Dressing appropriately for ones line of work is important in any industry. Most work environments require a dress code that creates uniformity and conforms to safety laws. However, the question of what is business appropriate attire is being revisited. In the past, tattoos had been considered extremely taboo in the work place. However, a poll from NBC News showed that nearly 1 of 5 adults had a tattoo in 2012 (McMullen). In an article titled, “Does Dress Code In The Workplace Mater?” by Jacob Morgan, the question is raised of why most companies require their employees to show up to work in a conservative suit and tie if they do all their work behind a computer monitor (Morgan). How we dress and how our peers dress is important, not only for ourselves but for the work environment as a whole (Morgan). When people dress more comfortably, such as in T-shirts and jeans, they are more inclined to be seen as more outgoing and relaxed. When determining how the dress code should be, the company must take into consideration how workers will appreciate their required attire. The only unethical reasoning for dress codes may be is if it impedes the right to a person’s religious garb. However, some exceptions may be made in terms of safety or if sanitation is an issue. A happy worker is considered to be a productive worker; therefore dress codes may need to be tailored to the tastes of the workers. However, having rules for appropriate dress codes may induce a feeling of connectivity for employees as well a sense of uniformity for clients. On the other hand, having a less stringent dress code may increase happiness and also productivity in workers. Therefore, a dress code should be enforced where it is warranted and more relaxed when it is not

The phenomenon of casual dress in the business place has come full circle. Many companies are now moving away from casual dress. Many business leaders have come to realize that the nonverbal signals sent by casual dress, conflict with the image the company is attempting to portray. A trend that was seeing more and more companies opting for casual dress, now has companies considering a complete withdraw from this popular business fashion. Companies will need to completely overhaul their dress codes if casual dress is to survive.
The author continues to explain the two points he learned, and because of those points, he made his school a casual place.
