Brenda Ueland, known for her book "If You Want to Write," in this book she shares her thoughts as an advocate for freedom, living in the moment and self expression. The central tenets being that everyone has talent, has something important to say and everyone is original; because each person is unique. Thus if words come from the source then the writing will be just fine.
Ueland asserts that writing is a natural process and a pleasant experience. Creativity is expression, which is something that's instinctual and automatic. Hence, people are naturally creative. Writing should come from inside, not through external pressure. Dive into the soul, look and write about when you sense, thoughts and feelings. Speak from the heart. Freedom is important for creativity, you must be free to express your inner self, not what others would like of you. Creativity doesn't' come from rules, don't force them on others, don't follow them.
Ueland reports that we undergo a holocaust of talent, youth everyday get their creative energy destroyed. Writing is an emotional battle, sometimes the worst enemy is that of a friend, maybe a grammar wiz telling you that you're breaking a rule, telling us that we are wrong. They do something creative, they show it to someone they love, hoping they'll approve, of course they'll approve, they worked so hard on it. They get rejected and feel broken. They'll feel like they don't have what it takes. If I can't master proper useage how can I write good prose? For most they won't attempt this again, why would they?

Maybe they were told their work wasn't very good, or people made fun of teased them. Often it's emotions that hold us back from creative expression, to not be ourselves or to act like others. It's usually out of fear, bound by shame shame, self-torment emanating from a past blunder. In the end, how can we move forward if we're being held back?
Writers do little and expect a lot, Ueland observes, we demand perfection, and compare our work to that of the greats, if it's not on par we're a failure. But this isn't the case, writing is just like any other craft, it takes practice. Speaking of how to improve Ueland encourages the process of thinking of how best to put yourself on paper, not of comparing yourself to others. Urges, you to no practice writing passively, do so with due thought and large emotional investments. Writing is often not practiced like it should be, train like a musician always honing.

Both Frahm and Lamott stress the importance to not worry about anyone but yourself when you are writing. The writer is always justified in following their own writing path because it is their work of art. The reader, of course, needs to be considered while writing through proper organization of ideas and flow in the writing piece, but the thoughts and ideas of the writer should be taken in consideration first. Lamott explains that it you need to silence the inner critic, “put the lid on, and watch all these mouse people clawing at the glass, jabbering away, trying to make you feel crummy” (Lamott 264). Simply ignore everyone else’s opinions, stick true to yourself, and focus on you and your draft to get the best possible outcome.
What about writing and the writing process makes it so disliked and, in some cases, even feared? “Fun?” by Lex Runciman, an English teacher at the Linfield College in Oregon, is an insightful article that explores why many people don’t enjoy writing. He is a very credible author because he has taught college English classes for many years and has written and published several books. His main claim throughout the article is that many people dislike writing and feel that it is frustrating because it is not perceived as or made out to be fun, enjoyable, or rewarding. Runciman wrote this article because, at the time, he felt that there was not enough being done to reverse the negative image that surrounds writing. He wants his readers to realize through his article that writing and the writing process can actually be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Runciman uses evidence, assumptions, and language and tone as a basis for his argument.
Several people have trouble writing college level essays and believe that they are unable to improve their writing skills. In “the Inspired Writer vs. The Real Writer,” Sarah Allen argues how no one is born naturally good at writing. Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. Literature has long been an important part of human life. We express our feelings with ink and paper; we spill out our souls on dried wood pulp. Writing has been form of release and enjoyment since the beginning of written language. You can tell a story, make yourself a hero. You can live out all your fantasies. For the most part, critics are known to praise a writer’s work with small gain or negatively judge someone’s art with large consequences. With the judgment of other being a key aspect of how people define themselves, what does an artist do when facing this problem. Rike’s answer it quite elegantly as the “works of art are of an infinite solitude, and no means of approach is so useless as criticism” (11). Why ignore the critism of the other? Rike explain that the writer’s true feeling about their work is what can be trusted. Passed the arguments and discussions presented by others, the work of art is a reflection of the artist. With this reasoning, the opinion of the writer should be the only governing factor of the art. I believe this idea of thinking about making your own artwork is important to any artists. From personal experience, I know that this ideology would have greatly benefit my skills as an artist. When growing up, surrounded by many talented people, it’s hard for any aspiring artists to develop their ability. What exactly is creativity? To be creative is to understand and connect the small details of our experiences, both good and bad (creative something). Creativity involves a person using his or her original ideas to create something. Artists such as poets, writers, painters, designers, and more use creativity on a regular basis. They use creativity to come up with new ideas and create original works of art. A poet would use his or her creative abilities to write and produce a poem just like a painter would use creativity to paint a painting.
Hearing hurtful comments about my writing style and subject after I had finally gotten up the courage to push through my perfectionistic tendencies in the writing process was devastating. Letting my guard down enough to actually follow through with my plans on songwriting collaboration sounds like a daunting task, but I think I am on the right track now to achieve my new goal. In an effort to avoid censure, artists would censor their own works prematurely. While some consider the term “self-censorship” an attack on the individual artists who may have changed their style or content, others, like writer María Elena Walsh, illustrated the self-censorship as crisis in the way it impacted the individual artist. “We each have a broken pencil and an enormous eraser already encrusted in our brains.” (Walsh, ) Her fear was for the artists who had implicitly censored themselves, believing once they had learned to edit themselves out of fear, they would be unable to write freely after the regime had fallen.
The definition of creativity can be defined as any process using imaginative or original ideas to problem solve. However Ken Robinson gives a definition of creativity that suggests “being creative involves doing something. People are not creative in the abstract; they are creative in something [music, sports, engineering business] in whatever, you cannot be creative unless you are actually doing something” (Robison 2011) Robison believes that only when we put imaginative ideas into action are we being creative.
Creativity is the mental characteristic that allows a person to think outside of the box, which results in innovative or different approaches to a particular task. It requires passion and commitment. It brings to our awareness what was previously hidden and points to new life. It does not arise in a vacuum; it requires a certain degree of both general knowledge and field-specific knowledge. In this something new and value able is created such as an idea, a design, a literary work, a painting or musical composition, a solution, an invention etc.
