to let the unrestricted thoughts flow, for me most of the time it ends up being a rant that makes me look like a less than nice guy. To prove my point in the third essay for the class titled “Writing for all” the first draft was a total rant. The they say a portion of the essay had lines like “ A student would go to class, learn “... drop the E and add -ing” to make something a verb. Only to later down the line learn, doto some detail, it doesn’t always count as a verb.” making me sound pessimistic. Not something I generally would allow people to read. After a combing through the rant filled pages of that first draft I managed to salvage I created this as the better opening “A scholar may use writing as a way for us to preserve what we learned, for future generations to build off of. A book author will use writing to pull people into the book’s world of mythos and legend.” The First draft had essayed gold mired in the rant somewhere and just took rereading and picking out those lumps of gold. Which then have the opportunity to be part of the main essay after smelting or filtering it
Before an author begins composing a body of work, there are three requirements necessary to establish beforehand. The composer must first “have a specific purpose and an audience”( Braziller, Kleinfeld, 7). A purpose allows there to be an overall reason to write. The purpose is necessary to persuade, inform, educate, or entertain the reader on a certain topic. The topic can be caused by "the time period, location, current event, or cultural significance (University, 1995-2018 )”. Identifying the audience is necessary since it instructs the composer how to communicate in a way the audience will appreciate and understand. As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.
‘Helping students meet the challenges of academic writing’ by Fernsten and Reda is an interesting study how reflective writing practices can be useful for marginalized students, who are struggling with “negative writer self-identity. The possible causes according to Fernsten & Reda are, “issues such as race, class and gender that are marginalized factors for many basic writers”, in addition to the expectations of the dominant academic culture. However, even though Fernsten & Reda illuminated the ‘potential conflicts’ within the academic world, they have failed to provide conclusive evidence that supports their argument regarding their solution. Their reliance on dated research that provides a one sided historical perspective, may no longer accurately reflect current socio/economic issues. In addition, education has been evolving to an inclusive curriculum approach, as immigrated children enter the school system in record numbers. “Persons obtaining legal permanent status in the U.S from the year 2000-2010 are roughly eleven million” (Homeland Security,pg.10/2010). Fernsten & Reda’s confidence of their own limited teaching practices without legitimate comparables from an empirical study leads to their underlying assumptions about the true effectiveness of reflective writing strategies and the causes they believe are associated to a student’s socio/economic background.
There are many differences between articles written for scholars and articles written for popular audiences. According to Anne Johns, the author of “Discourse Communities and Communities of Practice,” there are ten conventions or moves that exist only in academic prose and when violated, author is seen as an outsider of the discourse community. John Swales (“Create a Research Space” (CARS) Model Research Introductions) and Ken Hyland also talk about writing and the similarities between all academic writing in “Create a Research Space” (CARS) Model Research Instructions and “Disciplinary Courses”. Based on research by Swales, Hyland, and Johns on academic writing, and research by Jeanne Fahnestock, Charles Sullivan and Cameron M. The audience of a paper effects the entire tone and feel of it. When I first wrote the rhetorical analysis essay I considered my audience as the professor. I assumed this because she would be the one reading the essay. My assumption caused me to omit details and kept my writing too formal. By revising my audience, it allows for a larger scope of focus for the essay. Once I figured out that my audience was my peers the essay flowed much better. Anyone who has looked over their writing multiple times and has found ways to enhance and professionalize it will learn to write in a more clear and concise manner than they had done before. The Expository Writing Stations has helped change the students’ understanding of how to write a proper essay by having the the students edit and review one another’s essays, finding some things that they should have put on their own essay to help enhance the writing.
