Why I Chose This Topic/The Story of My Search One of the reasons I chose to research tattoos was because it was a topic that I would have never considered writing about in an academic setting. My main reason to write a paper on this topic was that I have been wanting to get a tattoo for years. I come from a very liberal background and view tattoos as a form of expression. There are two reasons why I have not gotten a tattoo yet: commitment and the stigma behind tattoos in the workplace. I am a very indecisive person and my biggest fear of having a tattoo is not being satisfied with it over time. My dream job is to become a foreign service officer/diplomat one day but because the job is prestigious and affiliated with the government, having a tattoo would not seem professional to most people. I had prior knowledge of tattoos coming before researching this topic. I have been exposed to tattoos for many years. I have several friends and family members that have tattoos. Examine movies and TV shows/series; in many cases, the antagonist or “bad person” has tattoos. After years of pairing these things together, the brain automatically links tattoos with a negative connotation. Psychology teaches us that we should not always trust our perceptions. Because of this conditioning, many people view individuals with tattoos as rebellious or non-conforming. When it comes to tattoos in the workplace, many companies are opposed having visible tattoos (or in some cases, having tattoos overall) since it could affect their image/reputation (Jones). Although it may not always be the case, when applying for a job, applicants with tattoos are more likely to be rejected mainly because of their body modification
